Potential Men's Basketball Transfer - Seventh Woods

Submitted by True Blue 9 on May 28th, 2019 at 5:28 PM

UMHoops has an interesting article up about a transfer that has mentioned Michigan as a potential landing spot.....and I'll just say, don't kill the messenger.

He's at UNC right now, would have to sit a year and have one year of eligibility. His stats at UNC haven't been very good. I'll be interested to see how this plays out but I'm not a fan of using one of our scholarships on this, in particular with giving him a scholarship just to sit a year and we only get a year of playing out of him.

What am I missing?

This kids middle school mixtape was a viral sensation. He was touted as the “next great thing” at that point.

The best hoops mixtape still remains John Wall’s

He had trouble getting into UNC's rotation (which has been pretty deep for the past few seasons). But I'm not sure if he is exceptional at anything, so he'd be a guy at best.

My thought is that he will probably be more ready to play physically and mentally than most freshman will be and he will have had an offseason to learn Howard's style of play  It would be like getting a grad transfer for next season. I like the potential of it.

He will essentially be like a grad transfer next year.  He will only take up a scholarship in the 20 class. Even if we fill all 3 spots open right now, we will have a minimum of 2 spots open next year including Zeb. My guess is that there will be at least one or two additional spots open up. Who knows if Davis will get a 5th year and someone is likely to transfer with a new system installed. I'd say it's well worth the risk, one you would have with a high schooler anyway

I remember watching his 9th grade season youtube video. That was the craziest thing I had ever seen. I couldn't figure out how he was only ranked the 20th player in the country at that time. Thon Maker was ranked ranked #1 at that point. By the time they finished, I believe Harry Giles was ranked #1.

I know nothing about him as a player or prospect. That said I really don't like the idea of banking multiple scholarships this season. With new coaches and a new system there is most certainly going to be further attrition at the end of (or possibly even before) this season. If it looks like were going to end up with only Bajema in this class then bring this kid in and lets see what happens in a year.

If this season's scholarship isn't going to anyone else it seems absolutely worth the opportunity cost of one scholarship year for the 5th year season of a top-50 recruit.

This is my thought process as well. We still have two open scholarships available for this season and it looks like were going to strike out with all of our grad transfer options. I definitely don't think were the favorites to sign Wilson at this point either. Compared to banking multiple scholarships or taking last minute flyers on multiple low ranked prospects I would take a shot with this kid.

For sure. No reason to take a HS guy who likely won't crack a rotation on a good Michigan team.

Also would be nice to stagger scholarships a bit between the '20 and '21 classes. Taking 5+ guys is usually less than ideal (especially the +) and right now Michigan has five scholarships open for '20 before any attrition.

He's a guard that's hit a total of six 3's in 800+ minutes over three seasons and averaged less than two points a game.

If he wasn't a top 50 recruit coming out of HS, no one here would give him a second look. In my opinion, he was a top 50 recruit in part because he was sensational in 8th and 9th grade. He didn't progress much from then.

I'd rather see Juwan evaluate and recruit his own players in 2020. I think he can do much better.

Couldn't disagree more. Locking up a 2020 spot now for a guy who almost certainly will not be good enough to start adds no value. It also precludes us from using the spot on someone who could play in 2019. Those chances are dwindling, but not gone, afaik.

I can see the merit in not wanting too big a freshman class in 2020, but we should do at least as well picking up a grad transfer then. If you look at some of the 2020 recruits we should be in on, it's an impressive group with several you'd expect to contribute right off the bat.

Juwan should take his shot at those instead of adding a replacement level PG now. We already have Zeb in the class. We definitely need to add a big, a SG and at least one wing.

One thing to bear in mind is that Juwan is bringing a lot of excitement to the program. He's going to have the attention of recruits, including some elite players that he already has some connection to. He should aim high and try to make a splash in recruiting his first class.

Still plenty of space to make a splash and they flat out need bodies, including bodies for practice.

Six open spots for 2020 right now without any attrition. How good is the 6th or 7th best guy they can get in the 2020 class and how much will he contribute in 2020 and beyond vs. a year of Woods and the 3rd or 4th best guy they can in 2021?

Doesn't sound at all like Michigan is getting him so this is academic but I think a bird in hand is useful even if it's a replacement level bird.

I wouldn't be opposed to Juwan taking a couple of talented transfers for next years class if they fit. Hes already behind in the recruiting of the top 2020 players anyway. He could essentially use the transfer portal as his 20 class to go along with Zeb and whatever he signs late this cycle. You have some serious former high school talent in the transfer portal, like Quinerly from Villanova and Jemarl Baker from UK.

This would be solid. There are a lot of spaces open, and nobody to fill them.

As somebody said above, the opportunity risk is low. If he wants to be a Wolverine, then he should be a Wolverine

Is it about Michigan.? The coach or a combination,? I like kids that understand it's probably a combination if you get life.

No.  Do not take.  You waste a 2020 scholarship which could get you a young guy you can develop and get into the system for years.  He hasnt done anything at UNC to suggest he would start here. If he was immediately eligible then take a chance if you have a spot but other than that. Do NOT WANT.

I forgot about this kid. Yeah he was a sensation in high school. He's already through 3 years of college ball? And his career game up to this point appears to be a 14 point, 4 assist game earlier this season...
