Snap Count Depth Chart - Rutgers
It was a much shorter depth chart this week (thank you? probably not thank you!)
As an FYI - the way I do this is to use MGoBlue Player Participation to determine who played, at what position, and who started. Once that is set, I add in the snap counts from PFFF.
A couple of notes about PFFF this week.
- They didn't have a count for Aiden Hutchinson. Based on the other snap counts, I'm guessing Aiden was in for @ 60 snaps.
- They didn't credit Roman Wilson with any snaps. He had the long reception so we know that is wrong. I saw him tryin to block on a few other plays so I'm guessing he was in for about 10 - 12 snaps.
- The secondary got a good workout.
Here's the chart:
As for Freshman, no need for a chart.
Donovan Edwards and Junior Colson played in their fourth games. Edwards lined up as a receiver and did not see time in the backfield.
No other freshman played.

22 snaps for Honigford seems ridiculous but JMO
September 27th, 2021 at 2:37 PM ^
99 total snaps for TE vs. approximately 120 total snaps for WR's on 55 total plays.
Here are the TE reception totals through 4 games:
- Erick All: 6
- Luke Schoonmaker: 0
- Joel Honigford: 0
- Carter Selzer: 0
Giving up a third wide out to run two TE sets when only one of the TE's is an actual receiving option (I couldn't even type "threat") is an interesting way to run an offense.
September 27th, 2021 at 2:48 PM ^
Many times TEs are there to block though.
September 27th, 2021 at 2:57 PM ^
If all of the TE's are also receiving threats, than I think running a bunch of 2 TE sets could put significant strain on the defense regarding how to play each down. If only one of the TE's is an actual receiving option, I think it makes it much easier for the defense to sell out against the run and still protect against the pass.
This is what I, as well as many fans, are completely confused about. In theory, what you see on the field seems like an excellent idea. The implementation of it makes no sense.

I think All and Schoonmaker are decent, not great receivers. Michigan hasn’t asked Cade to really throw enough to see what his preferences are, but I wish Cade would check down to RBs and TEs more when there’s nothing there. There’s nothing wrong with the Brady at Pats type of dink and dunk offense as long as it keeps the ball moving.
September 27th, 2021 at 4:46 PM ^
Referencing the Pats & Brady having a dink and dunk system while not pointing out the role the tightend(s) played in that system gets straight to my point. The Pats/Brady ran a system built on one of the best tightends in NFL history. Gronkowski has averaged 4 catches for 64 yards per game over his career. Erick All is averaging 1.5 catches per game this year with no other tight ends contributing in the receiving game.
If the TE's are not going to be part of the passing game, simply having them out there to block doesn't really help open anything up. They simply provide a key to the defense that it will be a run and most likely where the run is going.

I agree with you. I don’t think Michigan is designed to run the spread so they’re never gonna go 5WRs out there. So they need to start throwing to their TEs and trust they’re gonna catch it. All of the TEs they’ve recruited have been good pass catchers in high school and they need that opportunity outside of just All

I think that you totally missed the 10 to 15 years pre gronk.
There were a lot of Ben Watson and Corey Dillon or Ben Jarvis Green Ellis 11 or 12 personnel years in there..
September 27th, 2021 at 7:02 PM ^
Marc Edwards at fullback.
September 27th, 2021 at 3:29 PM ^
Then why not just bring in a 6th or 7th OL who is better at blocking?
September 27th, 2021 at 3:48 PM ^
Because that tips your hand that it’s likely going to be a run play. Having a good blocking TE is really tough on defenses because 1) they have to get past the TE, 2) they still have to account for the TE as a receiving threat. I agree that Michigan should pass more. But that can also include moderate level passes to your TE.
September 27th, 2021 at 3:52 PM ^
But we don't have moderate level passes to TEs outside of All. We are just trotting an inferior blocker out there.

Honingford is essentially a 6th lineman…not that NFL teams don’t have one of there 3 tight ends for this purpose. That being said, I don’t want to see another ball thrown his way unless he’s embarrassingly open.
September 27th, 2021 at 2:49 PM ^
That's a lot of 2 TE sets. They must not trust Henning enough in the slot.
September 27th, 2021 at 3:06 PM ^
This coaching staff doesn't seem to trust anyone right now.
September 27th, 2021 at 5:28 PM ^
And this is how you know it’s Harbaugh’s playbook Gattis is calling plays from.
September 27th, 2021 at 7:16 PM ^
Honigford must be a helluva practice player -- perhaps Harbaugh's "practice favorite" this year.
He can't really catch, and he's not as effective a blocker since he lost a bunch of weight. There's no reason for him to be out there that much at TE, so he must be really bringing it in practice.
September 28th, 2021 at 11:05 AM ^
Its obvious to me that Harbaugh is prepping for OSU and is why Honigford is getting so much time. He wants to go power. Expect him to catch a few balls in the big game.
September 27th, 2021 at 2:32 PM ^
They had Wilson at 5 snaps (did he come back in after the horse-collar tackle?)
They had Hutchinson at 67 snaps.
September 27th, 2021 at 3:34 PM ^
Yeah I don't recall seeing Wilson in the 2nd half at least. I remember thinking that. He often comes in motion so is noticeable even if not getting targets. Haven't heard a peep about it though.
September 27th, 2021 at 2:36 PM ^
44 for Schoonmaker and 33 for All is a surprise, and maybe not a welcome one. All seems to have the most talent and upside at TE, especially receiving. The UFR will tell about blocking but All has been good so far.
September 27th, 2021 at 3:01 PM ^
Hot take from watching every offensive snap but Schoonmaker was brutal at blocking.
September 27th, 2021 at 3:53 PM ^
*I don't have the answers* - But I do not like the snap distribution on offense.
September 27th, 2021 at 5:01 PM ^
The juggling of snap counts of NTs - LBs - NB/S is making my head spin for all of our different packages. Hopefully OCs are confused? I still don't know we've seen how we survive snaps with 5DL vs consistent spread concepts

So what’s the scoop with Barrett?
has he been passed by all of the youngsters? I know this new D was not supposed to be ideally suited for his skill sets but it seems surprising he has dropped out of the picture.
Special teams?
It can’t be easy to go from starting to not playing at all.
September 27th, 2021 at 9:21 PM ^
It's weird. He seemed like one of the lone decently bright spots last year. One thing for Hill-Green to be a film watching machine and pass him but I'm surprised he basically can't get on the field at all with Colson and Mullins ahead of him. Starter to 5th LB.

Our young linebackers are really good but still a bit mistake prone.
September 28th, 2021 at 9:04 AM ^
I noticed Speight got early run in first half, i think he has passed Welschof. Welschof isn't looking like he's gonna pan out.
September 28th, 2021 at 3:09 PM ^
Why such a lopsided snap count for the RBs? Did Haskins get dinged and I missed it?
