Sometimes a 3 star is just a 3 star

Submitted by Farnn on

Has anyone considered that these guys Harbaugh is offering may just be what they appear to be?  Somewhat limited athletes who are smart and hard working?  Every team needs the guys who let the playmakers "make plays".  The ones who take on blocks, keep contain, and make sure tackles.  A reccurent theme at these camps has been how underrated the trait of being a good follower is and maybe these guys those guys who will work hard and take to the coaching and be dependable on the field.  The Ryan Van Bergens, Desmond Morgans, and Jordan Kovacs who are limited athletically but are vital to a team.

Yes, the team still needs those stars, but fortunately there is space left in the class and they tend to take less time to develop and see the field if you don't get them in this class.  So maybethe guy who has built 2 NCAA teams into 11 game winners knows what parts you need and certain ones are easier to get when you are just starting out.

Sometimes a douche is a douche, sometimes a cat is just a cat, sometimes I'm drunk and that time is now. Good day sir.

Can we really win the national championship with guys who aren't being recruited by any big schools? There's a reason why CMU Ball State etc aren't on the same level as the big ten and it has nothing to do with coaching. Even though Dantonio went for 2 star recruits he always went for the guys we recruited and lost. The guys with Alabama Ohio State USC offers are better than guys with just Georgia State and South Alabama offers. I'm sorry but it's true. People love underdog stories but Saban Meyer etc. don't go after 2 stars and they've won 7 combined titles.

that jh doesn't need to depend on a recruiting service's star system. It seems, based on his past recruiting classes, he is quite capable of evaluating football talent on his own.

The guys that we are getting seem solid.  Good, solid players are good for depth.  With some hope, luck and an eye for hidden gems you might get more than just depth.  By getting some of these guys it's not like a 5* kid is going to feel the need to back off.  That's fine too.  There are underdogs out there.  Michigan is now the underdog.  Damn it's gonna feel good to take a bite out of those that assume superiority.

Yes there are lower recruited guys in the nfl. That tends to happen when you have like 5 times as many of them than the 4 or 5 star guys who make it there at a much higher percentage than the 2 or 3 star recruit. Care to show us how Alabama Florida State or Ohio State's roster break down being the last three NC winners.

I will take the hard working 2 and 3 star players who have chips on their shoulders over the more talented 5 stars who never reach their potential.  Amazingly for much of the last decade and in spite of results and star rankings, Michigan has played without passion, intensity and hunger.  How can someone not know what Harbaugh is about, know what this program's become, and let the guy do his damn job?

No I'm the guy who says we won't be good without getting the guys recruited by Saban LSU or Urban that we got the last few years. No team has EVER won a national championship without one top ten class and the playoffs this year consisted of Ohio State Alabama FSU and Oregon which all recruit extremely well. The top teams that don't recruit well are TCU Baylor and MSU who have only won a couple of conference titles.

Isn't it way too early to criticize? Wait for the class to get filled then start evaluating. There are still plenty of top rated guys who haven't committed that M is in on. Maybe he's building momentum or maybe it's strategic to build relationships and get some solid recruits if not 4/5* yet. Either way, relax!

Come tell me a 3* is just a 3* in November then Ill buy what your selling. Until then these rankings are so fluid that your point is lost upon me. One look at generic 3* Xavier Kellys recruitment blowing up after his Michigan offer shows how false your premise is. Kingston Davis offer sheet is another  example.
