Outside of Michigan... B1G and non-B1G football team surprises

Submitted by JDeanAuthor on September 1st, 2019 at 8:10 PM

Forgetting us for a minute, what did you see in the B1G and in other conferences that has most surprised you?

Mine
B1G-Purdue: Have to admit I was surprised they lost to Nevada like that. Maybe add Northwestern, considering how good they were last year.

Other: Georgia and Auburn have me curious now.

northwestern game was quirky - injuries played a big part for both teams.  both teams lost their QB's, NW lost their big back who was having a very good day running the ball.  could easily have gone their way.  go cats!

Boise, Memphis and Cinci getting huge wins against Power 5.  Keeping them in the running for a top 18 finish and a “BCS Bowl” bid and push out that Top 12 team.

the B10 west got way too much run pre-season. Pur, Minn and Neb are not making the jumps people expect, imo. They are better; but 7-5-to-8-4 better. not 9-10 win better.

not that that isn't significant but we shouldn't expect 4 B10 West teams to run thru their non-conf sched with ease.

Pac12 is garbage as expected - UW and maybe UO are the only good teams there. Wassu and Stanford are decent, not great.

Start with what DIDN'T surprise me.  Wyoming beating Mizzou, Nevada beating Purdue.  Live out here and am more familiar with the MWC than probably most of you.  Those are two tough road games.  I had both of those at least covering their spreads.  MWC was 4-2 vs. P5 teams: W's - Purdue, FSU, AZ, Mizzou.  L's USC, Colorado.  ISU struggling to win vs (FCS) NIU wasn't a big surprise.  ISU is what they always are.  Middle to lower of the pack Big 12 who is always going to ruin at least one other conference teams season and that's about it.

BSU over FSU was a little surprise.

WVU struggling hard to beat James Madison.

What happened to Va Tech?  UVA is for real and I expect them to win their Div.

PSU putting up 79.

I'm not surprised that Maryland and PSU scored a lot of points ... They played teams that were vastly undermatched.  Running up the score against Howard proves what?

That 2015 Boston College team with Don Brown as defensive coordinator beat Howard 76-0. With that and a 24-3 victory over Maine, they scored nearly half of their points that season (100 out of 206) and had two out of their three victories.

(So it proves exactly nothing, in other words.)

In Big Ten - That Osu thinks Justin Fields is going to play a full season and not get injured with the play calling they were going with.

Out of Big Ten - Sacred Heart has a Turnover Chain made of Elmers Glue. I love the Turnover Chain idea, but it didn't help Sacred Heart, as Maine beat their ass. Mettellus had a Championship belt of some sort on the sideline, but don't think we are using a TO chain.

I'll do a rundown by P5 conference on surprises to me:

ACC: FSU losing to Boise State- based on last season not so much but really expected them to make that next step. Should we talk about how bad the U looked on offense?

B1G: Nebraska is not making the progression expected, this could get ugly. Northwestern not looking good. Purdue losing to Nevada? The rest went pretty much as expected, lots of teams showing some rust.

B12: No surprises here, Les Miles got his first win at Kansas!

PAC12: still look bad. Arizona loses to Hawaii, Cinci beats UCLA, USC and Iowa State in close games against inferior teams and Oregon losing the big week 1 matchup.

SEC: Oh sheer joy of opening week SEC weakness! We've already discussed Florida and how bad they looked, Tennessee loses to Georgia State who have only been playing football for a few years, South Carolina loses to UNC, Ole Miss loses to Memphis and Missouri to Wyoming. In one weekend there goes the supposed power of the SEC. Its ok to say the top of the league is good in Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Auburn and.... yeah, that's about it but the whole scenario that has been around for far too long that the SEC is deep and its hard to win is gone in smoke. The east division looks worse rather than improved, I live in Columbia (SC) area and pre-season fans actually thought they could beat Alabama because they are the last east conference team to do so, LOL! Transitive history is lost on them.

B1G - Surprised Nebraska's defense got two TDs; was expecting their offense to be better. S. Alabama is tricky though. And I was surprised Purdue lost - although if you told me before the game that the Boilermakers would turn it over 5 times, then I would have expected an L.Biggest surprise is that Rutgers scored 48.

Non-B1G - Surprised Duke stayed with Alabama for a half, sort of. Surprised Syracuse's offense didn't look better. And surprised that no top-25 team lost to an unranked foe; I think Oregon to Auburn is the only top-25 loss? Would like to see stats on how often that happens (no top-25 losses to unranked teams in week 1). ND still got a shot at it in Louisville tomorrow, I guess.

Imho,

OU D < Michigan D

Both OU and Houston know how to run tempo/spread more smoothly than Michigan. Let's see where M goes...I think they will keep getting better on offense.

field goal franklins bitch ass trying to score 100 on the worst FCS team. I seriously hate him and Penn State. I guess it’s not really a surprise seeing how big of a douche he is.

Illinois seems to have improved quite a bit. Transfers from USC & Michigan have helped a lot.

It's kind of funny how bad Minny & Nebraska looked after getting so many accolades, especially from the BTN crew.
