Touch the Banner’s Season Countdown
For those of you who are not familiar, every summer over at Touch the Banner, Magnus does a season countdown of players, one a day until he gets to number one (I think on the day before the season starts). There end up being three general parts (these are my categories, not ones Magnus uses).
1. Walk-ons and scholarship players who are not likely to play a significant role.
2. Players (generally scholarship) who are likely to play a role on special teams and as backups but are likely names we will be hearing much more about next season.
3. Starters and backups who are likely to make a real impact this year.
The list is getting into category #2 and is up to # 59 (Nolan Rumler). Other recent entries have been: Andrel Anthony, Raheem Anderson, Joey Velazquez and Rayshaun Benny.
Dang, I was expecting to see Magnus doing his own shameless self-promotion.
Must be Magnus' burner MGoBlog account.
Just joking - I like to mess with Magnus.
Love his comments and his blog.
Missing his sexy bits, though.
Low hanging fruit.
Ripe for the picking.
I wonder how many people have burner accounts. I have a second account but primarily so that if I get kicked off for getting into an argument on something off topic like climate change or covid, I don’t have to come back as a total newbie. Definitely not Magnus. I know way less about football.
Since the focus was football, I failed to note that Matt was also a great addition. Loving his basketball content.
You need a burner account around here in case you have 1 conservative viewpoint. They’ll look you up and out you after banning you.
if you are still a republican in the year 2021 then yes you should be hiding your identity in public forums. but if you lose your job b/c you said something beyond the pale on a blog, you can always move to texas and become an abortion bounty hunter. which is a great plan b that the rest of us don't have.
What a stupid thing to say
There is a much easier Plan B if that’s your goal
Meh, Ace is ancient history so that threat has largely dissipated. Brian could care less about the message boards, hasn’t posted in years.
DM me on Twitter for my sexybits.
You just missed #NationalNudeDay.
i wouldn't say we missed it...
Yeah, bring back the women
you mean there are michigan blogs that do content leading up to the season
like maybe an article about each of the incoming class
or something
I’m just holding out that there will be a section for this in HTTV this year
Is there going to be a HTTV this summer? It's usually out in June. I always look forward to it, but was losing hope that there was going to be one this year. Maybe I missed some posts about it at some point.
Seth said he was hoping to have an announcement about its release in the next week or so. Sounds like it’s largely complete and almost ready for prime time.
I wouldn’t hold my breath on a HTTV this year.
My intention was definitely not to trash Mgoblog. I actually think that bringing in Brendan as an intern was a great idea. It injects a new voice to the blog and provides an internship opportunity which can be so valuable to someone just starting out. Seth has also been putting out some good stuff. It makes sense to me that lots of summer resources here go to putting out Hail to the Victors.
I definitely miss features like, 27 tickets and the summer freshman profiles. They were also features I eagerly looked forward to.
I am loving the content on the front page lately. Matt EM is a great addition, and Brendan is doing a great job too. Excellent content!
Thanks for the shout out!
I didn't know he did that and he would never bring it up himself.
Will check out, for sure!
Candidly for pure Michigan football content only TTB is probably superior to this site. The only drawbacks, to me anyways, are he doesn't cover other sports and there's not an active sideboard for discussion. I mean it's there but hardly anyone uses it.
But if you're looking for Michigan football information Magnus is definitely the man.
*Edited: explained better by DonAZ below*
Magnus’ content is great. I would get behind a Kickstarter or something to help the site’s infrastructure to help the aesthetic and the user applicability of the site.
Gracias, senor!
Added bonus: you can vote to predict who will be Michigan's leading rusher in 2020!
I hope I got it right.
Last year, I voted for Charbonnet. We know how that worked out.
For what it's worth, Magnus / Thunder has two TTB sites:
https://touch-the-banner.com/
http://touchthebanner.blogspot.com/
The first is his "main" site, but comments do not work there. Apparently some new software update broke commenting, and to fix that he would need to reconstruct the site. Given his traffic and revenue is *way* down from its peak, he seemed to indicate it wasn't worth it at the moment.
So the second site is his original site, and commenting still works there. The content is more or less identical at both sites.
His evaluation of football players is really insightful.
I like his willingness to go out on a limb and provide numerical ratings.
Thank you! I totally forgot that Magnus was also updating the old site so as to enable commenting. Foolishly, I've been using the new site and have been missing the lack of discussion, as I always enjoy when Magnus engages directly with user questions and comments.
TTB's countdown is extra useful and important this year (IMO) because we're getting (boo) no recruiting profiles on MGoBlog.
As a long-time resident, this site is a mere shadow of its former self. MGoBlog got me through the rough RR/Hoke era with great content and discussions. Seems like Brian doesn’t care about football anymore and is only focused on revenue. Even his columns like UV suck compared to years ago.
Magnus has done well despite being the illegitimate son of Norwegian King Olaf II Haraldsson.
I enjoyed when his son Erik played RT for us a few years back.
How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore
And a Norwegian, dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot
In Southeastern Michigan by providence impoverished
In squalor, grow up to be a hero and a blogger?
Have really enjoyed this countdown over the years. And this year, the most important players IMO are DJ Turner, Vincent Gray, Mazi Smith, and Chris Hinton. We desperately need the corners to elevate their game--I feel good, not great, about Green--and it's time for the linemen to play up to their rankings.
You surely have your points but to not include, a third, a truly competent QB causes me to cast a wary eye. In today's "light them up" offensive philosophies that even Alabama struggles to contain you had better get with the program or even Rutgers will kick your butt.
HELLO, EVERYONE!
Thanks to blue in dc for the publicity. I just spent all day in the car headed to vacation, logged into MGoBlog, and saw that you guys were talking about the site. That was a pleasant surprise.
Regarding some of the comments above, my Wordpress theme is now outdated at touch-the-banner.com and the comment feature is no longer functioning. I inquired about how to update it, and I was told it would basically take $3,400+ to re-theme the site. Due to Google AdSense falling through the floor over the past couple years, I don't make nearly as much as I used to with advertising on the site.
So I do post (almost) each post on touch-the-banner.com as well as touchthebanner.blogspot.com in order to let people comment. I want to re-theme the website, but I have other bills/home projects that have jumped ahead in priority level for now.
Ah yes, the shameless self-promotion returns.
Hope you have a great family vacation, Magnus!
Enjoy your vacation and thanks for the great content
