SIAP - Big Ten Finishes 1st in Tourney Money

Saw an interesting article this morning on ESPN that lays out what the conference pay-outs will look like based on # of teams in the NCAA tournament and how those teams performed. The Big Ten was top dog this year (there are no more payouts after the Elite Eight). Here's the breakdown per the article:

Big Ten - $35.5 million

ACC - $33.8 million

SEC - $32.1 million

Big 12 - $22 million

Pac 12 - $11.8 million (wah wah, Pac 12 lol)

Interesting to note that the Ohio Valley Conference will be very thankful for Belmont and Murray State's victories, as that conference is in line to get a cool $6.7 million after never receiving more than $4 million in the conference's history.

Here's the entire article for anyone interested: http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/26413547/big-ten-1st-tourney-money-sec-sets-own-high

Couldn’t care less. I do not understand Conference pride and rooting interests. If anything, teams in our conference doing well hurts us in recruiting.

Not unlike HS football players looking only at SEC schools because of perceived higher competition, I believe the ACC has been a frequent destination for McDonald's All-Americans for the same reason.  Having a Big 10 that would seem on par with with the ACC, or better, can only lift programs like Michigan on the recruiting scene, where we've been able to become an elite program while rarely hitting on top 50 talent, yet alone top 10.

How cute - you think high-falutin' 'croots are flocking to the SEC and ACC because of perceived competition.  In the case of most SEC and ACC big wig schools, the 'cost' of attendance is pretty lucrative.  We can see this on display in the various NCAA bball court cases; in Ole Miss' probation; and in Cam Newton's salary.

I'll bite. When you play and lose (which everyone does) in a good conference, you continue to get the benefit of the doubt (e.g., SEC football). Sort of like how Michigan looked pretty mediocre late yet still managed to hold on to a second seed.

The more money the conference pulls in (and assuming they won't give it to the players because we all gotta keep fucking Tom Izzo happy), the more should be spent on coaching salaries, equipment, etc. that will allow the conference to continue to attract better talent. That will help all teams, including Michigan, and UM looks like a team that is capable of taking advantage of those gains quite well.  So it's a net positive, even if MSU gets a benefit as well.

In certain regards I understand, but this isn’t a zero sum game. You don’t think a lot of recruits passed up opportunities to go to Michigan, OSU, ND, PSU, or wherever because they wanted to play in the SEC? Alabama did all the legwork, but they elevated the status of everyone else in the conference because they can say “come play in the SEC, the (supposed) best conference in America.

Granted, I never want MSU or OSU to win anything big, as that doesn’t really help us much. And the scheudenfreude would be unbearable. But if Wisconsin had beaten Duke a few years back in the title game, or if Maryland managed to go all the way, that wouldn’t bother me. I’d root for them.

Good.

Absolute joke how much they were riding the ACC. Without a miracle, two B1G teams are in the FF in a year where the ACC got three 1 seeds.

It seems like half of the ESPN analysts had Duke vs UNC in the national title game and neither are there. UNC was a joke of a 1 seed

That Sparty had the good fortune of playing Minnesota again seems to have been forgotten by most.  I'm not saying Wofford would've given MSU a better game, but any of the other 7/10 matchups would have been tougher than their guaranteed rematch against Minnesota or Louisville.

NCAA needs to make sure there can be no conference matchups before the Elite Eight unless a conference puts 9+ teams in the tournament.
