Super Bowl Discussion + Pickin' and Grinnin'

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

Super Bowl L (50) is 8 days away.  Panthers are favored by 4.5 to 6 pts, with a signif amount of variance in the line.   Game will be at the 49'ers new stadium in the Bay area south of SF.  I am told the new stadium is beautiful.

So, who are you picking and why?  Do you pick b/c of who you think will win, or who you want to win?   Does the hype about the Peyton v. Cam match-up impact your choice?

And while we're at it, are any of our Mgobloggers going to the game?  Anybody ever been to a Super Bowl before?

Everybody have a great Saturday.  Must profess some envy for the group of you going to the basketball and hockey game today with a meet-up in between.  Have fun and Go Blue!

Butter on toast usually (maybe with jam on top, too), but if you're really feeling adventurous you can try some of that vegemite they talk about in the land of Blake O'Neill. It's okay

As for the spread for the Pro Bowl, IBT says Team Irvin -3.

Carolina: because the media and fan narrative seems to be turning Cam Newton into a professional wrestling "heel" and Peyton Manning into a "face."  I appreciate good "heel" work; I hope Newton can validate his career next Sunday and give himself the right to laugh every time he sees or hears the phrase "Scam Newton."

I don't think it'll be a blowout because the Bronco defense is legit, but it'll be one where the Broncos are consistently down 1-2 TDs and never really feel like they're "in it." The Panthers defense just stifles Manning and Cam keeps doing his thing. He is an otherworldly talent that can carry that whole team by himself.

This game will further signify a changing of the guard. The era of Brady and Manning is coming to an end. The likes of Newton and Wilson are the new faces of the NFL.

Panthers 31-17.

Panthers...in spite of beating the Pats and Manning throwing for a couple of TD's, the guy is done.  His arm is dead.  His stats were terrible and against a team in much better shape than the Pats, I think Carolina grabs a couple of INT's and wins by 14.  Newton has become a force.

The Pats shut down the Broncos running game and if you put enough pressure on Manning, he is toast.

Panthers. Their defense is almost as good as Denver's and their offensive line is better than the Patriots'. When Denver is successful applying pressure on Cam he can get out and run and they'll have to account for that. Panthers by 10+.

Panthers 38-7. No parlay on the over/under. Heavy bet on Carolina.

Interesting factoid-in something like 45 of the 50 Super Bowls the spread meant nothing. Either the favorite covered OR the underdog won outright. So if you think Denver and their extra lucky white unis are the better team-bet them-and don't worry about the points.

I could see Carolina getting ahead very early by multiple scores and then both teams settling in for one of those games where the score is always 10 points.

I both want and believe that Carolina will win. Denver's defense is the real deal, but I bet Cam's legs give them (relative) fits. The Carolina defense will definitely stifle a very old Manning.

While it would be insane to expect another Seattle-Denver style blow-out, I get the feeling that Carolina will be in control most of the way.

Carolina Panthers.

I live in NC and used to be a PSL owner. I'm picking them because I want them to win and also because I think the Broncos' offense is garbage.

I think this panthers team is better than the Seahawks team that put the beat down on the Broncos a couple of years ago. Now, that score was definitely a little flukey. At the same time, this Broncos team is not as good as it was a couple years ago. The defense is better, and that may keep them in the game. But the offense is way worse. And the panthers offense is far better than any the Broncos have faced this year. I'm guessing panthers win big.

That SEA/DEN Super Bowl was nuts. The Broncos botched the opening snap and then just seemed to collectively think, "welp, I guess there goes this game..." I think Seattle scored in every possible way, or close to: rushing TD, passing TD, kick return TD, INT return TD.

It was a mess of a game from top to bottom - one of the rare instances in which a blow out was super fun to watch; how else can the Broncos fuck this up?

I pick Carolina. I want both to lose, but since that is not an option I will root for Carolina because I feel bad for Cam Newton. It must have been hard to take a pay cut when he left Auburn.

Heard yesterday that somebody dropped something like $600K on Carolina on a single bet in Vegas. Course he's only going to take like $330k on a win, but there's not a lot of love for Denver out there.

Carolina will win. They have a balance of a good offense with a good defense. Denver has a great defense with a mediocre offense.

Been a die hard Broncos fan since "the drive" when i was in 6th grade. Cam scares me. Only QB all season to have a good game against Denver is Big Ben. Cam has better mobility in the pocket, and will be able to pick up yards when the coverage is good down field. That being said, the Denver linebackers will be so important in this game. Broncos NEED to be able to run the ball. If they can do that, and avoid turnovers I think they can win. Really want to see Peyton get another ring in his last game as well as Pat Bowlen. Go Broncos!!!!

the guy is supremely physically talented, and has now learned the pro game re: passing.  it takes any QB a few years to get the coverages and progressions down pat, which he has done, and i would say he is the most exceptional pure athlete to play the position in terms of power, size, and speed.   i wish he wasn't such a showboat which bristle brushes me, but the guy is one heck of a QB.

only NFL playoff game I've ever been to was a Miami-Buffalo game during the Marino era. which he lost of course. As for next week's game, it should be pretty good for a half before Carolina pulls away. Panthers have been the best team by far all year, so no complaints, but it would be nice to see Manning go out with another ring. I'll say, Carolina 30, Denver 20.

are the better team and will win the game. That Bronco defense is very good but Cam Newton has been fantastic in the postseason and Carolina has a running game that balances their offense and will diminish the effectiveness of the Bronco pass rush since there will be so few instances of third and long for Miller etc. al to let loose on. Carolina 28 Denver 17

I have always hated Denver... I have always hated Tennessee...I have always hated Manning...once Manning went to Denver...easy to root against. On the other hand...Cam is very exciting to watch...all in on Carolina. Denver's D is good so I don't think this will be another Seattle v Denver game, but Manning is going to have a rough day.
