Peppers & Lewis named First Team All-American (Sporting News)

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Chris Wormley named Second Team and for some reason Jake Butt was also named Second Team.

Ole Miss TE got First Team because the media likes shiny objects.

To be a consensus All-American, you have to get 1st team from 3 of the 5-

AP, AFCA, FWAA, TSN & WCFF.

Peppers and Lewis are 2-for-2 with 3 left to go, so odds are really looking good. Butt winning the Mackey should get him two more at the very least.

and second round NFL draft picks. Peppers, Lewis, Butt, Wormley, Charlton, Glasgow, Darboh in the first three this year, I'm sure I'm missing someone. Plus lots of other draftees like Chesson and Strib and Godin.

This might not be a popular opinion, but Butt did not have an elite season this year. Even Brian alluded to this on the front page the other day. He struggled with drops this year, especially in critical situations. He also is not great in the run game, but that has been an issue throughout his time at UM. I'm not saying he wasn't good; he just wasn't really dominate in any game this year.

He also got double and triple teamed all year long because he's such a receiving threat. He probably played better overall last season, but I think his blocking was improved. It WAS pretty disappointing to see him not make some of the big plays due to drops that he did make last year. I still think he's the best overall TE in the country.

Yeah, I'm not really sure who deserves the first team all-American accolade the most. I'm not certain how their stats compare, but I watched a few PSU and Wisconsin games this year and both teams have starting tight ends who I feel were at least comparable to Jake Butt this year.
