Ryan Day: Kyle McCord Starts, Brown to get snaps as well

Submitted by Chi-Blue on August 29th, 2023 at 12:57 PM

May the "best" man win! Will be interesting to see how things go. First several games will obviously provide some live bullets, but quite a few OSU insiders now thinking that Brown will be the guy by the time they travel to Notre Dame.

Pretty much what I think most of us expected

If they have OL issues I suspect that Brown may be the guy eventually, as he is way more mobile. If not then McCord might be able to hang onto it

It's got to be a bad sign for McCord that it took this long right? Brown literally couldn't play all spring and it took Day until week 1 to decide that McCord was in fact better.

Brian made a point in 15.0c that this might be OSU's first developmental season at QB since... before Troy Smith? I was born in 1999, I literally do not have a sentient memory of OSU having a below-average QB. I could not be more excited to watch them play ND in a few weeks

2011 wasn’t particularly great for OSU QBs. Freshman Braxton Miller with Joe Bauserman sprinkled in on a 6-7 team. Miller could run but wasn’t very accurate as a passer and never put up big passing numbers (though his rushing improved enough as a sophomore and junior to be considered a good QB)

That's a fair point. McCord has been a 2-year backup...I thought for sure he had the inside track for QB1 and that it would have been obvious by the Spring game. Brown OTOH has been a 0-year backup and is younger. That McCord didn't win this cleanly is a concern. I think McCord can be steady & solid, but Brown certainly has a Cade/JJ-type scenario that could result in him being The Man.

2004 was a QB development year with Zwick underperforming the hype and a SO Troy Smith still raw.

Does FR Pryor (2008) count as developmental season? Or by "developmental season" does Brian mean "dude, you're bad. Nor will we be able to count on you in the future." In that case that would be 2011 Joe Bauserman (with a developing FR Braxton Miller).

Was 2014 FR JT Barrett a developmental season at the position? Was thrown into duty unexpectedly when Brax was out for the season with injury just a couple weeks prior to Week 1.

I am getting a feeling they really don't want it to be McCord.  He has been in the program for 3 years behind Stroud.  You would have thought he would be the clear winner but he hasn't been.  If OSU didn't have Marvin Harrison (he definitely takes pressure off needing an elite QB), I would say OSU is in a predicament that we haven't seen for over a decade.

Hard to say.

Maybe Brown is pretty good and forced them to give him a good look.

Or maybe neither has been very consistent.  Rumblings are McCord didn’t really claim the job.

As good as they have been I don’t see how they don’t take a step back at QB this year.

Stroud might be the most accurate college QB I recall but I’ll take JJs all around athleticism and winner mentality.

And don’t forget OSU chose McCord over JJ. I promise you JJ hasn’t forgotten.

They also announced Josh Simmons (better known around here as the 7th best offensive lineman from Brady Hoke's San Diego State) as their starter at left tackle.

Are there really that many people here who thought Stroud was overrated?  I know I didn't, he had some of the best arm talent I've ever seen.  I just enjoy it much more when they don't have a running QB.

I think it's more Ohio State fans maybe don't realize how good he was.  You don't have to look far, look at how Clemson looked when all of the sudden they didn't have a top 15 pick behind center.

Their talent still carried them to fine records, but nobody took them seriously as a threat for the national title.  It can happen quick, as we all know around here.  Now in the past with someone like Barrett who didn't have the best passing game in the world, his legs would make up for it in their offense with back breaking 1st down runs on 3rd and long.

I agree. Stroud was very, very good and really made them into the best version of themsleves. I think they take a step back this year for multiple reasons with QB being one of the biggest reasons followed by offensive line play.

Not sure I've ever wanted Notre Dame to win more than this year, and in that game. I hope they pass for 400+ yards and score 40+ points. Give those OSU defensive commits something to think about early and then beat them late and watch some of their defensive staff be shown the door!

I've been screaming this since he left and many of their fans think it will be just fine since Fields and Haskins were great. Stroud not only went 2nd overall, he seemed to give them a shot at a completion every time he released the ball. I would bet lots of money that they have a drop off this year whether it is McCord or Brown.

Also, reminder that Stroud never got gold pants 😁😉

This is my take as well. Ohio State is not used to uncertainty in their seasonal game planning. The fact that Ryan Day had to wait until opening game week to announce his starter suggests to me that the competition remains undecided.

Not having a qb as a primary running threat means greater reliance on effective OL play.  So that impinges now on that unit's immediate performance. And there are question marks evident from spring game and the replacement of its starting tackles from a year ago.

The big test will come in South Bend on Sept. 23. I like Notre Dame in that matchup. But by then, Devin Brown could be the Buckeye starter. As of now, however, I agree OSU is in the middle of a qb conundrum that could take weeks to unravel and make or break its season.

The problem seems to be how Day has reshaped the program. OSU has survived with horrible QBs (See: Bauserman, Joe) but their defense and run game were much better. OSU doesn't have the defense and run game to survive a bad QB. Can they still get to 9 or 10 games with a bad QB?Sure, but they aren't gonna win their big games if their QB sucks.

The Notre Dame game coming up is gonna be must watch TV. I actually wouldn't be shocked if ND won by double digits

OSU is so stacked on offense it is just difficult to see them having any big issues. Would love to see them struggle a bit but they always just seem to reload.

Stacked on offense meaning WR's, and to a lesser extent RB's.  They are not stacked at OL/TE and possibly QB. Which indicates not really being "stacked".  They could drop 3-4 games in a worst-case scenario.

What might be happening to Day is what often happens to one-dimensional guru coaches who follow great coaches at great programs (Lincoln Riley is a great example, and a few years ahead of Day in this progression).  What you often see is that they can maintain for a period and appear quite viable.  But slowly they often begin to lose toughness in the trenches, which is the unheralded core of a football team, and the core upon which everything else is built. The mark of a great coach is a coach who consistently fields complete football teams (meaning complete in their competencies, not complete in their recruiting).  I think this is starting to slip with Day, primarily in the trenches, and spilling over onto the Defense as a whole.

The OSU QB situation has become THE CURSE OF JOE BURROW.

1. Ohio native Joe Burrow transfers after being benched at OSU for Dwayne Haskins

-wins Heisman at LSU

-wins National Championship at LSU

-#1 pick in draft

-Turns Cincinnati Bengals into contenders

2. Meyer Leaves OSU for NFL

-reportedly had called burrow a "D2 QB" and said "He throws like a girl"

-Meyer run out of NFL immediately

-Meyer caught on video awkwardly grinding chick at bar and hazing NFL players

3.  Haskins struggles in NFL and gets benched.  Tragically he dies being hit by truck.

4.  Two 5 Star QBs transfer/leave

-Ewers to Texas

-Raiola decommits

5.  Receivers coach Hartline rushed to hospital after crashing ATV drunk in corn field

6.  Luke Fickell turns Cincinnati into playoff team after being bailed on by OSU

-leaves for Wisconsin HC

7.  Day gets torched by Michigan 2 straight seasons with Stroud.

-Offers QB scholarship to Day Jr.

8.  OSU AD Gene Smith announces retirement June 30, 2024

I mean, this is a pretty insane turn of events when you look at the totality of it all.

This just feels like the year, neither OSU or Alabama appears to have a top-5 NFL pick at quarterback so hopefully both take a step back for once. Beat Georgia, win it all.
