OT-Why I want the Lions to draft NUMBER ONE in 2010.....
The Lions would probably draft Bradford or Tebow with the #1 pick, anyway, then another receiver.

admit that I don't know much about Berry but I don't really think you can compare stats to Woodson for the sake of making a case for the Heisman. Yeah, Berry had more defensive TD's but a number of Woodson's picks were ridiculous and unreturnable i.e. jumping 18ft in the air against Sparty.
Sure Woodson was a very dominate defensive player and Berry might even be better but a part of the reason Woodson won the Heisman was because of those 4 extra TD's. It's one thing to be feared and dominate on one side of the ball but it is something else to feared and dominate every time you're on the field.
The big thing non Michigan fans fail to realize is that Woodson meant more to the team than just a defensive presence.
With that being said, if Berry is that good and and plays Heisman worthy then he should win it.

I live here in Jowlgia. Got to watch the HS playoff championship on tv. His playoff run was very strong. His high school days were legendary. Worthy of the AA label he received along with all the suitors nation wide who wanted his services. However his sophomore season wasn't all that. EB will have to prove that his sophomore season blues are behind him.
I'd like to see how many passes were thrown at Eric Barry. I think Woodson only had 24 thrown at him in 1997, 8 of which he intercepted and 8 of which were incomplete.
To me, that's the ultimate stat when it comes to DBs.
Took away 1/2 the field when he lined up at corner. Heisman winners also have that one defining moment in the season where they put their team on their back and carry them. Woodson had the pick at MSU which some consider to be the best pick ever. Woodson had the punt return and pick in The Game. He was arguably one of the best players on offense when he switched to WR. The '97 team went undefeated and won the NC. He is the only defensive football player to ever win the Heisman. So id simmer down on the better than Woodson talk.

and stats are meaningless for CBs. Good corners don't get thrown to. Also stats like INTs, tackles are so much a function of other parts of the defense. for example,
Leigh Bodden (in 16 G) 73 tackles, 11 passes defensed, 1 INT
Nnamdi Asomugha (in 15 G) 40 tackles, 9 passes defensed, 1 INT
One got cut by the lions, the other is an all-pro and arguably the best corner in the game.
with that said berry is one of the best defensive players in the country and a likely first round pick. but go watch some charles woodson highlights before talking stupid
Look at my picture.. I think Charles is the better college defensive back. He did take over 1/2 the field on defense, and was a legit threat on offense. That being said i think (besides woodson) sean taylor and eric berry are the two best defensive backs I have watched in the last 10 years.

I'm really excited about the prospects of Brandon Spikes. Or Taylor Mays, although the Lions just drafted (another) safety. That's three safeties in three years in the second round, if anyone's counting. (Daniel Bullocks, Gerald Henderson and now Delmas). Of course only one of them actually SHOULD have gone in the second round, so there's that.

He's a FS in the mold of Ed Reed. He doesn't play CB. I don't know where you get the idea that he's a CB?????
Anyway, I would love for the Lions to draft Carlos Dunlap, DE from Florida or Bryan Buluga, LT from Iowa.
Anyone else find it a little funny that Tennessee fans are using Woodson's 97 Heisman win as grounds that Berry should win the Heisman?

I have lived in Tennessee since the year 2000. You guys have no idea how much I have battled for Charles Woodson's honor down here. I love Woodson and am well aware of his accomplishments, I assure all of you. I have also seen both Woodson and Eric Berry play live, in front of my eyes...have any of you?
I am not loosely throwing around Eric Berry's name and not trying to throw Woodson under the bus. They are two of my favorite defensive backs of all time. I hope you remember this topic in about 7-8 months.

Why? Unless Berry leads Tennessee to an undefeated season and a MNC while also winning the Heisman and making significant contributions on offense and special teams as well, no one's opinion on these here boards is going to change, regardless of the types of stats Berry puts up.
Saying that Berry is better than the only defensive player to ever win the Heisman is going to be a tough sell no matter where you are. Trying to make the argument on a Michigan board is damn near impossible.

He is the most phenomenal secondary player that I've ever seen... since Woodson. I haven't seen too much of Tennessee since last year, but I've seen Berry's highlights and he plays very much like Woodson. But really, one reason that Woodson won the Heisman as a defensive player (not that he is undeserving) is that 1.) he played on an undefeated #1 team. 2.) He returned that punt for a TD against OSU on national television and had an INT also, he showed up huge on national TV. 3.)He played some offense.
If Berry can do all of these things (which he won't) he can win the Heisman and be "as good as Woodson."
i've watched multiple tennessee games. i understand how good eric berry is. he is very good. he's not the most phenomenal d-back since woodson. laron landry, sean taylor, ed reed, etc. were all better in college. berry has time left to change that but in terms of ability he's behind all those guys and arguably not as good as taylor mays. i know its fun to do the whole "he's the best since x, he's one of the best x ever" talk but wish we'd keep our hyperboles within reason.

Maybe arguing for Berry on a Michigan board is impossible, aside from the fact that I am completely obsessed with Michigan football. I live in Tennessee. I have been cussed out countless times by Tennessee fans about Woodson getting the Heisman over Manning. I'm with you guys. I understand the game of football in only a sense that true Michigan fans can appreciate. I was basically throwing this out there so if you get a chance this season to watch a Tennessee game this fall make sure you do. Berry will bring back some memories.

In the SEC I have been to four different stadiums for games. For the most part the fans didn't seem to understand what was going on and people didn't even watch the game. I always feel like its just a social party like church is down here. When I went to Michigan games for 7-8 years...fans seemed very focused into the game. It's just different.
Are you sure you just aren't being highly bias here? What about the sorority girls that show up halfway through the 1st quarter and leave before the start of the 4th? How about the msu triple OT game when half of the student section left in the middle of the 3rd when they thought the game was over? Or maybe the old people that treat football games very much like social events?
Don't read this as me bashing on Michigan, I just thing the opinion that we are so much better then everyone else is silly.
If you think sorority girls at any school give 2 shits about the game, you're mistaken. Girls at any school with a big football tradition treat it as a social event.
The MSU game was anomalous as well, it was really warm at the beginning of the game and cold by the end, plus we were getting killed. I stayed, but not EVERY person who goes to football games are die hard fans.
think I'm being highly bias at all. It's really just my personal experience. I don't have scientific research with stats and data for you to back it up. But at the same time I have been to around one hundred college football games all over the United States and I consider myself observant and fair.
1-Without question Michigan girls know a lot more about football than southern girls. In fact, I asked around ten girls at work to name as many football players in the SEC that they could and almost every one of them said Tebow only and a few said Peyton Manning also. Come on. I have about 30 girls that I keep in contact with still in Michigan and they are way better than that.
2-Sure old people go to Michigan games, in fact, a lot of them...but I always felt like the ones that I sat around were into the game and although quiet were quite observant of what was going on in the field. I have been to plenty of Tennessee games where I have covered my ears because older woman just talked so much during the whole game it was distracting.
3-I can't defend college students who leave games early but being a former college student who had girlfriends, jobs, papers, and exams...when I got free tickets all the time and my team was getting their ass kicked I could understand leaving early.
Wow, I strongly disagree with #1. In fact, when I run into female SEC grads, I'm regularly impressed with how much they know about football. I really didn't know many girls at UM who were into football, even if they went to the games.
(BTW, quick grammatical note: bias is a noun, while biased is the adjective.)
I can't vouch for SEC girls at all (LA girls are worthless, in about every category, unless fake tits is a category), but most of my close girl friends in college, and those I know from UM, are quite knowledgeable about Michigan football on the whole.
