Season tickets "seat license"?

Submitted by iamottashape on January 19th, 2023 at 8:42 AM

As a season ticket holder for 20+ years, I seem to remember that the "donation"/seat license bill is usually sent out soon after the Ohio game.  I haven't seen anything yet this year.  Is it just me or did I miss the email?  Thanks!  And when will our home schedule get better?  Sheesh

This isn't true. You pay the donation first, always have, and they use that to then "offer" you tickets. I think you can payment plan the whole thing, but they still do the "donation" first to gauge interest -- IE the donation deadline you have to opt into the whole payment plan. If you don't donate, or opt into the payment plan, then they offer your tickets up to the people on the wait list.

Starting in 2021 season tickets and the "donation" were combined into one renewal process. You can pay in full or spread out the payment across a few months. Below is prior to the 2022 season in a release.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan Athletic Department announced Wednesday (Oct. 20) the season ticket timeline and preferred seat contribution plan for the upcoming 2022 football season. To streamline renewal efforts and consolidate communication, Michigan Athletics has made some changes:

  • The football season ticket renewal process will begin in January 2022.
  • Similar to the 2021 season, the Preferred Seat Contribution (PSC) and season ticket will be combined into one renewal process.
  • All season ticket holders may pay in full or elect the flexibility of a payment plan, which will be spread out over four (4) payments.

Yep, when you lump the two together, it lessens the attention on the PSL gouging.  They probably get some bitching about a very well off athletic department squeezing a little more out of what has been a very loyal fan base.  Think about the number of times you've sat in the stadium with something like 80K-90K in the stands when they announce 'the largest crowd to see a football game in the country today'. That's a lot of paid-for and unoccupied seats, yet we return year after year with our money in our fists.  I don't mind the being taken for granted so much, we're steady customers after all, but working to obfuscate their turnip-squeezing is a bit much.

My get-off-my-lawn complaints:

1. Charging top dollar for bottled water and not allowing you to bring your own sealed water. Especially with the boiling-hot early games. A minor thing that pisses me off to no end. The free 4 oz cups of water just don't cut it.

2. The need to take off my hat to search for contraband. I can hide a lot more in other places. I guess it is to make everyone equal in case a Sikh decides to bring in a six-pack in his turban.

3. No wifi (even paid) and not sharing scores frequently in the stadium.

I lay these directly at the feet of Warde who has done exactly zero for the gameday experience since he got here.

And many times the less-than-desired cups of water were not available, at least on the upper entrance level, not to mention the ridiculous concession lines were usually out of control.  Certainly agree with your other problems, bringthewood.

There are still too many first-time attendees (especially women) who get caught with handbags and must check them.  I don't care if they're Buckeye fans, but many are alums and M friends who travel a distance for their first game.

Yeah, I haven't heard anything yet either. Weirdly I logged onto the site this morning and under "ticket renewals" I still don't have "any ticket applications at this time". They're typically due by the end of February. But the timelines have all been different in the past few years, they haven't stuck to anything. Last year I remember being shocked at how early they sent it out after the season. Some years we heard nothing until February/march

They are probably wrestling with how greedy to be on the price increase. On one hand, this should be the best Michigan team in the last 25 years. On the other hand, total garbage home schedule. Tough decision.

They used to be sent out earlier because they could be deducted on tax returns and allowed people to get an early jump on their returns or if they wanted to fold in that cost into the reporting years returns.

Historically, seat donations were ruled as NOT qualifying for a tax deduction because the donor (fans) get something material in return - this was the position of the Internal Revenue Service back in 1984 (or about then), but led by heavy lobbying from lawmakers with big college football followings, in 1988 a law was enacted that made up to 80% of seat donations deductible (S.2238 Technical Corrections Act of 1988). BUT the IRS never gave up defending the principle and so worked on this (The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2018), and ultimately got this repealed in 2018.

There is still a Preferred Seat Contribution (PSC) and generates about $30 million for the Athletic Department but is folded into the overall ticket renewal process. The early mailings / emails no longer matter since it can't be deducted.

Per MGoBlue:

  • January 27: football PSC/season ticket renewals begin
  • February 28: deadline to pay in full or opt into a payment plan. For those who opt into the payment plan, the credit card on file will be automatically charged on the following dates:
    • 1/4 at the time of renewal
    • 1/4 on March 17
    • 1/4 on April 7
    • 1/4 on April 28

Those are rather silly increments of time. Most people spread payments out so they don’t wind up on the same monthly credit card cycle. This guarantees that you will have two payments on one cycle.  You may have the other two payments on the same cycle or split up, depending on your close date.

I just sent a message to a nephew living in northern Minnesota about getting tickets to "our" game in Minneapolis for, at least my grandson and me-nephew is a huge Michigan fan too. It's only 600 miles for us vs 800 miles to AA. (Though we would have free lodging in Northern Indiana.) If anyone has 2-5 tickets for sale to the Rutgers or UNLV games we might be interested.

OT: Am wondering how XM is doing-assuming they are getting blizzarded right now.
