OT- Stanford wins on last second field goal

Everyone likes to post when Jimmy H. and Stanford loses so i thought I'd post when they won.

Nothing shocking, they were favored to win but Jimmy H goes to 5-1 on the year with Wash. State coming up and a great chance to go 6-1.

Here's to hoping he finishes strong.  Love to see the M Alums do well.

and a missed EP that looked to doom them with a minute left.  i know its petty to say this after a crushing lost, but as my OSU friend said, "please dont ever get Harbaugh"

Hes a good coach

no doubt.  But the grass is always greener.  When RR came here people were saying the same thing, and it hasn't worked out perfectly to this point.  Maybe things will turn around, maybe they won't.  The point is there is never a sure thing with a coaching hire.

Storming the field is the opposite of rubbing it in.  It's saying that you respect your opponent so much that beating them is an exciting occurrence.  It's a damn Lane Kiffin-coached team under NCAA sanctions... Stanford is still kinda new to the "being a good team" deal.

That being said, USC and Lane Kiffin can both kiss my ass; this is just the wrong way to express that.

When I brought this up on another forum someone said PAC 10 teams do that all the time...Oregon beat Stanford, Oregon was the higher-ranked team, and the fans were still out on the field.

Hey los barcos, he's 5-1, so

Hey los barcos, he's 5-1, so shouldn't you be talking about how the program will never succeed with him at the helm?  That's the standard to you from your other posts, right?

I respect your right to root for the coach (and thus the program) to fail and likely go through another disastrous 3-year transition, as long as you respect mine to hope you and the rest of the MLive mouthbreathers find a new place to be complete f'ing morons.

Mediocrity

You are praising a coach who is now one game over .500 in his fourth year on the job after needing a last second field goal at home to beat a team with 70 scholarship players that just lost to an awful Washington team.  How is our 5-1 record so much worse than theirs?

I would tell you to go fuck yourself but I don't want you to experience the joy of possibly being successful at it.

While I understand

your insecurity and need to pump up RR in the face of people that want him fired, if you actually think this Michigan team is as good as Stanford this year you're delusional.  Harbaugh has done a better job than RR to this point.  Granted, it is at a different school and its like comparing apples to oranges (yet you try).  Also, he has had an extra year.

There is a group of posters on this board that are so "support Rich Rod or die" that they can't actually recognize another coach doing a pretty good job, just b/c some people believe him to be RR's successor.  If I guaranteed that Harbaugh would not be a coach at Michigan, would you acknowledge hes done a pretty good job?

To this point?

Harbaugh is in his fourth year at Stanford.  Rodriguez is in his third at Michigan (and he didn't inherit a Heisman Trophy caliber running back).  In his third year at Stanford, Harbaugh went 8-5 (a record I think we have a great shot at matching or bettering this year).  In his fourth year, Harbaugh has the exact same record we do, got smoked by the one good team he played, and yet Los Barcos and others act like he is Vince Lombardi and Rodriguez is crap.

Obviously Harbaugh is a solid coach.  At the same time, he doesn't have a tenth of the track record Rodriguez has as a head coach (building a team that won 2 BCS Bowls at a school that had never won a major bowl game in over 100 years of football).  I'm sorry that pointing out Harbaugh's actual record is frustrating to some people, but on the whole he has done a "just okay" job at Stanford and has had a lot of the same struggles Rodriguez has had here at Michigan (crappy defense, back to back losses to Cal, losing to an awful Wake Forest team last year).  It is when people gloss over those struggles while criticizing the guy we have for not being perfect that others rise to the defense of the fantastic coach we have.

Gerhardt excuse

for Harbaugh being successful is overplayed.  This year is the best team hes had and Gerhardt isn't on it.  RR also inherited a first round Dlinemen.  Also, I said above that hes had 1 more year, and I said you can't really compare coaches so why try.  I just don't see a reason to engage the Harbaugh lovers.  Fine, rip apart Harbaugh and make a case that RR is a better coach, the RR haters will just find a new love affair.

PurpleStuff isn't comparing

PurpleStuff isn't comparing the coaches, los barcos is.  If we're "recogniz[ing] another coach doing a pretty good job," where's the Les Miles thread?  He's undefeated, that crazy bastard.  Where's the Spurrier thread?  He just beat the #1 team in the nation, not a 70 scholarship team that just lost to WASHINGTON.  Or is it possible that a ridiculously high percentage of the fanbase has a hard-on for a guy who has been somewhat more successful than average at Stanford?

RichRod looked better coming in than Harbaugh does right now.  Coaching changes involve great uncertainty.  Why not give a guy who came in with next to nothing thanks to the failures of the previous staff* a chance to see if 5-1 turns into something other than 5-7 before we start talking about Harbaugh AGAIN.

*RR has also made his own mistakes, I like Carr, etc., etc.

it's funny

I have nothing against Les or Harbaugh. They are good coaches. However, for all the RR haters out there, if Les or Harbaugh had this team and this defense at 5-1...Something tells me they would be being praised. Something like "Wow, Les or Harbaugh is 5-1 with such a bad defense! That must make them great coaches and so much better than RR"

I agree

I essentially made that exact same point above.  My point of the post that is getting negged, is .500 at Stanford after inheriting a 1 win team 3+ years ago is pretty good.  Purple is trying to highlight any negative he can get his hands on b/c some other people want Harbaugh to be the next coach (come on ripping on him b/c they BEAT USC, thats weak no matter how it happened).  Don't stoop to their level.  You sound desperate.  Be confident in the coach you have, acknowledge a guy doing a good job at another school and move on.

Ripping on Harbaugh for beating USC by a FG isn't going to make RR any more successful, or make the haters like him any more.

I can assure you

No one is more confident in the continued improvement/success of our program under Rodriguez than I am.

I don't think pointing out that what Harbaugh has actually done at Stanford (his only Division 1 coaching job ever) is no more impressive than guys like Ty Willingham and Dennis Green (none of whom we would want) is desperate.  It is just a realistic response to the overwhelming positive perception he has (both here and in the larger media, as evidenced by Mike Patrick last night attributing Stanford trying to run the ball in from the one yard line solely to Harbaugh's toughness, when just about any coach in America would have done the exact same thing).

Like I said earlier, Harbaugh is a solid coach.  He is not the one who sucks (that is Los Barcos).  But using adjectives like "great" or "amazing" like I've seen on here to describe his tenure at Stanford can't be based on anything that has happened so far, but rather is the product of faith in future improvement/success.

I didn't bring up Harbaugh, but when those that do assume his team will continue to improve (based, I guess, on his success at USD or just because they like his "gritty" tobacco chewing ways) at the same time they assume our team with the exact same record will fail (despite our coaches very impressive history of, you know, actual success at the national level), then their thinking deserves to be questioned by a quick presentation of the facts.  I didn't rip Harbaugh for beating USC.  At the same time, however, I don't see it as a particularly praiseworthy event, and neither does anyone else who knows college football.

You kind of did

after needing a last second field goal at home to beat a team with 70 scholarship players that just lost to an awful Washington team.

I guess I found that comment to be a rather negative interpretation of Stanford beating USC. One could consider that ripping on them for winning.

Sorry

The point I was trying to make was more "this isn't that big a deal and certainly not worthy of a post praising the coach" than "they really aren't that good and Harbaugh sucks LOL."

If it sounded like something else I can only attribute it to my hatred of Los Barcos getting the best of me.

Wait, we're you of the mind that

USC wasn't going to be crippled? Maybe I'm remembering wrong.  But beating mediocre big rivals and going over .500 sounds pretty good about now....

And no, I don't want that two faced drunk Harbaugh as our coach. Ever.

LSU

Hey let's all bash on Les Miles and that God awful 6-0 LSU team he has after they just beat Florida in the swamp. Yes, I'm being sarcastic.

Or let's discredit Mark Richt's win over a lowly Tennessee team b/c Mark Richt is such a terrible coach.

People act as if  Rich Rod came from coaching some high school football team.

USC's defense is just as bad as Michigan's

USC scores in the last 2 minutes and then Stanford just slices through that D and hits the game winning FG
