OT - What it feels like to win

Submitted by Wendyk5 on
Today, my son's basketball team had their first win - and it was their last game of the season, and in the tournament, no less. The season has been awful, the team has been terrible, and I was beginning to forget what it feels like to win. I'm a big Michigan fan, and follow mostly football, but basketball as well, so it's not like this is new. That incredibly great, satisfying feeling of a win has eluded me in the past few years so much so that I've actually forgotten what it's like. Then today, in the second game of the Regional Small Fry tourney, my kid's team hit every bucket. They beat the other team by 20 points. The parents were dumbfounded. We've lost by as much as 30 points. We've seen halftime scores like 27 - 4. I'm still shocked. I'd like to think this feeling - the feeling of winning - will start coming back. Today with gymnastics, tonight in hockey, this fall with football. Starting to look for the upside of losing - at least we played ok in the second quarter or at least we only coughed up the ball twice or at least we didn't lose by 30, etc, etc - is no way to live a sports fan life. Here's to turning the corner.

Yes, please. Nice story, and this will now be my mantra until such time as we can say that the corner has been turned!

to your sons team. And hopefully the turning point was Turner punching us all in the face. Everything since then has been pretty good. Michigan and the Wings playing their best hockey. Gymnastics winning the B10. The Womens team is playing pretty well. And good reports coming from the football team.

Personally i don't get alot of joy out of winning .. I don't know why but the thrill of winning is nowhere near my agony of defeat for me .. when i win i feel like i did what i expected to do but when i lose i can't stop replaying what i should have done differently to win.

but something about this story doesn't add up. You said it was their second game of the tournament but they hadn't won all year, so I assume it was a double elimination and they lost the first game. But you also said it was the last game of the year? How do you win and not have another game?

All the teams in the league play two games the first day of the tournament regardless of their records going in. Our record was 0 - 16. We lost the first game today, and then won the second game. Whether we would play again tomorrow (the second day of the tourney) depends on how everyone else does. We played early in the day, and I haven't heard about a game tomorrow, so I think we're done. The league is called Small Fry. It's a national league set up for shorter kids - you can't be over 5 feet to play. It's for ages 9 - 12. My kid is 9 and on the tall side so he probably won't play more than one more year due to his height. I will say that this team of kids who lost every game came out and played hard and played to win every weekend. They were awesome. Some kids took it really hard, but no one ever gave up and no one quit. Good life lessons learned.

Reminds me of my soccer team in 4th grade. We didn't even score all year until the last game. Then we scored 5 goals that game and shut out the other team. I think that was really the start of me being a sports junkie!

I was at the Toledo Walleye game tonight. They won 5-1. It feels like you have to pee really, really bad. That might also have something to do with 64 oz of beer.
