Semi-OT: James Franklin Doesn't Need Talent at Penn State

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

Josh Moyer of ESPN pointed out that James Franklin just tweeted out the following graphic. Probably not the best recruiting tool:

This is what the NFL is all about.  When asked about Hackenburg blaming the coaches at PSU,

Said one evaluator: “Despite the fact that it’s probably true, you don’t want to hear a kid say that.”

Translation: we don't want honesty here in the NFL, if you play for this league, the shield comes first, oh and make sure you have a fall guy to carry your weed for you.

A good thread title would be something like: "James Franklin: No Talent Required at PSU" or something.

Anyway, this is a genius move by Franklin. How better to shift the stain of scandal to the background than by feeding the college football universe a hilarious meme that ruthlessly mocks his own school? I mean, we're going to tweet this 8 million times the week of the Michigan-PSU game, right?

Maybe we should just change PSU's initials to NTR.

I guess he was going for grit over talent? I wonder how much longer Franklin lasts at PSU. He's got 4 years left on his deal so if he doesn't get an extension after this year he will be viewed as a lame duck of sorts.

Coincidently, that's basically what we kinda saw as the scenario for Hoke in 2014. 9-3, losses to the big rivals, listless extension into the next season.

I would love to see that happen at No Talent U and have them extend Franklin. Cause, obvs.

Considering they lose an NFL QB, a lot on defense, their great D coordinator and also have a new OC, I don't think it's likely they get to 9-3.  Franklin might still get extended because of the effects of sanctions still on their roster but he will be in must win territory in 2017 if he does.

Looking at their schedule this year, I'd think he'd be in pretty hot water if they lost to Pitt away and failed to beat UM, MSU, or OSU (the latter two are at home).

Yep, and it's their second game of the season, on the road, breaking in a new QB, a new offensive system, and three new Dline starters.

I want Franklin to stay but I so want them to lose that game just to watch the reaction. How about they lose to Pitt but beat OSU and MSU to save his job....

Pitt's on a whole different level for them, because PSU killed the rivalry game with Pitt, with Paterno essentially claiming that PSU was to good to schedule a regular game on any basis other than 2 home games for every away game.

Losing to Temple was embarassing, losing to Pitt would be a whole different level, particularly given their deeply stupid "unrivaled" slogan.

I get, and kinda respect, the message, the idea that you don't need natural talent to be great, you need to bust your ass and work.  Also the idea that you can take all these steps to be great that don't require any talent.  But...maybe word it a touch better?  Because...yeah...

Actually, working your ass off, going to the gym every day, and pushing yourself absolutely can train yourself to carry 300 lbs.

Don't get me wrong, athleticsm and natural talent goes a long way, but putting in the hours and working to be great goes a long way too.  There are plenty of guys on our roster, in  both basketball and football, who we don't think of as being great natural athletes but through work and effort have become stars.

The implication of this post is a blatant lie.

Being an elite-level athlete is extremely influenced by genetics. No amount of work would have made me a D-I athlete. Maybe D-III. Maybe. The guys on the roster you mention still possess eye-popping athleticism compared to a regular person.

And no, not everyone can carry 300 pounds without a shit ton of bad weight. I'd say less than 5% of people can do that. There's an upper limit of lean muscle mass, even if you do things to your body with illicit substances.

I think I misinterpreted what you meant by carry - I was thinking carrying as in "pickup, lift, and move to another place" carry, as in "I am carrying this box to my new apartment", not carry as in weigh and still be mobile and athletic.  You are 100% right that there's a limit on how much can be done to increase muscle mass and positive weight, based on your height, frame, etc etc.  No amount of effort or training will let me grow 6 inches.

In related news, the just released 2018 247 has 9 players from Pennsylvania including 3 in the top 15.  Hopefully Michigan can start building those relationships so they have a head start on whoever the PSU head coach is in February 2018.

Franklin introducing the new freshman to the team:

"I'd like us to welcome this great group of young men. They fit what we are building here. We're a squad filled with zero talent, but all the heart and grit and effort a team need. So what if these freshman have no talent or skills that are necessary to play football at a high level. We will win in the weight room, the gym, the practice field, and in the classroom. WE ARE......NOT TALENTED!"
