Santa Ono Appreciation Post

Submitted by MS3 on October 29th, 2022 at 10:49 AM

For those of you who are not very active on social media, just wanted to share a few of the recent posts from Santa Ono's Twitter account. It's so refreshing to have such a vibrant personality leading the university, both from an academic and an athletics standpoint! Go Blue!

This guy is incredible! Absolutely love everything that he is about. So many administrators (college, high school or even business executives) try to show just how “into it” they are and show “rah rah” and it comes off as so phony and scripted. This guy seems 100% genuine. His whole vibe and attitude seems almost like an alum or fan who won a contest to be the next president and like “holy crap this is awesome” (only super qualified).

So nice to see a President that understands what athletics mean not just to a community but the school itself. Why have you spent all those hundreds of millions - billions over the years - just to behave as if you wouldn't mind if it all went away?

Embrace it. It helps every aspect of the University. Having an elite athletics program is nothing but a positive. It only helps.

President Ono really seems to, "get," the idea that the University's athletic programs, particularly the football team, serve as a welcoming and figurative, "front porch," for the University that allows it to connect to all walks of society around the globe.

As you said, having an elite, well-run athletics program is nothing but a plus for the University. It is also a huge differentiator for the University versus other state flagship public universities as well as elite private universities such as those found in the Ivy League and the Seven Sisters.

It’s great to see how he’s embracing every facet of the school and Ann Arbor.

Seems like such an obvious thing to do…but so few leaders do it.  Get out every day and spend time with your constituents.

Makes people feel as though you care…and that you’re “in it” with them.

Hope I get a chance to spot him at the game today. Really impressed so far with his whole approach: athletics, academia, research and the wide-ranging connection with the University of Michigan community.

His younger brother is the prominent mathematician Ken Ono.

"Since 2016, [Ken] Ono has been using mathematical analysis and modeling to advise elite competitive swimmers including 2020 Tokyo Olympic medalists Kate Douglass, Cate DeLoof, Paige Madden, Alex Walsh, Emma Weyant and Andrew Wilson."

So I am sure he has more appreciation for athletics than some of his predecessors.
