We can't all be No. 1
Near the end of the game something unusual happened that some of you may have noticed. Once in a while, usually when a game gets out of hand and the benches get emptied, teams get called for having guys on the field with the same jersey number.
Michigan got a penalty on a punt return late in the game when Andrel Anthony (#1) fielded the punt, and on the ensuing return, received a block from freshman Ja'Den McBurrows (also #1). The 5 yard illegal procedure penalty for having the same-numbered players in the game at the same time gave NIU a first down. The NIU drive continued and the next play was Lombardi's 45 yard keep, followed soon after by NIU's lone touchdown.
Two #1's on the field at the same time. Can't say as I've ever heard of that anywhere.

Forecast for today called for rain, not snow.

That's true... and was pointed out on the broadcast.

Hard to imagine the coaches didn't know the rule, rather they flaunted it. But why not have a Velcro zero or sticky for just those plays, say, on one of the 1 players making it 01 ? PROBLEM SOLVED.

Why would you make it 01 instead of 10? 1 and 01 are the same...

No, you can't.

When you play over 100 players, this was bound to happen.
September 20th, 2021 at 4:44 PM ^
This happened before under Hole or RichRod. I can't remember which.
September 20th, 2021 at 4:49 PM ^
You are correct. I am pretty sure it was Martevious Odoms. Two Number 9’s that time.
September 20th, 2021 at 5:38 PM ^
Definitely Hole.
September 20th, 2021 at 5:56 PM ^
Yup--that was Bracy Hole alright.

I don’t want Courtney Love anywhere near this program.
September 20th, 2021 at 4:53 PM ^
Yeah. This was talked about on the broadcast
And in the Snowflake thread. A bunch.
Not really the biggest deal when you are trotting out 2nd/3rd string guys on special teams, it could happen.
Memphis literally had the same thing happen but with 2 #4's, except theirs was in a close game on the game -winning punt return

Didn't Auburn just have 2 #5's on the field against Penn St. but the refs didn't catch it?
September 20th, 2021 at 5:01 PM ^
Did Andre Seldon play? I didn't see him in there.
September 20th, 2021 at 5:05 PM ^
I saw it happen once, but it wasn’t with Michigan. Come to think of it, it might have been a pro game many years ago
September 20th, 2021 at 8:29 PM ^
Doubtful this would happen in the NFL, the players don't share numbers.
September 20th, 2021 at 5:09 PM ^
You can be #2 though, right, OP?

Remember the season ND went to the NCG and got spanked by Alabama? The Manti Teo year? The year that everything seemed to fall into their lap despite everyone knowing they weren't all that good (solid but not NC caliber)?
Go back to the Pitt game where they needed Pitt to miss something like 900 FGs from inside of the 10yl to pull the win.
On the last Pitt missed FG in OT, ND has two players wearing the same number and two refs looking right at them from about 10ft away. No call.
This week alone has 2 other teams do this same thing to no call.
I'm not saying UM is being discriminated against because it is against the rules! I'm just saying that it happens somewhat commonly and goes uncalled about half the time.

Seth and Brian, talking about 1 + 1 on the podcast, suggested it’s an infraction that could easily be overlooked at the end of a game when the winning team is clearly emptying the bench.

Time to change the rules so that 3 digits can be used... but considering how long it took to allow "0" to be used, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I just thought Anthony was super fast!

What’s interesting is that every touchdown our defense has given up this year were all allowed by a preceding penalty. If those penalties don’t happen (all were stupid and preventable) then our defense would have no tds allowed which is nuts.

This is nothing. I once saw a baseball game where there were 9 players named Bugs Bunny!
September 20th, 2021 at 7:21 PM ^
Sounds like a Bill Brasky story.

I once saw a baseball game where every player wore #42. It got confusing.
September 20th, 2021 at 7:27 PM ^
That mistake cost us the game!
September 20th, 2021 at 9:24 PM ^
Went uncalled in the game against Western. Two #14's on a kick return.
September 20th, 2021 at 9:53 PM ^
I disagree with the premise of this thread

This is the stupidest rule for a punt return anyway, on top of what was brought up about overlooking it late in a game.
I see where it makes sense for an offensive set, identifying a player and such, but there was one number one deep to receive the punt. The other number one is blocking. Who gives a crap!!

No one gets 10 out of 10. You're lucky if it's 9.
