WBB: Michigan beats MSU on the road 65-57 for the season sweep

Big win that just wrapped up on BTN. Naz Hillmon had a monster game (26 Points, 13 Rebounds) to help Michigan solidify their spot in the tournament field.

Huge win. Looks like Michigan is currently a 10 seed on ESPN bracketology. Would be nice if at some point Michigan could move up to a 6 seed or higher. It is almost impossible for them to make the Sweet 16 if they are always playing a 1 or 2 seed in the round of 32.

Next season's Women's team is going to be really really good imo. Big Ten is a quality conference with a number of ranked team (Maryland, Iowa, Indiana, Northwestern)

This year's roster:

Brown - junior

Dilk - sophomore

Hillmon - sophomore

Nolan - freshman

Johnson - senior

Kiser - sophomore

Varejao - freshman

Sidor - freshman

From this 8 person rotation, we will lose only 1 player (Johnson) to graduation. The team is set up to do very well for the next 2 seasons.

The next step for Barnes Arico is to win the conference championship and/or reach the Sweet 16.

Arico is 49. If she can do for Michigan what Beilein did for Michigan, then she'll be a legend here.

FYI: Her 2020 class is ranked 12th in the country.

Tangent: Where the heck did this 2020 Northwestern team come from? Wildcats are currently 24-3, 13-2 (1st) in conference, ranked #18 nationally. 2019 Northwestern missed the WNCAAT and lost in the WNIT semifinals.

agree 100%.  the one thing we haven't seen enough this year is great outside shooting...hailey brown has been great, but we've needed a second shooter to open things up inside for naz and varejao.  i think sidor and maddie nolan could both fill that bill, but the game is just a little too fast for them right now.  they've looked out of control, kinda like amy dilk sometimes did until about 2/3 through last season.  we're going to have a TON of weapons next year, and the incoming class is right there with the hillmon / dilk / kisor class of 2018.  look out.

after 8(!) seasons in with KBA it should be pretty obvious she is not going to come close to Beilein; middling 6th place in the B1G and early NCAA exits continue to be the best we can expect I guess.  So ... Keep Arico Forever!

the team continues to have more talent than their opponents, that is clearly not the problem. that "next step" will not happen with KBA unfortunately.

Second half was a very rough watch. But we pulled it out in the end. One game at a time.

enjoy every moment of Naz. Only a sophomore but I know the next two years will fly by. Best Michigan player by the time she’s done

An Oregon junior just declared that she would be leaving for the WNBA after the season. It happens, but only a couple a year.

I don’t think Naz is a risk to leave early unless she added a three point shot to her game. She’s an interior player that is not as big as most other post players. But she’s physical and smart, making her just fine as a solely inside the arc player in college.

Megan Gustafson was the National player of the year for Iowa last year. Record setting scorer. She’s struggling to hang on in the WNBA. Naz is great for college but I just don’t think she’s a threat for the league unless something drastic changes

i love naz, for all the reasons you say but also (maybe mostly) because of her motor.  she just never takes off a possession on either end.

as to wnba prospects, who knows?  so much of that is timing and luck.  how many players have we seen that looked like obvious nba players but couldn't quite break through?  meanwhile, duncan robinson (who i love, don't get me wrong) is lighting it up.  i dunno man.

but i realized who she reminds me of - corliss williamson.  tough as nails, smart, always hustling, a little undersized for the next level...but corliss carved out a really nice nba career as a 6th man / sometime starter that did the grit work to help win games.  those players always have value.

in any case - we're probably going to get 2 more years to see if she becomes the best player in program history.  she's on track for it.

Re: her WNBA chances, I'm mostly referring to her being an early entry candidate. I can't say whether she's a potential WNBA player or not long term because I just don't follow that league well enough to be able to say. There's only 12 teams, so I imagine it's really hard to make a roster spot and keep it.

I was at the game right behind the Michigan bench.  I couldn’t determine the validity of many of the fouls called in the 3rd quarter.  Someone said the game announcers were even questioning some of the calls.  If you watched it on BTN what did you see.  It was hard to watch in person.  We won the game in spite of the questionable calls.

i was there too - up 7-8 rows behind the bench...the officiating was really inconsistent, as if the three refs were all calling different games.

the guy ref would disappear, then make weird calls that he'd been ignoring all game long, and the short-haired woman kept jumping in to make calls from 30 feet away.  it was a really chippy, physical game on both ends, and the refs didn't help.
