Several futurecasts for TE Colston Loveland to Michigan

Submitted by Gentleman Squirrels on June 28th, 2021 at 12:03 PM

For those who don't know, futurecast is Rivals version of crystal ball. Over the weekend 4 futurecasts (including EJ Holland and Mike Farrell) came in for TE Colston Loveland to Michigan. He's a 6'5 230lb TE out of Idaho and has recently blown up with offers from Bama, Auburn, LSU, and Michigan. Currently he's ranked as a 3* on the composite but 247 has him as 4* and their #13 TE.

Loveland took his official to Michigan over the weekend and if the futurecasts are any indication, it seems to have gone really well.

This would be a great pickup. Recently jumped from a 87 to a 90 on 247sports and still seems to be rising. It would be nice to finally get one of our top TE targets after striking out on guys like Thomas Fidone and Theo Johnson. I assume this means no Oscar Delp but he’s seemed Georgia bound for a while.

This young man has picked up 'Bama, LSU, and Auburn offers in the last 3 months and must have proven too good in-person to slow-play while waiting for Delp.  Sounds like good news is coming.

Misc. FYI - The other "no-name, 3-star" Michigan OL target that I mentioned in the Lorenzetti thread - Ashton Craig - just chose ND over OSU, Iowa, and M so we don't have to worry about his starzz rating.

Looks like a good pickup. Optimistically maybe they still are in on Delp and like Marlin Klein's potential at WR more than TE. Inversely, and off-topic in regards to Loveland, EJ Holland moved his forecasts away from Michigan for DT Jordan Phillips and LB Micah Pollard to Tennessee and Auburn respectively.

Holland also changed from Michigan to Stanford for Lucas Heyer. The 247 guys mentioned on their podcast that Heyer isn't happening as well. On 247, balls were put in for Anto Saka to Northwestern and for Ja'Kobi Albert to Kentucky. The Saka one seems fine as long as Eugenio goes our way as expected after Kevonte Henry already committed at the EDGE spot. Albert would be a nice pull but he seemed likely to stay south. Dillon Tatum and D'Arco Perkins-McAllister would be a good haul at safety and we control the balls for both.

I think Phillips trending away sucks because he seems like a beast at the DT spot. Pollard seems odd since he seemed perfect for the OLB spot and there's a Michigan connection, but Michigan seems to have done a good job in putting themselves in a good spot for several OLB players. I think Perkins-McAllister would be great at safety, but I'm questioning if Tatum will end up in this class since he seems to be constantly pushing his decision back. The staff seems to also be targeting Austin Brown at safety and I wouldn't be surprised if he joins the class.

Agreed I love Phillips and would prefer him over some other options in this class. We've been on Pollard so long that it is strange to see him trend elsewhere but I like Eugenio and Henry for that EDGE spot. I am not sure if the staff changeover is the only reason, but the changing recruiting board over the last year has definitely impacted the quality of this class. With Pollard, I suspect he was someone Helow knew of very early and so he was given high priority, but as we did more scouting, we found more targets that we liked equally or more.

Tatum has been a bit of an enigma. Sam still seemed optimistic as of last mention on his podcast, but it seems like patience is wearing thin. Brown seems intriguing, and the competition doesn't look tough, though I am unclear on his fit, as the scouting points to more viper than safety.

A 10.9 100 meters equates to a 4.49 roughly, so that would be good for a true safety. His 247 profile lists a time of 11.2 which is more like a 4.6 (40th percentile for a safety). For reference, Khaleke Hudson ran a 4.56.

The staff gets a little more clarity on this, so I feel the speed has to be legit for them to pursue.

Apologies. The great formatting here crossed my wires a bit as I was referring to Austin Brown's 100m time.

The 40 equivalent time does apply so a 4.49ish from Klein is awesome. The hype has been quiet for him but someone that big and fast can absolutely find a spot to play here.

In other classes that might be true but a lot of these 3 star guys that we are targeting/committed have been going to camps and in person workouts and getting offers from big time programs. If you want to trust 247 rankings over big time programs evaluating these kids that haven’t been able to go to camps for the last year then go ahead but a lot of these kids are ranked wrong

So then you agree that rankings don’t matter when players are going out and playing well at camps and getting offers from big time programs.

A ranking is just an arbitrary number some guys who sit behind a computer for a living put next to a kid’s name. Instead of actually evaluating these kids, those guys will see Bama, LSU, Auburn and Michigan throw an offer out and all of a sudden the kid gets a ratings bump.

Or Lorenzetti commits to Michigan and goes from unranked in the composite to just outside 700, because a recruiting site miraculously found out the kid exists and slapped a grade on him without evaluating.

So yeah, forgive us if we trust the evaluations of the coaches of Michigan and other top programs over the recruiting sites.

He appears to be a high quality guy and it would be great for him to spend 4 years in Ann Arbor. It will be an eye opener compared to Gooding.

As far as highly rated Idaho recruits, there aren't very many, partly due to little active recruiting happening here.

The state does have talent - consider Taysom Hill, Shea McClellin, Leighton Vander Esch, and Matt Paradis recently.

Of course one of my favorites was Wayne Walker from years ago.

In the entire history of Michigan football, five players have hailed from Idaho, two of them from 1901 or before.

I remember a similar TE recruit from a rural community in southwest Kansas. Tuman grew up near Liberal, KS and was one of our best TE! I hope Colston chooses Michigan!

If the rankings really are some sort of Covid-induced lottery of randomness then one would expect that Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia and the other recruiting big dogs are signing an "outlier" number of 3* kids. Well, I mean, if you assume that those schools actually evaluate players and try to bring in the most talented kids possible.

And, to be clear, the ranking is assessed at the time of signing, not after some bump or something. I'm not exactly seeing that. In fact, it's just more of the same from those schools. That suggests to me that, as always, it's better, in the aggregate, to have 4/5-star kids than 3-star kids. I'm sure that Boston College fans are talking about what a great job Hafley is doing finding 3* diamonds in the rough. And, hell, Rutgers fan(s) as well. YMMV, but I'm not buying into the massive rankings devaluation theory.

As for Loveland -- he can play. I'm very happy with this particular development.
