Not sure why this is not a bigger deal than over streaching.*stretching It won't be until if and when a lawsuit is filed for negligence.
...it sounds like this kid doesn't think he will play again, or at least, for a while.
I am sure a lawsuit is on its way.
Yep. The only surprising thing to me is that there haven't been five or six suits filed already. You know there are hordes of personal injury lawyers clamoring to take a shot at a six-or seven-figure suit against a huge state institution.
How Kirk Ferentz still managed to recruit some fairly high-profile guys is beyond me.
"I don't know," Lowe said. "I would like to be able to sit out a year, regain my strength, feel fine and play again. But I don't know. I am still down 20 pounds and I am having headaches every few days."
Iowa has announced that all 13 players have been cleared to participate this spring. But the senior back said, "Only a few players are back to full speed that I know of. Some said this wasn't a big deal. But this was a big deal to me.
"I can confirm that William Lowe has requested permission to talk with other schools," Gary Barta, Iowa's athletic director, said in a statement. "While we've honored that request, our interest is for him to remain a Hawkeye."
Read Barta's statement as "...our interest is for him to remain a Hawkeye on a medical scholarship so he can have his Sr year paid for so he has less motivation to sue us"
and I can tell you that it takes a long time to come back. Mine was brought about by another medical condition but it took me a good year to get back to being in somewhat decent shape. You are in pain for a long time and working out is much more painful. I always thought it was a bunch of BS when they said the players would be ready to go soon. Next season will be rough on them and I imagine they will be more injury prone. I can honestly say that I hope I never go through that again.
Forgive you if already posted. I'm too lazy to check though.
...to read that all 13 players affected, including Mr. Lowe, have been cleared to participate this spring. I can just hear Coack Kirk right now, "Ladies, I am sorry that our overly-strenuous workouts hospitalized a few of you weaklings; it certainly wasn't our intention. That said, get your sorry asses out to the practice field for spring drills! NOW!"
Unbelievable.
Also, he's a senior that has not yet cracked the two deep. Not trying to take anything away from his illness, because it is very serious. Just something to keep in mind.
I'm amazed this didn't bring their program to it's knees. Players and parents should have ran away in droves like Taco Bell customers after an e-coli scare. Not only did they overwork them but then upon hearing the news Ferents didn't even return to campus to at least make believe he cared about his players. He stayed out recruiting.
