UM Football Conditioning Video

Submitted by VintageRandy on June 8th, 2022 at 8:49 AM

Short video from the UM football account showing the beginning of conditioning practices. Nothing especially noteworthy, but a few things:

  • Mazi Smith looks huge
  • They sometimes highlight players in these videos, so it’s nice to note some new faces in Kechaun Bennett, Tyler McLaurin, and Darrius Clemons
  • Braiden McGregor does a strong guy thing - make of that what you will if you’re hoping for Aidan 2.0

It’s OT season so we’ll take the dregs of content.

Man - I love this team. Perfect balance of talent, hard work and dedication.

And I am very proud of how they represent the University, I haven't seen an interview with a Michigan athlete in years where I cringed or thought badly on the person.

Agree. We can slice and dice Harbaugh's tenure until the cows come home (why are they out so late? they couldn't call?), but the character of our guys has consistently been off the charts. This is in how they've attacked the challenge of being big time student athletes, and how they conduct themselves.

Even if our team wasn't historically great, and even if they didn't have the best unforms/fight song/stadium in the sport, it would still be an easy bunch to root for.

Whoever did the audio mix put the iphone timer noise at about :20 in. I was almost triggered to get on a conference call.

Also, when that 88 started filling in toward the end, I thought this was a "Tim Massaquoi ISSSS BACKKKK!!" hype video.

If the team isn't running in a sandpit throwing up every 5 min with Barwis yelling like a crazed drill sergeant is it really conditioning?

They're real time physio-monitors. You see them a lot in training, college soccer, aerobic sports. The first time I saw one, I thought "oh sweet, that boy is a Brandi Chastain fan!"

But basically it's next level, real time monitoring of players physio levels and biometric feedback, from heartrate, to O2, and so on. In the world of college soccer where you can make multiple subs, you'll see programs that have a coach sitting on the bench and a laptop. That coachs' sole responsibility is to monitor "peak" levels of performance. And then the team will sub based on the biometric feedback they're given.  Jimmy is outside of his peak performance range, sub him out for Joe.

As it's been explained to me, football would use these monitors likely in a different way than a soccer program would. They'd be looking for different levels and likely monitoring some different things. But the same basics apply.
