Snap Count Depth Chart - Rutgers

Submitted by trueblueintexas on September 27th, 2021 at 1:55 PM

It was a much shorter depth chart this week (thank you? probably not thank you!)

As an FYI - the way I do this is to use MGoBlue Player Participation to determine who played, at what position, and who started. Once that is set, I add in the snap counts from PFFF.

A couple of notes about PFFF this week.

  • They didn't have a count for Aiden Hutchinson. Based on the other snap counts, I'm guessing Aiden was in for @ 60 snaps.
  • They didn't credit Roman Wilson with any snaps. He had the long reception so we know that is wrong. I saw him tryin to block on a few other plays so I'm guessing he was in for about 10 - 12 snaps.
  • The secondary got a good workout.

Here's the chart:

As for Freshman, no need for a chart.

Donovan Edwards and Junior Colson played in their fourth games. Edwards lined up as a receiver and did not see time in the backfield.

No other freshman played.

99 total snaps for TE vs. approximately 120 total snaps for WR's on 55 total plays.

Here are the TE reception totals through 4 games:

  • Erick All: 6
  • Luke Schoonmaker: 0
  • Joel Honigford: 0
  • Carter Selzer: 0

Giving up a third wide out to run two TE sets when only one of the TE's is an actual receiving option (I couldn't even type "threat") is an interesting way to run an offense.

If all of the TE's are also receiving threats, than I think running a bunch of 2 TE sets could put significant strain on the defense regarding how to play each down. If only one of the TE's is an actual receiving option, I think it makes it much easier for the defense to sell out against the run and still protect against the pass.

This is what I, as well as many fans, are completely confused about. In theory, what you see on the field seems like an excellent idea. The implementation of it makes no sense.

I think All and Schoonmaker are decent, not great receivers. Michigan hasn’t asked Cade to really throw enough to see what his preferences are, but I wish Cade would check down to RBs and TEs more when there’s nothing there. There’s nothing wrong with the Brady at Pats type of dink and dunk offense as long as it keeps the ball moving.

Referencing the Pats & Brady having a dink and dunk system while not pointing out the role the tightend(s) played in that system gets straight to my point. The Pats/Brady ran a system built on one of the best tightends in NFL history. Gronkowski has averaged 4 catches for 64 yards per game over his career. Erick All is averaging 1.5 catches per game this year with no other tight ends contributing in the receiving game.

If the TE's are not going to be part of the passing game, simply having them out there to block doesn't really help open anything up. They simply provide a key to the defense that it will be a run and most likely where the run is going.

I agree with you. I don’t think Michigan is designed to run the spread so they’re never gonna go 5WRs out there. So they need to start throwing to their TEs and trust they’re gonna catch it. All of the TEs they’ve recruited have been good pass catchers in high school and they need that opportunity outside of just All

Because that tips your hand that it’s likely going to be a run play. Having a good blocking TE is really tough on defenses because 1) they have to get past the TE, 2) they still have to account for the TE as a receiving threat. I agree that Michigan should pass more. But that can also include moderate level passes to your TE.

44 for Schoonmaker and 33 for All is a surprise, and maybe not a welcome one. All seems to have the most talent and upside at TE, especially receiving. The UFR will tell about blocking but All has been good so far.

The juggling of snap counts of NTs - LBs - NB/S is making my head spin for all of our different packages. Hopefully OCs are confused? I still don't know we've seen how we survive snaps with 5DL vs consistent spread concepts

So what’s the scoop with Barrett?

has he been passed by all of the youngsters?  I know this new D was not supposed to be ideally suited for his skill sets but it seems surprising he has dropped out of the picture.

Special teams?

It can’t be easy to go from starting to not playing at all.
