Semi OT Tour De France
Today I found out that one of the riders in the Tour is a U of M grad. Michael Woods was a track and cross country athlete who suffered from stress fractures so stopped running (still graduated in 2008) is riding in the Tour De France. Today he is up near the leaders!
Go Blue!
And he goes into the lead in the King of the Mountain! (on the course)
And promptly crashed on the decent.
going to be tough to keep the lead with a cat 2 left and hurting from that crash
Stay away from crazy women holding up cardboard signs!
What if the crazy woman just needs a ride into town?
10.1.1Be careful. She might be packing a pistol
Nothing compared to what I'm packing..
Or not.
I would crash into that.
So if he finishes today he will be wearing the Polka Dot Jersey! So anyone know if a Michigan Man has ever worn a leader's jersey in the Tour De France?
Pretty cool that a guy who used to hang around the Diag is wearing the Polka Dotted jersey going into the Pyrenees!
Great long read on Woods... He broke his femur at the start of the pandemic as well...lots of hard luck, but pretty amazing to go from being a world-class runner to now an elite, world class cyclist.
He'll be riding for Canada in the Olympics as well

I don't think he has the overall ability to win the yellow jersey, but being King of the Mountains would be awesome!
Great article thanks for the link.
Considering he is 55 min back it’s safe to say he won’t be winning the yellow this year.
Im hoping he can keep up the strong showings in the mountains over the next couple of days.
So wait is this post not about Walter Nolen and his gloves?
Great ride today from Woods, crash notwithstanding. One of the few times it’s OK to be wearing (some) red. It’ll be interesting to see if he can hold the lead…
No single rider has been dominating the climbs this year, so if he has any gas left in the tank he may be able to hold that jersey for a while. If he gets through tomorrow, Monday is a rest day, which some riders like and some don’t. Then three really tough mountain stages in the Pyrenees. Lots of points remaining for anybody who can step up. Whatever happens, it’s going to be exciting.
