Twitter - Any suggestions?

Submitted by BlockM on
So I've been using twitter a bit recently mostly because it's a good way to get info about Michigan sports, and it's a good way to get notified of new blog posts. I'm also following a bunch of people just because they're hilarious though... John Mayer (johncmayer), Birdman Andersen (birdmanandersen, not verified yet), and the Sklar brothers (sklarbrothers) usually keep me smirking throughout the day. Does anyone have any other good people to follow, either for good info or for a laugh?

myself with the twitter experience as yet and am unclear how it works. Is this like a myspace or facebook thing or what? I am not trying to be an ass (though I may appear to be one now), I am genuinely interested.

It's essentially the same as Facebook status updates. You see a stream of all the updates of people you're following. Using it for communication and social networking seems pretty dumb, but it does a pretty good job of 1) notifying me when there are new MGoBlog posts (along with other sources... UMHoops, the Michigan athletic department, etc.) and 2) keeping me occupied. A bunch of celebrities and other people have some pretty funny stuff they throw on there.

But you have to follow: @TheFatJew - Just strange and funny as hell. My vote for next poet laureate. @Trelvix - also random, but funny. Very Christopher Walken-y @BillCorbett and @kwmurphy are from MST3K. Nuff said. Sports and awesome? Go for @Daniel_Artest, Ron's brother. For a good list of all athletes, SportsIn140.com is pretty helpful.

I follow a few people I find funny (eg., Rainn, Shaq) but for the most part, I find twitter redundant. I stay up to date with my friends via facebook, and my web sites via RSS.

I like the Club Trillion Twitter updates and the website for that matter. It's done by a walkon (Mark Titus) of the dark side. Pretty hilarious stuff. Stuff about proper stripper etiquette and for the most part he avoids ripping on Michigan too much.

So do you just keep getting txt msgs everytime someone updates their status? is this how it works? Or do you have to go to a browser or something? I could see using it on my cell phone when i'm bored, but im skeptical...

When you follow someone, you can specify whether you want to receive txt message notifications. There's an option to toggle your preference for each individual that appears after you follow them. The big thing about Twitter is how flexible it is—after all, it's just plain text. It can be used for direct communication (Direct Messages can be like email or IM), public discussions (@replies between two or more people), or one-way communication (regular updates and retweets can be classified as micro-blogging). Also, the extensibility that Twitter gives through it's API allows it to be modified or used through almost any service imaginable. Overall, it's this openess about what Twitter is or what you can do with it that really makes it special.
