UM Athletic Department 2nd Most Profitable in US in '08
Not that this couldn't have been done by everyone else, but I figure this might be of some use to the board. I took that database mentioned in UV today as found here:
http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2010/01/19/subsidy
And google doc'd it so I could give it out and do some easy sorting. If you want to check it out yourself, here's the link:

In case you were wondering, here's the top 25:
And here's the bottom 25:
Should we maybe look skeptically on the idea of adding Rutgers to the Big 10? Maybe? And that was 6 of 11 programs in the big 10 in the top 25 (aka "profitable") in 2008, with 0 in the bottom 25.

Holy Toledo! We destroyed Ohio State!
Wow the directional Michigan schools take a beating on athletics, they are all awful.
Edit: I notice that Texas is doing decently as well, showing a match here with the Big Ten Schools, another reason in the endless who is next expansion team debate.
I am kind of surprised Tennessee is in the bottom 25. I would expect more with the success of women's bball and men's bball and not to mention the football program.
Geez we haven't even reaped the benefits of income from luxury box and club seating sales. We may vault to the top by the time the 2010 figures come out.
How sure are we on these numbers? I can't believe that Purdue and Indiana are higher on the profit list than OSU and that Penn State is nowehere to be found.
Begs the question, what are schools lke OSU and PSU blowing all their profit dollars on? Hmmmmm.
OSU has a ton of them.
http://begthequestion.info/
Not really a grammar nazi...just interesting how many people use "begs the question" as synonym to "raises the question".
I still say it the wrong way FWIW...
Carry on.
For whatever reason, Penn State wasn't on in the database Brian linked to. I looked for them, and couldn't find them. I didn't look for very long, but the list was in alphabetical order, so I didn't feel the need to.
The Bleed Scarlet article Brian linked to sez:
Pennsylvania law also allows PSU, Pitt, and Temple to not comply, and Navy did not either.
The MAC schools are at the bottom of the list because they field 23 sports. 2nd only to the B10 which fields 25.
Side note: Tennessee lost $12MM? With that fanbase? That football stadium? huh.
EMU has 19 varsity sports teams, CMU has 14, and WMU has 15.
Not all Big Ten schools have the same number of teams, either. Indiana, for example, has 22, while OSU has 36 (!).
logic error. I stole it from this.
