JWG Wolverine

I came into my sixth season of running "There are..." with the intention of hitting unprecedented highs, but it would never have been possible without the unprecedented level of support all along those 100 days!

As is tradition per this post, here's the Google Doc with every player I've ever featured (with increasingly more detail about the other features). Please peruse at your greatest enjoyment:

HAPPY GAMEDAY!

Chicks will always dig scars, but ever since #0 made its football debut I was waiting for a player/moment worth putting in this spot for the foreseeable future. You already knew I couldn’t end this one any other way, it’s finally here…

It’s also Mello time!!

ENJOY!!!

Addressing the MMB album side of things, I’ll just say that there’s a reason I featured the discography this year. Two words:

STAY TUNED!

Also to bring things full circle, here's the first recording of The Victors (1925) as well as the greatest fight song ever written paired with Varsity in the 40s:

It has a sound:

It is the sound of the wail of a marching band in full stride. The sound of pads and helmets colliding with violence. The sound of a family cheering in a living room. The sound of a quarterback calling signals. The sound of the cheerleaders yelling in their megaphones. The sound of a crowd roaring on a third down. The sound of Howard King or Carl Grapentine intoning, "Good Afternoon..."

It has a feel:

The feel of being wedged shoulder-to-shoulder for 3 hours on a cold afternoon in a light snow and you do not care. The feel of the emptiness in your stomach as your body shakes, nervous, as your team trails in the second half. The feel of ecstasy when your team scores to take the lead. Or when an Ohio State defender dives at the feet of Donovan Edwards... and misses.

It has a taste:

You know what it is for you. Maybe it is the hot dog you ate when you went to a stadium for the first time as a kid. Or a warm pizza consumed in the den with your kids while the game plays on the tv. For me the taste of a bag of fresh donuts and cider from Wiards on a crisp fall afternoon.

It has a smell:

A grill at a tailgate party. The charcoal or the propane, with hot dogs or hamburgers simmering. You smell the same aroma of smoke that you remember from outside the stadium concourse and it comes to you. Or the smell of popcorn, or marshmallows in full flight.

It has a sight:

The images are wonderful. The awe as you walk through a cramped tunnel and a massive stadium opens up before you. 100 winged helmets charging beneath a banner and gathering on the sideline. The effortless movement of a marching band in formation, moving as if a single organism. The green of the field and the brilliant colors of the end zone. And the images we will never forget: Desmond diving for a catch. Woodson leaping for a pick. Haskins in full hurdle in the snow.

It has a name:

Football.

A delight for the senses. A tome of memory, of experience, of agony, of joy. A child's dream, an adult's playground. A tradition from Great Lake to Southern Grove to Rocky Mountain to Pacific Coast.

It is our greatest game.

Football is here.

JWG: I admire your energy and dedication to Michigan football. Really, I do.

After all these years, and I say this respectfully, I still don't think your use of message board space is justified. Your ardent fans (including one that ... can't wait) would surely disagree.

I have data. And, yes, I'm nuts for keeping track of this. But, it didn't take more than a few seconds to dump the day's information in "LibreOffice Calc." :)

Average number of responses: 11

Not bad, but most likely well under average for the message board. It's early in the morning and "RIP Jimmy Buffett" (OT for sure) already has 10.

It's worse, though. Average number of *your* responses: 3. That makes our average total 8.

One more thing ...

There's one of these for dang near every one of your posts. The average response total is now 7. (Here's the nadir for the series: https://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/there-are-1015)

I like that you put NIL information in the posts. There's good history, too, with sometimes obscure Michigan players from the past who've worn number ##. (The jewelry posts don't so much for me.)

Could this be done another way? Could you maybe bunch your posts into an every-ten-day format?

Sometimes "There are ..." just crowds out a Taylor Swift post. But there are many other times when it bumps something interesting about Michigan sports.

That's all ...

Blue Heron, you usually make lots of sense. And you may be right in your quantitative analysis. Perhaps there should be a protocol to cut off messages without many responses.

For instance, not being allowed to comment until 20,000 points. (That's a joke. Please envision my friendly grin as I write that. Not only was I—obviously—once under 20,000, I got negged for some offense when I was starting out, and had to start over.)

But not all things require great numbers. Those of us who know the well-known names vastly outnumber those who watch the intricacies of play (see Seth) or the small details of the experience (see stephenjrking, above). Yet those intricacies and small details matter too.

Again, you may be right. But I want to stand up for jwg wolverine. "There are . . ." hurts no one and brings pleasure to many, those who respond and those who don't.

Thank you, jwg.

Also, GO, BLUE! We're finally here!!
