If they don't want Michigan visiting Florida during the Spring (or Winter, as the writer points out), surely the SEC would enthusiastically support shifting many of the Bowl games up north, right?

SEC needs to form AAA NFL league. They already pay the players. There are no acedemic standards. They could claim tax breaks since they could now claim the income instead of the anonymous $10,000 handshakes.

It didn't occur to me yesterday, but why didn't that reporter call BS on Sankey and push him to admit what he's really bitching about? I know the relationship between the SEC and CBS, but come on! That was just another example of the death of journalism. And MSM complains about blogs?!?!?! Ha! Sorry. I'll get off my own lawn now.

As someone who has lived in the south for about two decades, it should come as no surprise but damn, are these people obnoxious. The writer acts as if this is below them and not as classy as the SEC should be. Dear lord...

I live in Knoxville and most of the fans here think the SEC looks stupid for trying to block this.  Of course, the fans here aren't as obnoxious as some of the SEC fans in the deep south.

Author did a nice job cutting right to the root cause of the SEC whimpers.  This "call for justice" for the kids is nothing more than a cry for help by the SEC because JH is kicking all of their asses with regard to promoting thier own institution.

Harbaugh will go to any legal length possible to introduce UM to as many young people as possible whether they play ball or not.....Yes I understand that football players are his focus, but when a whole school full of talented kids (IMG) is exposed to all things UM they might just start thinking Michigan seems like a cool deal if not for themselves, but for their classmate who happens to be a badass baller.  Peer pressure is a powerful thing.

Harbaugh has noticed this and has simply asked: Is the conference that worked so hard to reach the pinnacle of college football willing to work just as hard to stay there?

It's interesting really, as the wagons are definitely turned inwards in that circle which is the Southeastern Conference. They rail against anyone from anywhere else having camps and practices on their street, but they turn around and are perfectly willing to shit on one another in a sometimes ethics-free battle. That actually is a pretty lazy, anti-competitive strategy on the part of the SEC and their effort to maintain a cartel  of sorts over significant portions of the talent pool for Division I. You'd almost swear that the conference was not entirely confident that bagmen and all the extras of SEC recruitment wouldn't be enough against Jim Harbaugh (and others, I am sure) all the time.

living in Pac-12/Big-12 territory people here think what Harbaugh is doing is great. They also love seeing the SEC piss and moan over this. They only wish their coaches had thought of it first and when Harbaugh offered coaches a chance to join him, thought their schools shouldv'e sent coaches to get in on it....

Good article. I haven't seen any media support for the SEC on this issue. ESPN's Brian Bennett also has an article up stating much of the same. At least state the obvious, i.e. that you think this is unfair, as opposed to acting like you are concerned about the well-being of Michigan football players.

Writer desribes how SEC brags about how rough and tough it is to recruit in the SEC, and when Harbaugh wants to play rough

"The SEC's response to Harbaugh is to run and tell the teacher."

Harbugh has "simply asked:  Is the conference that worked so hard to reach the pinnacle of college football willing to work just as hard to stay there?"

Nice article. SEC needs to stop complaining. They need to start figuring out ways to be creative like Harbaugh. He's not breaking any rules. What's the big deal?

with any sense of plausible integrity. In fact, the comments seem laughable and ludicrous at best. The NCAA will not do anything about this before Michigan spring breaks in sunny Florida.

It's almost as if Sankey is seeking to prevent a school from gaining a competitive advantage because its confefrence couldn't figure out a way to invent any better exceptions other than illegal ones, which the conference and its bevy of bagmen will never own up to.

I mean didn't our interim AD casually publicly suggest as much. It's such an opem secret that no one feels threatened about linking the practice specifically to the SEC. I mean Ole Miss is currently facing charges that shed light on the practice. And now the conference commissioner wants institutional relief to protect its own interests from Harbaugh wanting to give every member of his team a Spring Break just like all the other kids get. You couldn't get more practical in offering a way for football athletes who sacrifice many aspects of college life to experience the one thing that is culturally celebrated as a rite of the college experience.

Not only that, but the NCAA has predicated the foundation of most of its regulatory statutes based on the idea that student-athletes shoudn't be given priveleges that other students aren't entitled to.

Spring break is one of those entitlements that everyone else gets that Michgan players will now get a chance to enjoy.

So Harbaugh outfoxed the competition by scheduling  his team's Spring Break practice at a palce where some of the best high school football talent in the South happens to go to school. And even if it's a dead period for recruitning, those players including the nation's No. 1 2017 prospect, who just the other day suggested he was interested in seeking Michigan up close and personal, will get an eyeful opportunity to see how this team practices up close and personal. This is the real threat that this Spring Break poses to the SEC and its member schools.

This is a conference that plays an eight game conference schedule, still plays Division 2 schools at will, never travels anywhere outside its region for any competitive contest, hasn't played a northern or Midwest school wjth a heartbeat above the Mason-Dixon line in decades, except marquee Jerry World matchups with plenty of time to prepare, has regurgitated more players after oversigning while paying off athletes and their families with a Southern bless your heart appeal and mentaility, and is now crying foul about Michigan going to the beach and playing putt-putt during a four-day practice schedule in Bradenton, also during MLB spring training, which, of course, is why Harbaugh actually wanted to go there besides sticking it to the SEC.

Say hey, Willie, Let'em eat cake. We're going swimming in their backyard.

All this posturing/maneuvering reminds me of all the crap associated with the America's Cup races.  Team A innovates.  Team B protests to the committee (usually the host organization).  The committee supports their team.  The other takes it all to court.  Months later, something falls out.

It will be interesting to see of the JH innovations end up in court.  Could it lead to a reorganization of the NCAA?

I say keep pushing the buttons coach!

Posted on another thread, but pertinent here also.

The UM women's softball team has 5 games scheduled in CA during spring break.  Idem for men's baseball.  Even basketball and swimming have matches scheduled for both weekends.

Alabama has men's baseball scheduled during their spring break.  The glass house theory is about to get tested.

So the SEC will have a hard time selling this to the NCAA without throwing a monkey wrench into all college sports.  Supreme Court material, if you want to push it - no discrimination between different sports - men's or women's.
