SI's final preseason top 25 - UM #6

Submitted by MikeCohodes on

SI released their final preseason top 25 today.  Indiana took home the #1, we're the next in the Big Ten at #6.  Other conference teams are OSU #7, MSU #13, Wisconsin #22.

Link to the top 25

In the Michigan-specific breakdown (LINK) they feel that we should reach the 2nd weekend of March Madness at the least this season, and they highlight all the great things we've been seeing through the first 2 exhibition games, such as Spike being a competent floor general and Nik hitting the 3, as well as McGary and GRIII teaming up to be an awesome combination.

I so can't wait until 2013 when the conference season starts, there's going to be some great matchups this year!

How amazing is it that I'm bummed that we're only ranked 6th in the pre-season poll?  We have come a long way in a fairly short period of time thanks to coach B.  And nobody fears the great Tom Izzo around here anymore too - both on the recruiting trail and on the court.

Indiana is getting the group-think treatment where everyone votes them #1 because that's how everyone else is voting them. Reminds me of USC this season or Georgia/LSU in recent years. A few people get all worked up about their potential, look over their flaws, and everyone jumps on the bandwagon

Or Florida State now every year it seems.

Amen to that - I sure wouldnt trade our roster for theirs and sure as hell wouldnt trade our coach for theirs.  I like our chances a lot better than Indiana in both the B1G as well as the tourny - we are deep and we have the ability to go big, go small or all points in between.

All hail King Beilein!

Am I the only one that is somewhat skeptical of Indiana's #1 ranking? That may be because, in general, I am skeptical of Zeller being the as good as everyone is claiming he is. He's obviously very good, but do you really think he is as good as everyone is hyping him up to be?

is the kind of player who won't wow you but is very efficient.  He plays good defense, is smart, and has good post moves.  He's the kind of player that you don't realize is having an excellent game and you would be surprised on reading the box score that he scored 17-20 pts with 10 plus rebounds.

So who should be #1? College bball is completely different than it was 7-10 years ago. The game used to be dominated by veteran teams who would stay together 3-4 years. Now, the premier teams are made up of talented freshman and sophomores. The fact that UM has talent like Burke, Hardaway and Morgan returning with hyped Frosh like GR3, McGary and Stauskas is somewhat unusual nowadays. We are going to be very, very good this year barring any significant injuries. Gone are the days of Laettner, Hurley and the Davis boys playing together for 4 years. It is so much easier to build a powerhouse in Bball than it is Football. There are only 5 guys on the court at one time.
