Vintage Ufer broadcast of '64 UM-OSU game on WTKA right now

Submitted by Don on

For those within listening distance of WTKA, they're playing right now the 1964 Michigan-Ohio State game called by Bob Ufer. It's a more subdued, less over-the-top Bob Ufer than the version most of us are used to from the Schembechler era. The game was in Columbus, and we beat the Bucks 10-0.

The 1964 squad was by far Bump Elliott's best team, and was within an extra point against Bob Griese-led Purdue of finishing undefeated and very possibly #1 in the country. After the OSU game, we pounded the snot out of Oregon St. in the Rose Bowl, 34-7.

I'm watching college gameday and it isn't fun anymore. I'm turning the channel. We are sooo far removed from being involved in any college football conversation. I honestly believe we are in a worse spot than when richrod left. The program has truly cratered. If we don't get harbaugh I think michigan drifts into the bump Elliot age of empty stadiums and no one cares. This is unbelievable.

Cosigned.  And I honestly don't think you're overstating the situation in the least.  If they make a second-tier hire like Hoke was or, God forbid,  convince themselves to keep Hoke another year we are facing the very real prospect of becoming exactly what you described.  And even though we're on a bye week I don't think it's a coincidence that nobody has started a College Gameday open thread yet - sadly nobody cares.

How ironic that the guy who said he'd walk to Michigan for his dream job could end up destroying the very thing he loved so much.

Hoke isn't the coach who didn't recruit sufficient O-Line players, which shortage Michigan has been suffering from this year and last.

At another university, Hoke would have had the option of recuiting JuCo transfers to fill the gap.  But that's not a viable option at Michigan, so he had to recruit freshman and wait for them to mature (4 or 5 years.)  Next year the O-Line will finally have 4 upperclassmen starting, the most since 2012.

And to forestall the "the O-Line hasn't developed,"yes, it has.   There is a noticable improvement from last year to this, and from the beginning of the season to now. It does take SOME time to develop O-Line men, and 2 of the O-Line men are in only their 3rd year with the team, and 1 is in his first!

They could only do this if we beat OSU. If we managed to do that, IMHO it would be the biggest upset in the UM-OSU series history, if you measure upsets by the disparity between the two teams.

Meyer knows that OSU will need style points to get into the playoff, and a 35-3 game probably isn't going to move the needle very much, at least not against this year's UM team. He's going to look to hang at least 50 on us, and isn't going to take his foot off the pedal until they do.

Right now, Massey Ratings projects our estimated odds of winning in Columbus at all of 8% right now, and I don't think they've ever been that low in recent memory (perhaps 2008, but that's it). Sometimes, people will talk about how you can throw everything you know out the window in rivalry games like this, but this year, it feels like a Michigan win would be a complete and utter stunner because it simply wouldn't be reasonably anticipated on paper.

Appearing on Michigan Insider has also been great to listen to.

The 1964 game does come across with a different tone than what he became more famous for....I am still so impressed with his ability to paint pictures of the action with words.

My dad used to call them Ohio too... Bo and Woody both did as well.

I never thought that Hoke was trying to "thumb" OSU by referring to them as Ohio.

The media, and some stupid Ohio fans kept trying to spin it like he was flipping them off...but in reality, Hoke is just using the references that he grew up with.

If anything, calling them Ohio is a sign of respect.  There is no other worthy school or opponent in Ohio.
