RBCC: Ron Gould

Submitted by rainingmaize on

In one of these RBCC threads, someone brought up the name of Ron Gould.

WHO: Running Back coach for Cal between 1997-2012, Running Game coordinator and Associate head coach at Cal from 2011-2012. Head Coach of UC Davis from 2013-2016. Will turn 52 years old in September

WHY: Played a part in coaching an insanely impressive list of running backs. This includes Marshawn Lynch, CJ Anderson, Justin Forsett, Shane Vereen, Jahvid Best. Experience as a running game coordinator. Has a lot of connections with the California recruiting base.

WHY NOT: Never has left the West Coast. HC stint at UC Davis was not impressive.

Interesting idea. Personally I like the thought that Harbaugh will pull a rabbit out of a hat by getting some dynamic high school coach who he interacted with during the summer tours over the past two years. People like to focus on the recruiting of players from those camps, but it would be great if Harbaugh also recruited great coaching talent from them as well. Another FU to the SEC.

I just want to point out someting about his career. Prior to being hired to coach RBs at Cal, he played DB in college and coached DBs at Portland St and Boise St. This was back when Boise was still I-AA, FCS in today's terms.. Never coached offense and never coached FBS level.

The good news for me is there are 128 Division 1 football teams so only 123 more of these threads to go. Every single current RB coach in America deserves his own thread IMO.

I'm certain that coach Harbaugh will hire the best available guy for the job. However, if the eventual RB coach has recruiting ties in a state loaded with talent, I won't complain.
