Spoiler Alert: Michigan rugby

Submitted by Fhshockey112002 on
Michigan Rugby lost in the quarterfinals to top seed Cal 31-0 this morning.

Still back to back seasons making it to the knock out round is a great accomplishment.

This was essentially a matchup of a club team vs the equivalent of a top flight recruited varsity squad. Michigan rugby doesn't recruit at all and simply relies on general student body interest. Cal provides scholarships, admission assistance, and only takes the best high school players in the state of California out of high school.

Several players, including 2 All-americans, were in my fraternity when I was there and no schollies to be had. And by the way...Cal has won like 22 of the last 28 NCAA championships. The past 4 years they have lost in the final to BYU...always tough matches as witnessed by this year's 30-27 loss.

Cal has a great team. They destroyed Navy this year too. Cal has scored over 100 points four times this year and only lost one college game (BYU). Ask Texas how good they are. Cal 100 Texas 7, Cal 105 Ore St 5. Cal 106 UC Santa Clara 0. Cal 100 ASU 17.

santa clara is a jesuit school, not affiliated with the UC system

and this cal squad def is THE permier rugby squad nationally

there are very few universities that offer scholarships for rugby, but heres cal's coach addressing it

CM: Correct me if I’m wrong, but Cal was unique in having a varsity rugby team. The other teams you compete against are clubs, right?

JC: That’s mostly correct, but it’s one of the things that was painful to hear coming from the University, because it came across as almost a justification for rugby’s demotion. In reality, the very best teams we play against have everything that we have and, in some cases, a lot more. In the semifinals last year we played an Arkansas State team that had thirteen South Africans on the squad. At Brigham Young University, there’s a lot of admissions help given to players. At Utah, they can give kids in-state tuition. How great would in-state tuition be at Cal for our out-of-state players? We even lose a kid every once in a while to St. Mary’s College because the Christian brothers can put together a little aid package for them, which we can’t here.

CM: None of your players get scholarships?

JC: No, we’re a non-scholarship team. Actually we pay into the University just under one million dollars in fees and tuition; that is, the parents of my players do. But back to your first question: Did we receive a varsity letter and were we part of intercollegiate athletics, and is that somewhat unique within college rugby, the answer is yes to all of that. But that’s it.

I think most college rugby players sign up for the reasons I did: d3 hockey seemed pointless as an 6 hour bus ride to Watertown Maine sucks, but you still want to hurt someone and drink beer. The idea that colleges recruit for it is funny to me.

As I know making the knockout finals is the obvious goal during pool play I have a question:

How are the "plate", "shield", and "bowl" knockouts determined/ranked? Also, for a club like Michigan if they wouldn't have made the top 8 would they likely have won the (plate/bowl/shield)?

they are determined by final pool rankings. CRC is different because they have 'wild cards' that make the cup competition based off of record and points. U of M would have done well in any of those brackets but the cup is what you really want to be in. Cal looked beatable yesterday and Navy appeared to be the best. Day 2 obviously is telling a different story.
