U-M's Radio Coverage Still up in the Air

And not Airwaves, unfortunately.

You can rank different things Bill Martin did here differently, but how such a knowledgable businessman got caught with his pants down on the whole WJR thing is still embarrassing, and has to rank near the bottom of his ledger.  (With the Stadium near the top, to throw him a bone).

I should have known something was up when my earbud radio was sent back because they couldn't reprogram it as the University hadn't renewed the contract. Kinda hard to do when yu don't even know who's going to carry your games.

I live in North Oakland County and I don't get TKA in my car until I get to around Southfield which totally sucks.

I know I can listen to podcasts but is there another way to get TKA/Michigan Coverage in that live during my commute to work?  Do they stream live or broadcast on FM? Any other options?

I always listen to the games on Sirius and it is one of the reasons I got satellite radio to begin with so I can listen in car or put it on my computer and turn off the usual b.s. from television announcers and listen to Beckmann and Brandstatter.  For basically $12 a month, hard to beat......Always has football and basketball games, and many of our hockey games too....

If someone could enlighten me, just why did WJR not continue to do the games. I was massively honked off, when I learned they were not going to be doing them. I could still get the radio broadcasts here in Fort Wayne when they were on WJR, now not so much.

You'll recall that WJR did not have, and never had, anything but football with M. M basketball has always been on WWJ instead. When the opportunity to pick up Sparty basketball AND football came up, WJR jumped at it, reasoning that 40-odd dates would be more profitable than 12 or 13 M football broadcasts.

Not having arranged for a successor to Carr during Lloyd's last season has to rank as Martin's biggest blunder, but the radio deal is right up there.  It infuriates me that I cannot listen to the M games on WJR here in Ohio after years and years of turning the TV on mute and listening to Brandstatter and Beckmann.

Kick me all you want; I'm sick of Beckman and Brandy....  They're a few years away from human cloning.  Someone has some of Ufer's DNA somewhere...

Ufer was unique and an extreme homer.  I like listening to his highlights but was not a huge fan of his broadcasts.  Did you used to listen to his broadcasts live?  Great Michigan proponent but not for everyone.  I prefer Beckman.

I will gladly kick you.  Maybe its because of my age and the nostalgia that came with growing up listening to Brandy do both UM and Lions games, but IMO nothing says crisp, cool autumn days on the gridiron than the sound of his voice doing color.

Also, he's the original host of the greatest sports show of all time, which goes without saying.  But I'll say it anyways, Michigan Replay. Someone please cue the Michigan Replay intro music

since 2006 have validated WJR's decision to dump UM for MSU. The Spartan basketball program has continued to shine, and the football program appears to be (temporarily, we hope) the stronger of the two programs, with the three straight victories over us. Brandon's hand would be stronger if the RR era had not been a huge disappointment.

I've always liked Beckmann as a play-by-play guy, but he's not as good as he was 10-15 years ago. His delivery is not nearly as crisp or energetic, and he's more gravelly and growly, which I guess matches his meathead get-off-my-lawn political show.

are you referring to WJR karma?

BTW - sparty BB sucked last year (it was a gift they were invited to the NCAA tourney!)

As to the broadcast - I'm still pissed that I need a special radio in the stands just to hear the play by play without a delay.  I know its an easy way to make a few $$$ - as if $3 bottled water doesn't add to the bottom line.

The former GM at WJR, Michael Feezy, knew nothing about sports. All he knew was that Bill Martin was a jerk to him and WJR. Michigan was a loss-leader for WJR. They made no money from M directly. And yet, Martin was trying to squeze yet more out of WJR. Then along comes MSU and they offer to actually pay WJR and offer a true partnership. It was a no brainer for Feezy. What's dissapointing is that Brandon couldn't win WJR back. They signed an extension with MSU a few months ago. And now Feezy is gone, too.

Maybe with basketball the deal with MSU is better (why couldn't we have offered them M basketball?), but I guarantee you on football Saturdays WJR takes a huge ratings hit by not having Michigan. It's too bad because they had a whole team covering Michigan games and it just seemed RIGHT and like they really enjoyed all the traditions at the Big House, etc. Hearing those same people now covering Sparty just seems so fakey and contrived, just another work day.
