OT: Thinking about an I phone
I am thinking of upgrading my cell phone and getting an Iphone. Everyone that I have talked to that has one loves it but nobody that I know has had one for long. I am concerned about the longevity of it. Is there anyone out there on this board that has had one for a while that could give me some insight. any problems that you have had? things to look out for? thanx
let that idea exit your mind, the sooner the better for your bank account's sake

I have had my 3g iPhone since the day it came out last July. I have owned several models of palm phones and blackberrys neither hold a candle to the iPhone. With 25000 apps to download the device will be what you want it to be. And in June the 3.0 upgrade comes out and solves some of the grips I do have with the phone (cut and paste, picture messaging). I am hard on phones and it has survived living in my pocket for almost a year without a problem.
I agree. I own an Iphone and I have had it for as long as super J, and i honestly couldn't be happier with it. Fo real, you won't regret it my man.
Like Super J said, wait till after the WWDC the second week of June.
Possible new models will have better specs, lower prices, + software update etc.

without hesitation if you can deal with a couple of trade-offs compared to other phones. But by and large the interface and the thousands of apps make it a great phone. I've had mine,a 3G, for about a year, and no regrets.
Negatives:
No tactile keypad. If you do a lot of typing texts or email on the go, and you have clumsy fingers, make sure you try the phone before you buy it. It works fine for me, but some complain.
For some reason there is a delay in receipt of voice mail on my phone -- may be service carrier or phone. There are times when I know someone calls, and I don't get the voicemail until 10 minutes later.
Sound quality on the phone. Not as good as some others. I don't have a problem with it, I can hear the other end and they can hear me. You probably wouldn't be interested in this phone if it were only for telephone conversations, and the rest of the phone attributes outweighs whatever minor inconvenience this is.
Lock Ups. It can "lock up" once in a while, which I have found can be resolved by powering down, or in worst case scenario synching with your itunes. The first time it happened I was livid - since figuring out it's really not a big deal b/c it rarely happens (seems to happen only if there are a lot of emails not attended to, and even in that state, only rarely.
Positives:
There are too many too list, this is a phenomenal device. If you use an ipod now, you'll love this phone for music. Clock and alarm settings are very usable if you're without an alarm clock on the road. Email is easy and reliable if you can dig the keyboard. Calendaring effective and easy.
Video is awesome.
Surfing web is easy and the interface for this teriffic -- if you don't have 3G service its still useable.
Unless one of the negatives above is a deal killer for you, you'll love the phone.
For the Palm Pre to come out and compare. Not saying the Palm is better but it's something you should check out first before getting locked into an expensive phone/contract from Apple/ATT.
As mentioned, the World Wide Developers Conference is in June and the next generation phone will be announced. The new phone iwll have video, faster internet, better camera, and more memory. If you don't want all that then the current 3G phone will just get cheaper.
happier with it. Durability has been good, have a couple of gripes that were listed above, but even though mine's not 3g the apps and updates make it still worthwhile. I'd recommend without hesitation but wait until june as pointed out here.
I'm planning on getting one.
I was able to use one for a week during last semester (thanks EECS) and that week coincided with the Basketball team's NCAA appearance.
I had it with me down in Kansas City and it was almost invaluable. The texting was fine, once I got used to the keyboard. I actually really ended up liking the keyboard. The Maps App saved us a bunch of times, and it was nice being able to stay on top of emails and my calender during the hectic time of figuring out how we would stay in KC another two days.
I like mine; in fact, I love it.
However, do yourself a favor and never become the douchebag that sits down with his bag in a coffee shop, pulls out his books, and then pretentiously sits his iPhone face up for all to see. It's pathetic--and increasingly becoming pathetically cliche, at that.
Moving on, it is a great tool. And there are plenty of unique applications that can bring ease to any industry (science and medicine, for me--which is impressive [in my mind, at least] for any device that can also play Super Monkey ball).
Further, I am saying this all despite the fact that, a few months ago, I dropped mine onto concrete while fumbling about in front of an ATM. The phone cracked immediately (the front touch screen is tightly compacted into its frame, and it readily shatters--yet remains within the frame--when confronted with impulsive strain. Anyway, I still use the phone. Heck, now, I wouldn't have it any other way (it shatters evens, and in-plane, so my finger doesn't shred as it slides over the shards). Look up "character" muther whutter.
Cliche is a noun; the adjectival form is cliched.
Correct usage would be either "It's increasingly becoming a pathetic cliche," or "It's increasingly becoming pathetically cliched."
and get the 3.0 version. I have the 2.0 version and absolutely love it- I am now able to travel without my laptop (and my iPod, Palm, dictaphone, DVD player, etc.) and still do things like read mgoblog, etc.; The "keyboard" takes a little getting used to, but once you adjust to it there's no reason to go back. The AT&T contract is a slight bummer (a bit expensive) but they have pleasantly surprised me with their customer service- easily on a par with T-Mobile. Waiting for the Palm Pre is like holding off getting an iPod to check out the next Zune....
Yes AT&T is more expensive then sprint and t-mobile, but the rate plans mirror verizion. You will be in a two year contract with a data plan, but the data plan is how AT&T make back the cost of the phone. You might only pay $199 but the pay apple $575 for the same phone.
Remember you get what you pay for... T-mobile might be cheaper but they piggy back off of AT&T network when they don't have coverage. And AT&T has the roll over feature which has saved my ass more then a few times when I went over my minutes.
It'd be a great phone if the "Shake the Baby" app were still available.

thanx to all. I will wait until June if I can. I just today went to charge my current phone (sony slider) and the charger is not making contact so it is now taking a rubber band to get it to take a charge. You guys have made up my mind for me and I thank you for it.
and my wife has an iPhone, and I am immensely jealous, so get one.
In terms of longevity, she has had it for 5+ months and all is well. She has even dropped it 2-3 times and nothing has happened to it.
i don't know if you planned on getting some apps if/when you get this iphone, but i have an iPod Touch and they have recently released Tiger Woods PGA Tour, and EA has also announced Madden 10', NBA Live, and 'The Sims 3', among other EA titles, as future App Store games.
