OT-Tigers 8/7/2010

I'm glad nobody has been bothering with Tiger threads for the last few days.  I mean 10-1 Angels at the top of the ninth.  This season is officially over.  Sorry for the double cliche, but I'm not a chicken little type, but even a Pollyanna can tell that there is no coming back from this string of humiliations.  Let's just hope Dombrowski makes the right moves in the offseason, and that he doesn't turn out to be another Joe D whose moves all of a sudden turn to shit.

The money that is going to be freed up this year will be staggering.  Dontrelle's contract (approx. 12 million) and Robertson's contract (comes in at a ridiculous $10 million will be up, Magglios option triggers will most likely not be met ($15 million), Bondo's is up ($12.5 million), Guillen is up ($12 million), Damon is up ($8 million), Inge is up ($6 million),  and Lairs, Seay,  and Scherzer are up.  Porcello has a club option at  $1.5 million.  Generally, I would say shit, my club is in trouble.  But in the case of almost all of these guys, they are not giving much value for their money.  Dontrelle and Robertson don't merit discussion at this point.  Bondo is not worth $12.5 at this point, and Magglio is really not woth $15 million (but at least it could be cheaper than this years $18 million).  Likewise Guillen.  He seems to be in decline.  I'd re-sign Inge for a similar amount, and Damon is worth what he is getting.  Exercise Porcello's option, and we still have at least $60,000,000 coming off the books this year that we can play with.

Dombrowski's built a couple teams before he came to Detroit. It's just that ownership in the past forced him to tear everything apart shortly after finding success.

I don't think that you are a chicken little when you say that this season is over. I figured as much when Magglio popped his ankle. I still think a major move is coming this offseason, at either SS or 3B. I'm thinking about the magnitude of the Cabrera move a few years ago.

im also feeling a major move for the infield.  Maybe a trade for Hanley?  what with all the issues about his effort, he could be on the market for the right prospects, which we seem to have. DD could also sign a middle rotation starters and a nice bullpen piece and still have some cash left over.

I know I'm in the minority, but I'm not against a wholesale change of GM and Manager.

It's no coincidence that the Tigers became relevant at the same time the NHL instituted a hard salary cap. The NHL lockout was in 2004-2005. Low and behold the Tigers famously went after Ordonez that same year, signed Pudge, Guillen, and Polanco all within that time frame.

The Wings' budget went down. The Tigers suddenly got better.

This team is relevant because of Ilitch. Dombrowski & Leyland are expendable.
