Rewatch: 2017 “All or Nothing”

Submitted by Steve Breaston… on July 11th, 2021 at 10:57 PM

I had some time this weekend while packing up our house for our move (downtown Chicago to Action Heights) and decided to throw on All or Nothing. Hadn’t watched it since it’s debuted, but I felt slightly masochistic and slightly depressed about the suburban move. Plus, I just need some football in my life, even if it was the equivalent of getting my dick stepped on.

I more watched to see if I could glean anything about the staff in general, especially in regards to why we lose so many quality players to transfer. Yes, it still cemented the fact that JOK was one of the worst to ever lace em up under center for us and that we need a true QB. But more than that, I wanted to see how Jim interacted with the students, despite the fact that our coaching staff is 98% new. To me, and maybe it’s bc I see what the cameras want me to, but Coach is corny and weird, yet really seems to care about those players that have tarnished him on their way out. Looking at DPJ and Tarik, specifically. The other knock is that Coach isn’t a big “speech at halftime guy” and some other nuances. For example, Sagan wouldn’t have responded with the “get em next time Johnny” if OK made those same throws for Alabama. Sometimes you need to instill the fear of God in players and Jim has none of that. Is it good or bad? I don’t know. I’ve been drinking 1792 Full Proof for the better part of the evening but to me it seems like Jim stops just short of giving the players the toughness they sometimes need.

Is this post revalatory? Nope? Will I get some “cool” responses? No doubt. Either way I encourage you to rewatch if you’re in need of some crippling depression to see how you perceive things now, especially focusing on Jim and how he runs the program.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

What many of my buddies (ACC and SEC fans as I live in the South) commented on was what you eluded to…that Coach Harbaugh is odd, awkward, weird and not a great “Rah Rah” / pump the team up kind of Head Coach.

To be fair, you have to be a bit odd to get to that level.  Coach Harbaugh just comes off as an odder duck than most.

I think sometimes that's where the NFL influence has hurt him a little as a coach. He expects players to just show up and do their jobs like they would be expected to in the NFL. It is on them to play motivated every game and not need and bunch of speeches and other methods to hype them up. But in college these kids are still young and haven't always learned that part of it yet and do sometimes need some extra motivating, especially in rivalry games and road games when they don't have the home fans and atmosphere to help out.

I think this is it. And it explains why so many Michigan players get drafted. Players who succeed at Michigan and get a recommendation from Harbaugh are likely to possess a workmanlike attitude that will carry over to the NFL.

Based on some comments during the staff change, I do think that Harbaugh realizes that his approach is insufficient, and so hopefully we see a change in the team culture.

Back when we thought 2017 was gonna be as bad as it gets with Jim.

Oh well, I’ll always have that documentary to thank for getting the S.O. Into Michigan sports.

The thing about 2017 is that Hoke's poor offensive line recruiting caught up with us. This was one of the worse lines since RR days. Our starting QB got roughed up and injured before the conference season started  The team improved with Shea transfer but got whipped by OSU two consecutive seasons.

You could say it was mediocre overall, but Hoke recruited several players at that position who wound up spending time in the NFL (Magnuson, Kalis, Braden, Cole, even Runyan). Newsome might've gotten there. The 2013 class (understandably) gets most of the attention. It's similar at the WR position.

That line...OK at opening holes for the running game but couldn't pass protect to save their life.  It might be why Speight looked nothing like he did the previous year before his season ending injury in game 5.

We also had an issue losing fumbles that season.  A lost fumble pretty much handed MSU their first TD on a platter in that rainstorm game.

I recently rewatched it as well. Harbaugh does come across as an odd guy, but his passion for Michigan football is undeniable. It’s too bad that doesn’t translate to points or wins.

My main takeaway was the reminder of how close they were to beating OSU again. If JT Barrett doesn’t get hurt, Michigan might have won that game. If JOK doesn’t have to come in, Michigan might have won that game. If Metellus doesn’t drop the interception, Michigan might have won that game. There are so many things that had to happen in order for Michigan to lose the game, but that’s exactly what happened. I think 2016 and 2017 were our chances to change the momentum of The Game, but we failed both times, OSU has taken another step forward and we’ve taken a step or two backwards.

As much as people want to blame Harbaugh, or the coaching in general, it still shocks me how many games they could have won, if players (who were in position to make plays) would have just made a simple play. Not an extraordinary play, or a Sports Center play of the week, but just a simple catch, or throw, or block, or tackle in a crucial point of a given game. The next time we have a player make a play in a big game, will be the 1st time since Harbaugh has been here.

I agree players need to make plays, but I also think the head coach has a big role in how the team performs. I can't say one coaching style creates X or another creates Y, but as you pointed out, Harbaugh's teams at Michigan have seldom made a key play to win a big game. Whether his influence makes them play tight, or not focused, or what, I have no idea, but I do think it is Harbaugh influenced.

This is especially pertinent regarding OSU. With the gap in talent, Michigan needs to play a near perfect game to win. That creates pressure to perform...see above....see record against OSU. This has been true dating back to the second half of Lloyd Carr's days. For 20 years Michigan seems to miss the big play or make the big mistake when playing against really good teams.

This is one of the things that confounds me about the Harbaugh era at Michigan. Jim is clearly as type-A and presumably as detail-oriented as they come in CFB. From what I've read, he demands 110% at practice and presumably has little tolerance for mistakes. But on gamedays, the team seems to lack mental focus and sharpness, leading to mistakes and the aforementioned negative reactions to pressurized environments.

Is it a case of him pushing the team too hard at practice? I don't think so, because I'm reasonably sure teams that want to be top-end have intense practices. Is it the assistants mailing it in? Could be -- and this would mean that the staff changes will hopefully help. Bad luck? I don't think that's it, because it's been happening too consistently. But it's definitely something. I'd be very interested in some insight into what it is.

"Plus, I just need some football in my life, even if it was the equivalent of getting my dick stepped on."

Well, in a few weeks, we will undoubtedly begin to hear tidbits from camp, so if you are patient, you'll get some of the usual shots across the....uh.....bow soon enough.

Agree with the take on Harbaugh seeming like he’s in another planet. I suspect he is on anxiety meds or something, he seems disconnected from the people and situations he is dealing with, like he’s in a cloud or something. Other big take aways were the way they basically ignored Mo Hurst who was easily one of the biggest stars of that season. Also, what a ridiculous and soft cry baby Rashaun Gary was. Literally bawling his eyes out like he wanted his momma. No wonder he never became a leader nor a real game changer for the Wolverines.
