Southern Recruiting

Submitted by Mr Stevens on
It almost feels like Michigan is turning into a SEC team. I know that Florida is loaded with talent and I understand what he is doing. But for me, I feel like we are not recruiting in-state enough. We have talent in-state. (Cissko) (Campbell), but we are going to Florida for majority of our recruits. If not Florida, we go to Texas or Ohio. I'm kinda pissed how Rich Rod passed up a lot of great in-state recruits for less rated southern players. Sparty destroyed us in-state. Sure there are these southern speed myths. But they are outrageously stupid. Is there something in the water down there that gets Rich Rod excited?

How long until McFarlin version 2 gets banned? What needs to be published this time? Apparently posting his e-mail and phone number wasn't enough.

I don't think anyone acted on the harassing thing. However, I take pause in automatically saying that this clown is Mcfarlin. This one spells correctly. He must be an upgraded version of Mcfarlin. With that said, the totally idiotic comment that comes out of the ops mouth about recruits in state is the two names he gave as in state recruits being over looked are already in the fold for Michigan. *sighs* Well, at least the Mgo community will have a release valve for their pinned up frustrations.

Sweet blog guys, is this how you treat your new memebers? Calling me a Ass-bag? I'm glad I did something to you. Sorry for posting a comment about your god coach RR. Sorry if I offended any of you guys. But I am not this McFarlin dude. This is outrageous.

If you really aren't McFarlin, then you should still wait to post anything on this blog, because there are certain topics that have been beaten to death and people are sick of them. There is an accepted belief on this blog on certain topics such as this and why we are recruiting so many WR's. Just pay attention and you will learn what to post and what not to post soon enough.

I'm not making an argument. I was stating an observation. It is just funny how you guys treat new members. What the hell did I do to you dude? You act like this McFarlin dude fucked your GF or something. I don't know how McFarlin writes his posts, he isn't a member anymore, (thats what evryone is saying).

Alright - let me critique your comment slightly. Did you look at the number of in-state Michigan recruits RR has landed and compare them to the number that Lloyd landed? Did you look at the number of southern recruits RR has landed as compared to Lloyd? Providing those numbers may help your credibility some. This is the internets. Perhaps more importantly, ask yourself, is there an in-state recruit you wish Michigan landed that sparked this question, or is this a general assertion? And to note, many of Lloyd's best players were out of state. Henne (PA), Hart (NY hollaaaaa), Avant (Chi, IL), Breaston (PA) to name a few. EDIT: My comment still stands as this info should have been in the original post, but I see you added it below. And Lloyd loved southern players (Rivas, Coner, sarcasm meter at 6 of 10.)

Alright Stevens, break down your analysis of us losing the in-state recruiting battle. Go position by position and then compare where our program is vs state. Address the needs of both teams then come to a conclusion rather than just throwing out some blind blanket argument like you just did.

Well sir, State had 11 in-state recruits in 2009 class. Vs 4 for Michigan. Michigan's were mostly 3 stars, (Cameron Gordan), (Teric Jones) and (Thomas Gordan). The only exception would be William Campbell. Some of State's in-state recruits were RB:Edwin Baker, TE:Dion Sims, WR:Donald Spencer, OL:Blake Treadwell, LB:Chris Norman, LB:Jeremy Gainer, and RB:Larry Caper. All solid 4 star recruits. All of State's recruits could of certainly found a job at Michigan. Now I think State's in-state recruits were much better than ours. With the exception of William Campbell that isn't impressing right now due to his out of shape body.

Then why did Michigan offer him? No doubt our running backs are good. But Minor, Grady, and brown will be gone. Minor isn't really a spread offense runner either and he is doing alright. I'm sure Baker could of been as good as Minor if not better.

Michigan wanted Baker. To say that we didn't just isn't true. Caper is the one that RR and the coaching staff probably weren't all that concerned with. Baker and Norman are the only two players from MSU's '09 instate recruits that I personally wish we could've gotten, though.

First, just becasue MSU had more in-state recruits is meaningless. I just don't care. I'd rather have a btter class overall than cater to in-state. I'm not saying ignore in-state, but if you live off of in-state Michigan talent you become....well MSU. Second, let's look at the guys you named: RB:Edwin Baker: This one sucks but I like UM's RB's in last year's class. TE:Dion Sims: He wanted to play TE and UM wanted him at DE. Plus Izzo sold him on playing Basketball, which is a load of crap. WR:Donald Spencer: Late rising recruit and C. Gordon is actually ranked higher. Wouldn't trade Gordon or Stokes for him. OL:Blake Treadwell: His dad is MSU OC. He wasn't coming here. LB:Chris Norman: not going to lie this one sucks. But in RR's defense, MSU got the jump on him during the transition and he committed to MSU early. LB:Jeremy Gainer: This guys' best offer was Indiana before he decommited to go to MSU. RB:Larry Caper: doesn't fit the offense and the UM offer was from Carr, not RR

Norman's commitment came before we lost Hill and 'Spoon. We also didn't have a need at LB until Hill and Witherspoon dropped out of last year's class. In retrospect, we wanted Norman, but he committed somewhere else because he didn't want to come in right behind a class of 4 4-star linebackers.

Why are Gainer, Sims, supposedly better than Jones and Cameron? Both are three stars. Did MSU get a potential good recruit in Normam that UM wanted? Perhaps. But do not go overboard on the RB recruits mentioned by you. That might end up being good players, but who is to say at this point better than UMs. Plus, your list also neglects to mention the other three star and two star recruits from MSU. And why bag on Campbell..he is working into college football shape and he has not even reached his first fall practice. But you have already doomed him to failure. Get a life. So..go a little deeper in your analysis.

I'm pretty sure we're recruiting in state better than Michigan State. We got Devin Gardner, Ricardo Miller, and Jeremy Jackson. We are on the short list for William G., Dior Mathis, and Austin White. Plus, if Michigan turns into an SEC team because of southern players, I'll be happy. They have just won the National Championship three straight years.

Mr Stevens

May 10th, 2009 at 12:11 PM ^

I was mostly talking about 2009 class. Miller is from Florida. Gardner is really the only good in-state player so far. Jackson is a bit of a mystery but I will give you that one, because he did get an offer from Florida and Nebraska.

I thought we were done with this shit. Our recruiting class as a whole crushed sparty. We got 3, count 'em, players that were the best in their state (Campbell, Roh and Turner). you can't do that if you only recruit michigan. The argument has no teeth and just sounds likes stupid whining.

Mr Stevens

May 10th, 2009 at 12:22 PM ^

Overall we did have a better class. I just find it stupid how Rich Rod let some great in-state recruits go. Hell, they let the best in-state receiver James Jackson go to OSU. What Michigan player goes to OSU?

lhglrkwg

May 10th, 2009 at 12:32 PM ^

you are dumb if you think richrod 'let them go'. they probably wanted to go to state more than they wanted to go to michigan. same goes for james jackson. i mean those players werent begging to go to michigan only to have RR say 'well boys we're only recruiting florida texas and ohio now. best of luck to you!'...sorry i cant get over how dumb an idea is that he let them go. thats not how it works. at all.

mblood7

May 10th, 2009 at 12:54 PM ^

For argument sake look at Nick Saban at Alabama. No in-state highly rated player leaves the state. I agree 'let them go' is a shitty way of putting it, but RR wanted these in-state kids (baker, caper, ect.) and didn't do enough to get them in a Michigan jersey. IMO state should be getting Michigan's sloppy seconds. The girls i took for a 'ride' last week and was less than thrilled about should make up their roster.

lhglrkwg

May 10th, 2009 at 1:23 PM ^

whether he tried enough or not, we're basically talking about a small handfull of guys in richrods first full recruiting year that he didnt land. its cool if we get instate guys, but if richrod can win with the guys he brings in then they can all be from alaska for all i care

mblood7

May 11th, 2009 at 12:19 AM ^

First of all sorry bluetell i didn't mean to make my statement a reply to yours. Second I agree if Michigan wins I don't care where they come from Alaska, Iceland, or Kazakastan doesn't matter but there is a certain prestige, or IDK 'oomph' to doing that with kids from Michigan, I realize Michigan (state not team) doesn't have enough D-1 talent and we have to go out of state to uphold the tradition. I agree usually out of state talent is better but when players come up as the caliber players Norman and Baker are Michigan needs to get those players. State is not at the same level as Michigan. Now in 2010 we're losing kids like Gholston, Bullough, Gray, Bolden, Boisture, and White (4 of whom are probably going to state). We got Delio, Drake, and Kinard IMO I'd much rather have Gray, White, and Bullough, I'm not going to put Gholston in there because I'd rather get him over almost anybody. Edit: Don't get me wrong I'm not saying I'm unhappy with the players RR is recruiting, but tell me your not a little biased towards players like Gardner Jackson Mathis and if you want to count Miller.

Gholston, Bullough, Gray, Bolden, Boisture, and White Boisture and Gray are committed out of state. And Bolden is a pro-style QB and Gray didn't even have an offer. Bullough is an MSU/ND legacy, he wasn't coming to UM. White is actually more interested in UM or out of state than MSU. My money is on Gholston leaving the state as well. He's getting too many offers for him to stick around MSU. And Bolden, I don't care about because UM already got the QB from Mich they wanted. So of the names you listed the only MSU "lean" that gives me heartache is Gholston. And as each day goes by I think it's less of a chance he goes to MSU.

I may be mistaken, but I think I read that your argument is based primarily on the recruiting for the 2009 class, while the 2010 class, you're pretty happy with so far. So the big problem is with the class that was built entirely by new Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez with only a 3-9 record to work off of, with no previous work done by Lloyd Carr, who had numerous in-state recruiting inroads and connections. And suddenly we're surprised when in-state recruiting turns briefly, and only by a metric of numbers, rather than fit or desire, in MSU's way? I dunno if Stevens is McFarlin or not, but it's the same sort of argument that doesn't make sense. Rodriguez recruited one player from Michigan to WVU in his entire tenure there, 3-star safety Derek Knight. One player. Doesn't exactly sound like RR had roots planted in MI does it, whereas Dantonio has been intside the Midwest for ages. Perhaps RR is getting southern recruits because that's where he has recruited in the past, and made some connections? There's little logic to your argument, and if you are McFarlin, I'm wasting my breath, but your sample size is too small, not only because 2009 is just one year, but also because it was the first year that was made up of all RR recruits (outside of Carr junior recruits, but RR was also responsible for keeping them on board during and after a dreadful season). So, sample size? Variables? My BA is history and I know these things.

Idk why you care where RR gets his recruits from, but you're crazy. RR can go recruit in Iceland for all I care. I just want him to get the players he wants and needs.

Somehow, I think when Michigan starts rattling off 10-12 wins a season, not many folks will give a flying fuck through a donut hole where they came from. Also, seems we've had a number of stellar players over the years from Ohio, but I don't hear too much whining about that (yeah, for obvious reasons, but still). GO BLUE!!
