Update: Rain pushes NCAA Champ Brienne Minor's US Open Match to Today [w/NYT article link]

Submitted by Michigasling on

Rain in Queens delayed most of yesterday's matches, so Michigan's Brienne MINOR will play her opening match today.  For those who want to follow, her match is scheduled in the 11:00* slot on Court 10, she's following 1 1/3 men's single's matches (one was postponed after the second set yesterday).

It probably won't be a streamed match,* but it's getting a lot of interest, even for non-Wolverines.  Brienne is the first African-American woman to win the NCAA Division 1 singles championship, and her opponent, Tunisian Ons Jabeur, is the first Arab woman ever to make it to a third round singles match in a major, this year's French open.

Great NY Times article about Brienne (with internal link to article about Jabeur):

*EDIT: The US Open website streaming link is now live and links to matches currently on ESPN3, so there's hope.  See posts below for Brienne match time estimates.

TERRIBLY HUMILIATING EDIT #2:  How did I invent a different last name?  I've got to start getting some sleep and not sneak in stuff like this at work.  I mean, her last name is even in the Times LINK!  Jeez.

I believe that WatchESPN streams all 16 courts for the US Open, so once her match starts it should be available.

She probably won't play before 2 pm EDT--the first men's match (Mayer v Gasquet) starts at 11, and they are tied 1 set a piece, so figure at least an hour to finish that and possibly as much as 2 hours.  Then there's another men's match (Baghdatis v Fritz) which will take at least an hour and a half and potentially as much as 3 hours.  With breaks between matches added on, I would figure a start time 2 pm at the earliest and 4:30 at the latest.

Looks like she's scheduled to play at 330pm EST. ESPN's coverage of the Open begins at 1pm so hopefully they'll show some of her match, or at least a quick live look-in. Go Blue.

Tiafoe v Federer last night. The kid had a golden opportunity to take out Fed, but the moment got too big when he got the break back in the 5th.

Still, he's got a ton of talent, and has an massive amount of upside, compared to our supposed next star Jack Sock who really doesn't seem to give an F.

The postponed match from yesterday just finished, so the Baghdatis v Fritz (Men's Singles, best-of-5) match will start at about 1:00 and Minor's match will follow that.

Facing my utter humiliation and fixed the OP.  I even watched the live stream of her winning the NCAA championship!  No excuse but brain cell disintegration. (Even the joke flew by me as I recognized my egregious error.)

Taylor Fritz makes short work of Baghdatis.  Brienne Minor is up next on Court #10, she will start at 3:15 EDT.  Winner plays tomorrow afternoon.

(EDIT:  Sorry--that was a quicker warmup than I thought they were going to have).  Minor holds serve to win game 1.

Evan King made it through the qualifier last week to make his first Grand Slam tournament in singles (he made the US Open in mixed doubles last year), losing in the First Round on Monday to 20th ranked Pablo Carreno Busta.  He is playing the best tennis of his career this summer and I hope to see more of him in ATP tournaments.

Here's an article about Evan from a couple days ago after making it through qualifying. It's from the Freep, but it has nothing to do with defaming our football team and very positive about Evan. [I'd paste in chosen quotes for the Freep-averse, but can't copy anything in on my work computer.  At least I learned I can hand-type the URL and it turns into a link. As long as I didn't mistype it as Evan Prince.]

She at least showed that she belonged on the same court as #99 in the world in the second set.  11 double faults on 60 service points isn't going to win the match, and I will be charitable and chalk some of that up to a case of nerves at the beginning of the match.

Double-faulting away the last 2 points of game 3 of the match pretty much set the tone for the first set.  Disappointing to go up 2 breaks in the second set only to turn around and give them right back, but I'm used to watching men's tennis and I realize that being "on serve" isn't the same level of importance in women's tennis.  Still, you have to get more first serves in if you want to win.

Hopefully she makes it back to a grand slam sooner rather than later.  She can earn that wild card again next year with another NCAA championship.

The Times article gives hints at how overwhelmed she might be at the whole experience, that simply thrilled to be there kind of thing, then the delays giving her too much time to think.  But it has to be a positive to her to come back from that first set and make a genuine game of it against someone who's been on the pro circuit, and made living at it, for several years.

I was at the matches yesterday, and was excited to see that she was scheduled for Tuesday when the draw went up. I saw enough Michigan gear on enough other spectators that I think she would have had good fan support.
