Thoughts on OL having the upper hand so far?

Submitted by Human Torpedo on

Based on the practice intel that we seem to be getting, it appears the OL is more than holding their own against our supposingly dominant DL. IMO this is way more encouraging for the offensive line than troubling for the defensive front four. Although maybe our DL could be a bit overrated as well. I saw the same thing to a degree in the spring game. IMO this could be our most dynamic and balanced offense since 2003. Even better than 2010

have you ever played or coached football? let me asked you a question, if a team happened to have the greatest oline and greatest dline in history, what do you think would happened when they practiced against each other?

Yep. Other than objective info like injuries and deployments (who's with the 1s), hard to understand why anyone would put stock in subjective "intel" after Freddy Footwork, Bolden looking lights-out, O'Korn looking better than Rudock, BTN saying we looked physical in 2014 and the countless other assessments in recent years.

Drawing conclusions about how good the OL or DL are is like trying to whip up a thick beef stew out of a couple of 10-year old boullion cubes, an old carrot, a shrunken potato, and a teaspoon of lard.

Bon appetit.

I haven't heard anything on this subject. I'm sure the DL guys are working hard in practice. Though I would assume that sometimes it can be difficult to rush the QB with a high level of aggression and bad attention against your own teammates. The DL is probably not carrying the same emotions they would have against an opponent on game day. Sometimes you need to get a little angry to play good defense in football.

I get that people are desperate for football, but this is really making something out of nothing. Very little information is available, and what little is said will always be positive. We know next to nothing about what's going on.

Let me guess.

OP saw the one clip of Gary going against one OL on one play, he didnt get past him (looked like he got held). amd from that one clip the OP draws the conclusion the OL is holding its own.

Did I get that right?

About "our supposedly great DL" not being as good as advertised. Scout does however mention how good the DL is. M-live however has an article on how good the DL should be this year. Etc? I have not heard of that magazine or media outlet but I am however sure they do mention how good UM DL will be this year.

Can you say TROLL? I know when I see one. I would rather walk to East Landfill, then put the word Sparta on anything I come in contact with.

Mostly that the DL is rotating a lot.  It does speak to a big drop off after the top 6 guys though (Charlton, Gary, Wormley, Glasgow, Hurst, Mone).  That's one reason Onwenu and Asiasi have been getting looks on the DL. They don't have a full 2 deep on the ends, but if Onwenu can fill in at DT for spot snaps, then that could allow Wormley to play more at DE.

I wouldn't assume Newsome is locked in at LT, though, or that Kalis has a secure job either.

My editor at the Michigan Daily would have rejected the OP headline and had it rewritten with more clarity. "So how do you feel wearing the ugliest gown at the ball?" [ -- based on wife's opinion of said woman's gown ]
