One would think that a guy that was good enough at wrestling to get a D1 scholarship offer would want to play a defensive position in football.

Yeah, but Gaige is a pretty remarkable RB!

Should have about 7,000 career rushing yards and close to 130 rushing TDs by the time his high school career is finished:

I assume Gavin is his younger brother who is already putting up huge numbers, akin to Gaige.

State's backup QB was a stud wrestler who received many wrestling scholarship offers.
He might be regretting the sport and path he chose now.

Is wrestling a full scholarship? And he’s “walking on” to football as a way to save schollies...
November 14th, 2019 at 8:55 AM ^
I thought that any scholarship counted against the football and basketball limits so that schools couldn't use track, wrestling, etc. as work-arounds to the limit.
November 14th, 2019 at 8:59 AM ^
It does, it’s the Santana moss rule. When Miami was hit with scholarships, he got a track scholarship and played football.

Lol those Miami teams were just one big, glorious middle finger to the NCAA

This is true, but I'm pretty sure it only hits the football team if/when he actually plays in a game. So he could be on wrestling scholarship for the first few years, and then football scholarship later in his career (if it gets to that point).

Right about the rule, but I doubt it will work out that way. It's going to be very hard to wrestle while staying on the football team. There's too much overlap of their schedules. Wrestling season is already underway
I think Garcia will get what's essentially a tryout for football his freshman year. He either makes an impression early and gets a football scholarship or sticks with wrestling.

Maybe he can put on 80 lbs and become another Mike Martin.
November 14th, 2019 at 9:16 AM ^
I thought you couldn't do that? As in, if you play football and are on athletic scholarship, that counts against football scholly numbers
November 14th, 2019 at 9:21 AM ^
Only if he actually plays in a football game (as far as I understand the rule). Until then, he's just a walk-on, that is a scholarship wrestler. But the moment he steps on the field in a game, he counts towards the football limit.
November 14th, 2019 at 9:21 AM ^
You'll be right the second he steps on the field in an actual game. Until then, he's a walkon using a wrestling scholarship

Good running back...but I could have ran for 1000 yards behind the holes his offensive line was creating for him..
November 14th, 2019 at 9:25 AM ^
No, you couldn’t have.

How about the LBs and DLinemen he runs by, through, and around, making them look like fools...could you do that too?
November 14th, 2019 at 10:12 AM ^
Yeah, he definitely has good instincts. He looks fast, too
November 14th, 2019 at 10:34 AM ^
Gaige has had a great HS career and is a nice RB with what looks like decent speed and good open-field instincts, but he doesn't have a single P5 offer and his only 1-A offers are from the service academies. This doesn't mean he couldn't have a nice career with the right 1-A program, but the fact that so few are willing to offer him reflects the general assessment of his potential at the next level.
November 14th, 2019 at 10:45 AM ^
Or...they all know he wants to focus on wrestling. Everyone thought Ronnie Bell was going to play college basketball so football teams ignored him.
This is a low-cost flyer for football since he will only count against scholarships if he's good enough to do something in a game.

Speaking of recruiting...… I noticed we only have Seldon coming in next year at CB so far.... and hes Terry sized, that Cass Tech CB we had who never grew.... this seems ominous.... how is it we aren't in on a few more CB? This is feeling like a big void coming in a few years, like we had with OT. Yes, we are in on that California CB but if he doesn't fall, we will have a huge potential hole. I don't get it, I'd think CBs would want to play for Brown.
November 14th, 2019 at 9:58 AM ^
I don't necessarily disagree. But I kind of suspect that Eamonn Dennis will come in as a corner. I know he wants to play offense, but the fact that his primary recruiters list Brown and Zordich strengthens my suspicion.

Would it be difficult to manage two sports like Football and wrestling?
November 14th, 2019 at 1:09 PM ^
Very. Wrestling is a full year sport. Especially if he has aspirations beyond college. Not even to mention the diet you keep all year to maintain weight and body conditioning as a wrestler. This kid is a Pennsylvania State Champ. It isn't too far fetched to think that he's coming to Michigan to focus solely on wrestling.

Wasn't Joey Velazquez, an All-State baseball player in Ohio, going to play for the Michigan baseball team? Isn't he currently on a football scholarship? He hasn't played in any football games this year. If he were to play for the baseball team and make significant contributions in 2020, would his football scholarship be in jeopardy, or could he just continue to hold a football scholarship as long as he's on the football roster, even if he never gets to play in a football game and gets more playing time with the baseball team?
