We can't all be No. 1

Near the end of the game something unusual happened that some of you may have noticed. Once in a while, usually when a game gets out of hand and the benches get emptied, teams get called for having guys on the field with the same jersey number.

Michigan got a penalty on a punt return late in the game when Andrel Anthony (#1) fielded the punt, and on the ensuing return, received a block from freshman Ja'Den McBurrows (also #1). The 5 yard illegal procedure penalty for having the same-numbered players in the game at the same time gave NIU a first down. The NIU drive continued and the next play was Lombardi's 45 yard keep, followed soon after by NIU's lone touchdown.

Two #1's on the field at the same time. Can't say as I've ever heard of that anywhere.

Hard to imagine the coaches didn't know the rule, rather they flaunted it.  But why not have a Velcro zero or sticky for just those plays, say, on one of the 1 players making it 01 ?  PROBLEM SOLVED.

Yeah. This was talked about on the broadcast

And in the Snowflake thread. A bunch.

Not really the biggest deal when you are trotting out 2nd/3rd string guys on special teams, it could happen.

Memphis literally had the same thing happen but with 2 #4's, except theirs was in a close game on the game -winning punt return

Remember the season ND went to the NCG and got spanked by Alabama? The Manti Teo year? The year that everything seemed to fall into their lap despite everyone knowing they weren't all that good (solid but not NC caliber)?

Go back to the Pitt game where they needed Pitt to miss something like 900 FGs from inside of the 10yl to pull the win.

On the last Pitt missed FG in OT, ND has two players wearing the same number and two refs looking right at them from about 10ft away. No call.

This week alone has 2 other teams do this same thing to no call.

I'm not saying UM is being discriminated against because it is against the rules! I'm just saying that it happens somewhat commonly and goes uncalled about half the time.

Time to change the rules so that 3 digits can be used... but considering how long it took to allow "0" to be used, I wouldn't hold my breath.

What’s interesting is that every touchdown our defense has given up this year were all allowed by a preceding penalty. If those penalties don’t happen (all were stupid and preventable) then our defense would have no tds allowed which is nuts.

This is the stupidest rule for a punt return anyway, on top of what was brought up about overlooking it late in a game.

I see where it makes sense for an offensive set, identifying a player and such, but there was one number one deep to receive the punt.  The other number one is blocking.  Who gives a crap!!
