Rittenberg states new defensive coordinator will use a 3-man front

See the fourth paragraph: "With the team's new defensive coordinator likely using a three-man front, the Wolverines need some help in the back half of the defense, particularly the secondary." Rittenberg is predicting the scheme before we name the DC.

Well if RITTENBURG said it...

I think I'll take the word of Rich Rodriguez over some dude...since, ya know, RR himself said he wants his new DC to be flexible while using the 4-3/3-4 as a base.

I doubt RR has any choice but to listen.

I agree. I thought it noteworthy not because I think it's true, but because it was a weird thing to use to support the thesis of that paragraph: that we need some help in the back half of the defense. He could have simply cited the less-than-stellar play of our LBs and safeties last year to support that. And it just hit me funny that he was speculating about a likely scheme (which as you point out is contrary to what RR said) in the absence of a new DC.

Rittenberg tends to be at least 2 weeks behind most things going on "behind the scenes." He also makes some ridiculous remarks from time to time because (at least I hope this is why, because if not, he is just an idiot) he works for ESPN.

Adam Rittenberg is a complete idiot, if I see an article that he has written I stay away from reading it, because it's most likely wrong

While I'm not exactly defending the guy, his ability to report and his ability to predict are two separate issues.
