RichRod wants Linemen to Cut.

Submitted by McFarlin on
Okay I never really understood RichRod and his desire for athletic smaller linemen. Like at the start of the year he mentioned that he wanted his linemen to cut down and gain speed/quickness. Now I realize that the more speed/quickness the better, you can get to blocks easier and will most likely have better stamina. But typically when someone cuts down they lose a little power as well. The bigger you weigh the less likely you are to get thrown around. Is the speed worth that much? What are the advantages to having an smaller/athletic linemen vs. a Bigger/hog type of linemen?

wow wow wow. I never complain about grammar but, damn. Smaller/athletic linemen = faster Bigger/hog type lineman = stronger/harder for opposing linemen to move. Not much discussion here...

The purpose of the line for RR isn't to hold a pocket for the length of time that is expected in a pro style offense. If they have the right technique and are 20 lbs lighter they should be able to hold their ground for the shorter time required for RR's passing plays and be able to move better/faster for the running plays.

I don't care about body weight. I just want them to be able to drive block the Ohio state defensive lineman on the goal line when the situation calls for it.

RichRod wants missiles to shoot out of the linemen's arms and also each guy has to levitate. The only other thing that I heard was that they were working on some quickness drills that involved a lightning bolt shooting out of someones' helmet.

I don't give two shits about their size as long as they block. Smaller linemen are able to move faster, but big linemen can cover more area. It doesn't really depend on size as much as strength. I'll take a smaller, strong lineman any day over a bulky one that's not as strong.

He wants them to lose weight. Lose weight != cutting. Cutting weight is losing weight for no purpose other than losing weight, and normally done in sports that are made up of weight classes. He wants them to trim down, which makes sense because his offensive lineman aren't going to be bullying people around, they will be getting between a defender, and whoever has the ball. A D-lineman might benefit from additional bulk because some of them don't have to get to any spot in the field, they only have to stay where they are and create a pileup, and I'm not even sure if those are the type of lineman G-Rob uses. TL;DR? No they are not cutting Skinny, mobile lineman > Fat, bruiser lineman.
