Recruiting critics can stop tonight

Submitted by myrtlebeachmai… on

With the assumed addition (we're all thinking so by now, yes??) of Roh tonight, can we all please stop the posts bashing RR for focusing on "too many speedy little 3 star buggers"?

Last year, the guy came in with little time and scooped up guys that are already either playing, or getting mention of doing so.  Some will undoubtedly call it playing favorites (i.e his own recruits), but none the less, he didn't exactly come in and pick up useless pieces either.

This year, we have taken on a number of "buggers", but he needed to in order to have some competiton/flexibility at those spots.  Aside from buggers, he's done extremely well.  Major needs:  QB two 4 stars (Rivals - only one 5 star dual-threat in whole 09 class);  D-line two 4 star DEs (only two 5's in 09), one 5 star (I believe in Campbell) and one 4 star DT; etc.  OL is the only weak spot, but do you honestly think many kids are going to commit looking at the class of 08 in front of them?  It all adds up to a currently ranked #6 class (Rivals again) for a guy in his first year of major schematic/coaching transition.  Now we can afford to "pick and choose" a few select pieces to complete a great year.

Give the man a break.

I wasn't expecting either of those wide outs, just wishful thinking that maybe RR could pull a few big surprises out. I do get more excited/worried about bringing in 5 stars than I probably should.

Rod's recruiting.  We'll be top 5ish in February.  That's including guys who are rated 3 stars in part due to their size but who are more valuable than that in Rod's system.

Have you seen his classes at WVU? Noone liked them either and he managed to win with them. He can recruit whoever he wants, if he wins with them there won't be any problems. Now, I'm not saying that recruiting isn't important, but judging by past performance, RichRod probably has a pretty god idea of who he needs to run his team succesfully.

After today, I'd just like to see us sign one more offensive lineman and I'll be happy with whatever else we're able to pull in. That's assuming we get Campbell back of course.

And even if we don't land another o-lineman, I still think this is as impressive a recruiting class as I've seen from Michigan the past few years (not quite USC level but above the Wisconsins of the world).

BTW, anyone know what offensive lineman we're still seriously in play for? Freeman seems like a long shot for some reason, and per The Other Brian, is a Joseph Barksdale style flakey wierdo. I think Brennan Williams seems to want to stay on the east coast despite the story changing on a weekly basis. And as for Marcus Hall, Cleveland Glenville is all I can say. So who's left? Any rumblings regarding snake oil fueled defections?

have nothing to stand on.  RichRod's recruiting has been fantastic.  Most of the true freshmen who figure into our offensive plans this season(Shaw,Odoms,Robinson,Barnum/Omameh) were his guys.  Their recruiting rankings have zero value now - they are all on the depth charts at UM.  That's plenty good.

This 09 class is shaping up to be fantastic as well, and anybody complaining about it is a moron.  When it's all said and done, you'll have four 4/5star-ish guys to brag about on the DLine(plus one more we may not hear about), 2 top-shelf athletic QBs, more weapons outside, in the slot, and in the backfield, and fantastic safeties.  And an elite kicker for good measure.  We'd all love to see a few more olinemen or CBs commit, but that's being spoiled.  This is a great, great class - sullied only by the fucking retards who think we're "wasting" scholarships on great players like Vincent Smih, just because he's underranked by recruiting services.  These lemmings would jump in glee if we landed 4-star ish Dion Simms, despite the fact he'd have no place on this team.  But hey, the class will look better on paper.  And that's all that matters to the archaic Michigan fan.

Its rather impressive that RR is recruiting as well as he is given that he has only coached three games and none have gone very well.  Add to that the fact that he has only had a few months to build relationships between himself, the school and the recruit.

Kudos to RR.

point to a healthy supply of snake oil.

I'm not criticizing, just pointing out; need to land a couple big time O-Linemen.  You typically play 8 to 11 Olinemen in a year, and right now we have 4 healthy scholarship guys that are good to go.  even though no one graduates we need to get at least a couple for this class.

But let's not worry about this till the season is over.  Remember what RR did with just 3 months last year.  So far, so good.

We signed five OL last class, three of whom were four-star prospects.  Next year they'll probably be seeing the field.  That's a big reason why we haven't gotten too many this class so far.  We just happen to be in a situation where our upperclass OL either got hurt or didn't pan out.
