Today's Schedule of Games

Submitted by M-Dog on September 25th, 2021 at 9:30 AM

As good as last week was for interesting matchups, today is a snoozer. It's a good day to watch college football with one eye and get chores done with the other.

At noon: Notre Dame - Wisconsin in Chicago. Wisconsin's old QB versus Wisconsin's new (but not necessarily improved) QB. It does us no good to have Wisconsin lose this week. I want Wisconsin to win this and get the Notre Dame hyped-for-losing-to-Clemson nonsense off my TV. But . . . I can't convince myself that Wisconsin will win. I'm thinking Notre Dame in a close one. I hope that's wrong.

That's about it for noon. Maybe Texas Tech - Texas for the morbidly curious to see if Texas goes full Florida State.

At 3:30: Michigan - Rutgers. We get to see how the Michigan running game fares against a team dedicated to stopping it, with a coherent plan and the players to do so. We'll get to see what Michigan's 3rd and long passing game looks like. The offense won't be as efficient and smooth as it has been, but it won't matter. Rutgers' pedestrian offense will keep it low scoring until we figure it out.

Also at 3:30: The only matchup of ranked teams, Texas A&M - Arkansas. Is Arkansas for real? No.

At 3:30 as well: Clemson - NC State could be worth a peek to see what to make of this season's still-top-10-ranked Clemson. Are they just living off the work of previous seasons? Yup.

Also at 3:30: If you want to watch the train not only wreck, but also fall of the bridge and crush the village, check in on Louisville - Florida State and see if FSU keeps digging into the abyss.

At night at 7:00 Nebraska - Michigan State. Sparty looks for real and *gasp* disciplined, while Nebraska/Adrian Martinez look erratic. It won't matter how many Husker fans show up at Spartan stadium, MSU wins in workman-like fashion.

Late night: Your Pac 12 After Dark special - meaningless football just for the fun of it. What's this? It looks like just about the entire Pac 12 has moved to After Dark. Probably to hide. In any case, take your pick from Cal - Washington, Arizona - Oregon, Oregon State - USC, Colorado - Arizona State

I can't convince myself that Wisconsin will win.

I can't either. Would Paul Chryst hire an OC like Steve Sarkisian? Why even ask.

Is Arkansas for real?

Ya, they probably belong ranked where they are. But I don't think A&M belongs ranked as high as they are. Who knows, maybe Arkansas can pull it off.

Sparty looks for real and *gasp* disciplined

Mel Tucker is a much better coach than most people know. State is 3-0 but there is real question about their defense.

Colorado State at #5 Iowa   3:30 PM   FS1

Is Iowa going to be in another struggle that will emphasize even more the question marks about them?

Tennessee at #11 Florida   7:00 PM   ESPN

This article sums it up for Tennessee's QB position:

On the surface, Hooker is the obvious choice. He is completing over 70 percent of his passes and averaging nearly eight yards an attempt, while Milton is completing under 52 percent of his passes and averaging under five and a half yards an attempt.

Even on advanced metrics, Hooker has a better yards per attempt average on passes from behind the line of scrimmage, 0-10 yards and 10-20 yards. Add in the obvious Milton overthrows on deep balls we’ve seen with the eye test, and Hooker is the better passer. He’s also the better runner, averaging over six yards a carry while Milton averages under five and a half.

....it comes down to those two final drives against Pitt.

When the Vols had the ball down 41-34 and brought up 4th and 1 at the Pitt 3-yard line, Hooker was given an RPO play. In spite of an obvious attack up the middle by the Panthers, he handed it off anyway. Heupel could make the case that Milton would have known to keep it and run, at which point he would have walked in for a touchdown.

Then, on the next drive, with another chance to tie, Hooker threw an interception over the middle. The pass was a poor decision, and while he’s more accurate than Milton, it’s a safe bet Milton would have known to not make that throw. Pitt was then able to run out the clock and win.

That’s it. Those two plays alone are the only reason there’s even any debate about who Tennessee football’s starting quarterback should be.

Reading this over I'm astonished by how few fanbases are actually happy with their head coach and the direction of their program. Alabama, Georgia, Florida, maybe Texas A&M. Clemson? Don't think their too happy right now. In the Big Ten you got Iowa which is just happy with 8-4 and the occasional sniff of winning the division. With Michigan, Penn State, even OSU it's what have you done for me lately.

But if there's any place where the BPONE could possibly exceed Michigan's (max levels of expectations, arrogance, past success, money cannon, massive fanbase) it's the University of Texas. They are already writing off the next three years before they can fire another unsuccessful head coach.

Agreed that a Wisconsin win over ND would benefit our matchup next weekend in Madison. As long they win rather ugly. Certainly a priority early game to watch.

Next is Sparty at home against Nebraska. That's the late game priority game to watch.

Michigan's offense should be a big test to that Rutgers defense. If we can run on them, then it should result in a blow out win for the Maize and Blue. Our defense should handle the Rutgers offense but not a shut out. Go Blue!

Here's my stupid uniformed "i called it first" upset of the weekend. Nebraska beats MSU. Sparty had gotta start Sparting at some point. Night game. At home. Nebraska. That sounds right.

Is Arkansas for real?  The better question: Is Texas A&M for real?  37 yards of total offense in one half against unranked Colorado?  Scored with 2 minutes left to win 10-7?  Minnesota destroyed the Buffs last week.  And the Aggies got to hold on to their #7 national ranking because they beat New Mexico 30-0?  They’re the biggest fraud in the top ten so far.

In terms of all games, this might be the dullest day of the college football year.

UM fans should, as awful as it feels, root for ND today.  Two reasons:

1. Wisc is ranked #18.  If Wisc loses, and UM wins, guarantees UM passes Wisc in the rankings and makes it more likely UM will be a small favorite at Wisc next week.  Harbaugh's teams seem to play better when they are the favorite.

2. You dont want Wisconsin to have confidence going into the UM game next week.  A loss to ND helps to deflate Wisconsin's confidence.

I'll watch the A&M/Ark game, then the Sparty game.  I kinda think Sparty is for real.  If Sparty can whoop two Big-5 teams in a row, on the road, then Sparty's gotta be for real.

Go Huskers!
