Sparty finally coming to terms with being Little Brother

Submitted by Blusqualo on November 26th, 2023 at 4:00 PM

In a forum on RCMB (I know, I know), about their new coach’s lack of midwest experience they say the guy will do well because he gets the nature of the UM/MSU rivalry; Ore States biggest rival is Oregon, Oregons is Washington. Oregon is the state favorite, etc…

They then go on to call OSU, Wazzu, Mississippi State, Ok State seem to be our (little) Brothers in Arms.

There are a lot of teams in the college ranks that are facing a reckoning in the next 5 to 10 years, as the talent and success coalesces more and more to the [pick a number] top teams.  The money potential of a 'super-conference' that plays a season full of action-packed super-conference games will be too much to resist.  Those on the outside will be ... on the outside.  They can still play football, and still enjoy good games against comparable talent, but the idea of being "among the best" will be gone.  It pains me to think about that, because I grew up on 1970s Big Ten football.  But the handwriting is on the wall, in my opinion.

If it is of any help to any of you, any time a Sparty tries to badger me about the recent goings-on, I tell them they wish that they had this kind of national relevance. Which is a major part of why the story got as big as it did, and how everything happened as quickly as it did, even though it may not have seemed like it at the time. But could you imagine if Jim Harbaugh got caught “chopping his wood” (although I like to imagine he calls it “taking one for The Team, The Team, The Team”)? It would be the story of the decade. Anyway, I’ll go back to not caring about Sparty for several months.

It was a good hire, IMO. One of the best realistic hires they could have made. Urban would have been crazy to take that job. After that longshot it was the guys still proving themselves. Oregon State is a tough place to win and he did. I had hin next to the Kansas coach for the best hire they could reasonably make. I didn't think he'd leave his alma mater but get why he did.

He lacks Midwestern connections but I think that's overrated anyway. HS coaches are always open to meeting new guys and he will have a strong connection to West coast talent.

This is a good hire for Staee. And maybe he won’t be a dick as he has no skin in the game. I get the self preservation on Smith’s part but this is a brutal loss for Oregon State. He could have stayed, played a MWC schedule, and hoped for an at-large to the playoff, but I get it. He likely sees Staee as a stepping stone to something better. I guess get paid bigger money to do the same thing you were doing at Oregon State.

I think out of region hires have been proven to be risky. It's not just that the new head coach lacks local and regional connections for recruiting, but most of their staff will too. Sure, they can start to make them, but they are at a disadvantage compared to their rivals with many long standing connections.

Let's see what Smith's new staff looks like, but I'll be surprised if he doesn't bring a lot of his current assistants with him.

Oregon State is a tough place to win and he did.

I think it's a solid hire - possibly the best realistic one they could get - but we may note that Oregon St is his alma mater.  He knew that school and its culture, and was well known in the region due to his playing career.  He's now going to be coaching in a totally different environment in East Lansing.

I feel for him.  I don't think he would have left OrSU if the conference hadn't imploded ... and I don't think he knows what he's getting into now.

Realistically, what are the odds that a very good but somewhat obscure coach who isn’t from the region is able to rebuild a hot-mess program to the degree that it has any meaningful chance of finishing higher than M, OSU, PSU, USC, Oregon, UCLA and Washington? Every year its ceiling will be 7-8th in the conference.

It seems like more MSU people are coming around to the idea that this is, in fact, a very good hire for what they are and where they are right now. They need someone who can at least get them to serviceable, if not good, and Smith did that with Oregon State with much less than what Michigan State potentially can access with good recruiting.

There is no way Urban Meyer would have taken the job. I don't understand how they came to latch onto the name and how they came to forget who they are, unless they wanted to forget that. They probably did.

I think so.  Living in Oregon, I've been rooting for the guy ever since he QB'd an underdog OSU Beaver team to a massive beat down of Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl 20 or so years ago.

There have not been any issues with violence or criminality within the program with him as coach (that I'm aware of) and he's such a calm, even tempered coach that I expect his positive influence will start to repair the culture there if he's given enough time to turn the program around.

Best MSU hire of my not insignificant lifetime.

MSU fans are the ultimate cucks of college football. They were all creaming in their pants at the thought of OSU giving it to Michigan. They are honestly the saddest fan base in college football.

Well, they do wear green hats.

In China “wearing a green hat” (戴绿帽子 or dài lǜ mào zǐ) is an expression that Chinese use when a woman cheats on her husband or boyfriend because the phrase sounds similar to the word for cuckold. This apparently dates back to the Yuan dynasty when the relatives of prostitutes were forced to wear green hats.

They really are beyond pathetic. Every week it's "We are all <insert Michigan opponent> today..." Then if Michigan loses they act all vindicated, like they did it. If your hatred is that unhealthy you probably just shouldn't watch college football, you're going to develop anger issues if you haven't already, due to the amount of time you're going to spend upset. Sad loser program and even more so, fanbase. Yes, every fanbase has pieces of shit who cheer for 19 year-olds to get injured and nutcases who think every uncalled holding or PI, which happens every fucking play in college football, is proof of some conspiracy. They just seem to have a lot more than most. I love how they think Smith coming from another "Little Brother" program means he'll obsessively hate Michigan as much as they do. No, during my time in the Army I met plenty of Oklahoma State and Wazzu fans, they are nothing like MSU fans in terms of inferiority complex, certainly not obsessed with whether fans of their respective "Big Brother" teams went to the school or not. Nope, that really is just you sad sack losers.

"We're a Top 20 destination!" - lol oh yeah, delusional, too. The gaslighting and pretending they knew all along Urban was a pipe dream and oh actually we didn't really want him anyway, after two months of blowing him daily and seriously praying for him to come there, has been hilarious. They knew Michigan was going to have a very successful season while theirs was dogshit, they so desperately wanted Urban so they could have something to lean on to talk shit and issue threats all offseason. They can try now, but they know at the end of the day that while Smith is certainly a solid hire, he's not scaring anyone.

The dynamics between OSU and UofO is nearly identical to MSU/UM.   Right down to OSu/MSU being Ag schools in more rural settings and UofO/UM being much more liberal and in cities.

This isn't really that accurate. One, Eugene is barely more urban than Corvallis. But mainly the dynamic of these two schools isn't close to the undue hatred, the playing the disrespect card, and the long history of all the Big Ten shenanigans, that is found between MSU and Michigan.

Yeah, it's nothing like State fans' hatred. There are more hateful rivalries, but I don't know of another rivalry where fans of the "lesser" program so pathetically blame the other one for everything that's ever happened to them, and think that justifies harassing or assaulting strangers over the team on their shirt. Oh and are so bitter that no one cares about them enough to call them their biggest rival, which of course is also Michigan's fault.

As an Oregonian of forty years with grandkids at both Oregon and Oregon State let me say that both schools have good coaches.  Jon Smith is a fine person.  I hate to see him move to the cess pool of MSU.  And if they make the play offs beware of Oregon.  Nix is a great QB, and they have many fine players.  Coach Lanning is an aggressive offense minded coach.
