Update on the state of Ohio NIL - It will pass, just not on July 1st
First off, this is good for Michigan, as it buys some time to get their NIL in order. (or more likely, the federal government to step in and make a determination that you can do whatever you want)
That said, politics are just a huge cesspool. The article linked above goes into detail, but the tl;dr version is:
- The high majority of the state of Ohio supports Ohio State football
- Lawmakers in the state of Ohio have bipartisan and unanimous support for NIL
- Rep. Jena Powell, a Republican from Darke County, attached an amendment to the the NIL ruling that would ban transgender athletes from competing in high school sports
- Per the article, Powell did this knowing that some of her opposition will now vote against the NIL bill. She can then use their vote of 'no' against these individuals as evidence that they 'hate Ohio State football and the poor college kids that are just trying to receive some free pizzas for participation in a commercial"
This is such political horseshit that you can ram an unrelated issue into NIL. Honestly, surprised it stopped there. She should have also added a line about guns, gay marriage, climate change, abortion, min wage, etc. into the NIL.
This may be the most accurate sentence ever written: That said, politics are just a huge cesspool.
My guess on what day it'll go into effect:
Didn't the NCAA say that schools can basically make up their own rules if there is no state law? Seems like the advantage now would be to delay the state law, unless that law pushes the boundaries of what the NCAA's guidelines will be.
The price is wrong?
Carol Faller, c’mon down!
I don't think it's gonna matter. According to the NCAA the conference is gonna have to have rules that all the schools agree on and adhere to, even if the state hasn't enacted any rules or regulations.
Woof the second half of this post.
truly. give me a GD break.
I guess he's new as to how the legislation process works at all levels of government?
Assuming you’re talking about me, you find it acceptable that a bill is created for one purpose (NIL) and yet legislators add in other unrelated policies?
Also, I have no idea how you can take my post as “bait” as I didn’t reference my opinions on any of the topics I posted. I was just painting the picture that this representative added a policy into this bill that had nothing to do with the bill itself. Regardless of her stance on the issue or anyone else’s, I just found it asinine that you can add in the unrelated policy.

is "adding in the unrelated policy" in any way similar to adding in an unrelated reference to "guns, gay marriage, climate change, abortion, min wage, etc.," as you did in the original post? because it seems like, you know, the same goddamned thing, and, you know, "bait."
Will this affect OSU's projected salary cap for the coming year?
If it does they'll change up the accruals and treat the deposits as "unearned"
The O$U b-school is working on it for an accounting project.
I wish that I could say that this was surprising for state-level Ohio politics.
Fun (?) fact: my grandfather once helped launch a campaign for state rep by a young up-and-comer named John Boehner. This was despite the fact that my grandfather neither smoked nor cried.
Fun(?) Fact: My wife is an immigrant. When we started the immigration process, I contacted Boehner office as we would be moving to his voting area. I had no expectations, but I thought if nothings comes of it, all I lost would be the time it takes to write an email.
Within a week, I was told his office would keep an eye out on the process for me. While it did take several months to legally move here, every time we were ready to take the next step of the process, I received an email informing me of I would be getting approval and detailing the next step of the process. When we received the official letter, we were already prepared for the next step. His office saved us countless time and effort in a confusing situation, I and will always be appreciative of his help. I am not saying I always agreed with his politics, but he or someone in his office was extreamly helpful.
That's good to hear! Without getting too far into it, I have mixed feelings about what I described.
Notwithstanding that I live in Ann Arbor and have done so for some time, I'm not sure why you are shooting barbs at Ohio's politics. At least they can fix their roads.
I didn't mean that as a comprehensive condemnation of Ohio politics. I have noticed that, in crossing the Ohio-Michigan border, the roads go from fine to Mad Max quality.
Jena Powell is an idiot that attended Liberty University. Her plan backfired, as most OSU fans I know are blaming her for this obvious political ploy that is making NIL more difficult for OSU.
Nothing to see here - the Gov stepped in.
Per Cols. Dispatch:
COLUMBUS – After Ohio lawmakers torpedoed a bipartisan effort to allow student-athletes to profit off their name, image and likeness, Gov. Mike DeWine will sign an executive order to make it happen on July 5th.
