Possible good vibes re: 2021 RB Donovan Edwards

Submitted by Magnus on March 21st, 2020 at 9:52 AM

Continuing in distraction mode, West Bloomfield (MI) West Bloomfield running back Donovan Edwards had a crystal ball from Steve Wiltfong go from "OSU" to "Foggy." It appears more and more likely that Hopewell (VA) Hopewell running back TreVeyon Henderson, the #1 RB in 2021, is going to pick Ohio State. That would give OSU two blue-chip running back commitments in Henderson and Evan Pryor.

Edwards is now at 40% Michigan, 40% Ohio State, 10% Georgia, and 10% foggy.

In other good news, WR Deion Colzie decommitted from Notre Dame, and Michigan immediately offered. Not that I think Colzie will go to Michigan, but because it's bad news for the Irish.

And California WR Xavier Worthy named Michigan to his top six, though he hasn't visited.

Ugh. I mean, it'd be great getting Edwards of course, but getting him because OSU took 2 higher-ranked blue-chip RBs is just the worst possible way a commitment from him could come about, for as weird as that sounds. Even good news requires OSU putting a knife in our side.

And Corey Kiner, a guy who Michigan is in pretty good position with, is #10.

IF Michigan gets the #2 and #10 RBs in the country, it would be an EXCELLENT class.  Better than anyone but OSU.  Is that a reason for ennui?  Do people realize that in the 2020 class OSU landed 1 RB, and that a generic 3*?

Further, IF Michigan were to land those two, they'd add them to a roster with Charbonnet, Haskins, Turner (he was promising at times last year), and Corum (who OSU pursued aggressively late in the 2020 cycle).  It would be a better RB room than Ohio State for the future, full stop.  Though both would be excellent.

Steve Lorenz consistently talks about how well Jaybaugh has recruited - and maybe more importantly, identified - talent.   Michigan consistently offers guys early who later climb up the 247 rankings.

Remember finding Haskins was almost an entirely Jaybaugh thing, just based on film review.

I'm really not a whiner. I wrote a long optimistic post at the end of last season. And it just takes one win to change the narrative, but it's also impossible to ignore OSU's recruiting advantage. Been a while since Michigan has had a great backfield. Since Hart really. Hopefully it pays off.

Personally, if I had to chose between the #2 back and #17 guy overall (Henderson) from out of state and the #3 back and #38 guy overall (Edwards) in state, I'd prefer the home town guy, particularly if that means keeping MI's best players away from OSU, even if they get the higher ranked guy.  IMO it's important to hold onto our in state guys.

I do think they're cheating because there's no other logical reason that OSU should be recruiting on this high of a level. Are they a perennial top 5 team? Absolutely. But there's no logical reason that they should be recruiting better other known cheaters like LSU, Clemson, Alabama and Georgia who all have nicer weather, campuses, girls, etc.

This MGoApologism that they are *not* cheating seems pretty absurd.

t(tm)OSU has a very lengthy and highly successful history of cheating in a variety of areas. They are entrepreneurial and innovative in the space.

They are, perhaps, expert in the cheating. Of course, there has been just plain paying players (a rather gaudy SEC approach). They have also demonstrated capacity in the areas of fake jobs (again, a t(tm)OSU standby). Weed/tats and free cars defined the Terelle Pryor era (indeed, innovating that allows the cooler poopers to take pride). More recent use of wide receivers coach as pseudo bag man again feels a bit SEC in nature. The whole "didn't come here to play school" angle has been perfected with attendance only required at the football complex. Complete online degrees have enabled the University of Southern New Hampshire to meet the B1G.

But yeah, they probably aren't cheating at all.

Yes OSU is cheating. I think everyone is but uofm, ND, and Stanford. But when I say those 3 are not cheating, I mean from a head coach approved levels. Players are still getting benefits in those teams from other indirect sources.

What are you talking about?

He's not a 3 star project. He's a high 4 star and 247 has him as the #2 running back and #22 overall in the country. This has gotten to the absurd level.

If the idea of Michigan signing that level player makes you miserable you people because Ohio signed the #1 then you are doomed to a life of misery.

People will neg you. They negged me for saying this. But this is a reality. I'm not saying that I agree that Georgia is where he ends up but I do think this comes down to a decision. Will Donovan Edwards end up a wolverine? Possibly maybe even probably... But he's probably going to have a hat on the table or two besides ours...

Chadillac Grillz

March 21st, 2020 at 1:09 PM ^

That's totally true and I hope Donovan Edwards becomes a wolverine!!!... And I know people don't like me saying the Georgia has a shot but some of those folks need to quit negging so quickly. It gives the blog a bad feel to not be allowed to have a voice of dissent or be realistic about anything that isn't positive (without backlash). I hope you're right I'm beginning to think you probably are!!! Go blue let's get Donovan Edwards!

I agree, accurate info is good whether or not it's bad news for Michigan.  I would just say that the bad news that people neg often comes in one of two forms: it's presented as a sky is falling narrative, like nothing will go well for Michigan again, or it's presented without context that makes it seem more negative.

Edwards is a top recruit that everyone wants.  It's not going to be a cakewalk, unfortunately.  UGA is a contender here, but OSU was the leader and them being apparently out of the picture is excellent news.

I clicked on this link for two reasons, 1. I'm thirsty for sports related news right now, 2. I wanted to feel better about our football team's future success.

Welp, the second part certainly didn't happen considering I just learned that our biggest rival is going to get 2 of the top RBs in the country.

Bodogblog

OSU took one RB in last year's class, he was a 3*, the #45 RB in the class, and #625 overall.  Did you feel good last year when Michigan picked up Blake Corum, the #12 RB and #128 overall?

Their presumed starter for next year likely has a torn achiiles, suffered in the first few days of their spring ball.  The back up was injured late last season and wasn't available for spring practice.  They had one scholarship RB taking reps.

They're likely to get a transfer, and they certainly have talent, it will probably work out for them.  Getting two of the top ten RBs is incredibly impressive, if it happens.  But if OSU's current situation were happening here, Michigan fans would be absolutely losing their minds.

I would rather get Edwards simply from the standpoint that he’s an in-state kid, and Harbaugh needs to capitalize on the state of Michigan talent this year. Losing out on your top in-state talent blows, but losing him to your “supposed“ arch-rival would be embarrassing.

Plus, is there really a huge difference between Edwards (2) and Henderson (1)? Serious question.  Is the talent between the two that enormous?

Top recruits in ohio always look to osu first and most commit.  I respect  that even though osu as a school isn't that respectable.

Donovan Edwards is cant miss. I went to watch Wheeler, Paige, 2021 Rocco Spindler and Garrett Dellinger last year in the West Bloomfield-Clarkston game and left most impressed with Edwards.

Yes, I am a Buckeye fan but also a graduate of Roger Bacon H.S. and still have some ties there and am a bigger fan of Kiner than OSU, from what I heard he would have went to Ohio State if they would have accepted him but what I'm hearing out of people I trust inside of Bacon is he's down to Cincinnati, LSU and Michigan. His coach played at Cincinnati and the local tie is strong for him, hearing Cincinnati is being looked at by Big 12 and ACC for inclusion and it's playing a part in his recruitment, that said if I had to make a choice on where he goes today it's Cincinnati, he likes Michigan but he LOVED Ohio State, Cincinnati is a neutral hometown decision for him and his family. Edwards is the dark horse here, Henderson from everything I've read is a silent commit to Ohio State and Edwards is kind of ticked that they didn't wait on him so that may make him lean Michigan but Georgia produces NFL RB's and Michigan has had a hard time of that lately which was the draw for him to Ohio State to begin with

It's important to add context to this from Sam Webb.  Basically OSU appears to be out of it.  Why?  Because it seems Edwards feels like OSU wasn't honest with him in terms of who was on their RB board and where he stood.  The change in CB is almost certainly due to Pryor committing and Henderson being on the verge, as Magnus notes.  My takeaway from the post is that Edwards felt like they weren't honest with him.  Remember all that stuff about Day recruiting him personally?  This would of course mean Day was lying to him.  Taking a few leaps there but it seems to be the case.  OSU coach lying to a top recruit in Michigan is a pretty good thing.  OSU could probably only take two RBs.

The other bit of good news is that Sam has said on his show (I believe, in other words I don't think this is insider info because I don't want to give too much of that away - subscribe to 247, it's worth it) that having Day recruit him was big to Edwards, and that Harbaugh hadn't been in as much direct contact. Well he called the kid this week, and Gattis has gotten much more involved. Positive developments for Michigan's pursuit.

This is the second reported case of OSU lying to recruits now isn't it? JJ McCarthy and now Edwards. It seems like OSU just tells recruits what they want to hear regardless of the facts of the situation in order to get people to commit. Then when the lie comes back around, they just shrug and move on

brutus strength

That was all a lie by Webb, you can go back a few weeks on eleven warriors when he visited and he and his coach both acknowledged that Ohio State wanted 2 RB's, here is where Edwards gets ticked, they told him they were down to 3 RB's and the 1st 2 to commit were in, guessing they told Pryor and Henderson the same and now Edwards is mad because he didn't think the other 2 would commit so soon and yes, from everything I've read Henderson is a silent commit

The story is based on an interview with the kid's father, in all likelihood.  So now an Ohio State fan on a Michigan blog who was hoping to concern troll, is instead calling a top national recruit from the state of Michigan, and his father, a liar.

I'm glad this is bothering you. Thanks for stopping by.

Several other OSU fans upvoting your posts, this is wonderful.  Still in your heads after all the losing.  Imagine what will happen when we win again.

Edwards and his father feel like they weren't dealt with honestly.  Sam Webb is reporting what they feel.  So yeah Ryan Day was dishonest with a top national recruit from the state of Michigan, who comes from one of the best high schools for talent we have, with one of the most influential high school coaches (a Michigan grad) in the region.  This is a really nice development for Michigan fans.  It's done, it's over, and you whining on a Michigan blog and calling the kid and his father a liar isn't going to change anything.  But I'm glad it bothers you.

I hate ohio and everything in it but if you are putting stock into anything Sam Webb says then JFC I'm sorry.  It is pretty well known in the recruiting world that he is a mouthpiece for us and tries to spread more disinformation than facts.  Is Edwards possibly upset? sure I don't doubt that but for him to openly admit that he felt lied to which would end any recruitment from them is just patently absurd.  Does he feel rushed possibly? yes but right now they are recruiting at a clip that is insane so you either get on the bus or you are off. Also this notion that they shouldn't be recruiting this well is also just plain stupid.  They won a Natty in '14 and have made it to the playoffs two more times sense, They are a perennial top 5 team and players saw how dominant they were last year and their '20 class is insane so again why wouldn't guys want to go somewhere they see getting to the playoffs and the NFL is a much easier road?
