Transfer Portal Numbers
Saw a Twitter post from a reputable source on B1G transfer portal entries. It shows the B1G East with:
PSU 20
Michigan 14
Rutgers 11
Maryland 9
Indiana 8
OSU 7
MSU 2
These numbers were way higher than I anticipated, am I alone in being surprised?
No, it will get worse before it gets better. PSU had 22 last time I checked with at least one staying at PSU. Maybe two.
Yeah, PSU is at 22. So the OP's 20 number isn't the most up-to-date (I'm not trying to be a smart-ass there, these #s are just fluid).
3 of the 22 are back to PSU and another 3 with a still unknown landing spot.
I looked at the list on 247. Some of the guys on our list shouldn't really count.
How is Wheatley JR on the 2019 list?
Or Mbem-Bosse?
Plus several of the guys in the "portal" would have been transferring whether you called it a transfer or a portal. Or they're already gone and not still in the "portal".
If you've already gone somewhere else are you still considered in the portal? And if so, why?
Whatever you call it, I'm interested in the guys that were on the team last year that either transferred or are looking to transfer.

We do have a fuck ton of attrition per year. Like even more than the new normal in the college FA era.

We complain about insufficient talent, complain about attrition and complain about recruiting. This fan base can be positively schizophrenic. And our situation and players are different than the team situation and players at psu or any other school here.
There was a lot of talk awhile back about scholarships should be a mandatory 4 years and how Alabama was scummy because of the surprise gray shirt situation and forcing people out. It's bittersweet that we're not in the Gerald Ford days when people picked a school and then played football to prove that our school is tougher than yours. If you got hurt you played baseball or ran track against Jesse Owens, but stayed at your school. Today, players pick a coach/program and it is basically a minor league. They skip bowl games and are processed out if they're not going to play. It sort of blows, but the good ole days aren't coming back at least for D1.
Always a bummer when it doesn't work out for a player. Especially bummed to see James Hudson and Oliver Martin go in the last year as they seemed like they would be contributors. Martin will be a star at Iowa.
Also, Martin doesn't really fit the new offense. WRs seem to be needed in 3 flavors: (1) tall athletic jump-ball deep threats (like Collins), (2) speed demon mid-range guys (like DPJ) and (3) wiggle guys at the slot (like Sainristil).
Oliver Martin is more your classic possession type receiver who runs precise routes in a Pep Hamilton type offense ... which is a better fit at Iowa and I agree he could be a star in that system.
I agree that upgrading is a useful tool for roster management, but some positions are getting pretty thin. I don't think any one here wants to keep fielding a team of promising freshmen every other year. They need to build depth among the upper classmen. This isn't basketball where you can field a mostly underclassmen laden starting unit and expect to win consistently. Eventually we need a two deep that isn't dependent on incoming freshmen or grad transfers.
So now that it's fully Harbaughs kids after this year (all kids from hoke will exhaust all their eligibility this upcoming season, right? ) do you expect the attrition to slow down?
It seems to me several data points need to be tracked:
-matriculation year/class (fr/so/jr/sr)
-playing time
-landing school (Transfer up/equal/downgrade)
Kids wanna play. Pre portal, if you weren’t a starter, you would find satisfaction in contributing through scout teams/etc for 4/5 years. Now if you think you’ve got game that could see real on field playing time somewhere else, you enter the portal. Am I missing something?
Was Oliver Martin a bit of roster management ? It was very odd he came to campus, met with the coaches and then went to one workout before he bolted. Did he find out going into camp he was 3rd string on the depth chart and checked out the 4 in-coming frosh WRs in workouts and said "Man, I am rarely going to see the field in the remainder of my career at Michigan" ... at Iowa he will be a starter for sure and maybe lead dog at WR. Hand writing was on the wall and did the coaches effectively guide him out of the program ? It does make room for more "speed in space" WRs for the 2020 class.

RCMB has two long threads as far as I can tell - the transfer thread and one about how ESPN is out to screw them about Nassar and Izzo/Dantonio. A third might also be about hitting on attractive coeds, mostly populated by men who are probably a bit too old for it.
RCMB just needs to understand their number would be a lot higher if prison was the same thing as the transfer portal.
Do lower numbers mean players are getting better perks?
No, it means the coaches are promising playing time to keep them from transferring.
Not really, no. Each player is its own case and these numbers aren’t statistically significant yet due to low sample size. A ten year look back on the portal and it’s impact will be interesting.

Hopefully the attrition we are seeing now is just part of the growing pains of building an elite program. However, if Michigan keeps losing 3+ games a year and continues to get beat in the biggest games....then maybe the staff needs to re-evaluate how they are doing things. I’m not saying I have the answers. Just an observation. This much attrition seems bad, but I’m taking a wait and see approach. You are going to have attrition....especially in this day and age where most kids want instant gratification, but it seems this staff is having a harder time than most programs in getting kids to buy in.
Michigan fans used to complain about SEC programs doing this before Harbaugh. We kinda gotta accept it if this is how we’re going to compete.

Well in football we are doing what everyone else does in terms of processing for roster management.

I’m talking about recruiting and retaining kids who are on your roster, not x’s and o’s on the field. Is this much attrition healthy is the question. Maybe? We’ll see....
How’s much attrition had been guys we hated to lose ? Solomon and who else ? I’m sure I’m missing 1-3. But most of it is improving our roster.
I don't think Solomon will be missed. He left for a reason and it wasn't academics.
His ranking and actual play didn’t seem to jive. But hey it’s early-ish on for him maybe he’ll still develop

Hard to say....I’m not sure if it’s a good thing if we are forced to start plugging true freshmen in in spots because our depth has been diminished so badly by attrition. A certain level of attrition is a good thing, but I don’t necessarily buy that having this many highly tooted recruits walk out the door after only a year or two on campus is a good thing. I hope I am wrong.....I hope I’m wrong as hell.
Does anyone know if there is a database that tracks portal entries and where they end up? I would like to make some visual charts if I had the data.
