OT: Speaking of Mike Tyson...JUCO pitcher takes down base runner

Earlier this week, a pitcher from Weatherford College tackled a baserunner after he hit a homerun. The pitcher was suspended four games and the batter two. My son played with a kid his first year in college who is currently on a JUCO team in OK, in the same league. He said he was surprised someone didn't take down this particular batter sooner, the guy's an instigator. The ump confirmed it. JUCO baseball is a different animal, a wild west type of league and I guess it can get a little crazy but this crosses a line. My son said if anyone on his team had done that, they would've been unequivocally kicked off the team.

Hell of a tackle.  I can only imagine what kind of behavior you have to get up to where you can essentially be assaulted during a game and the official response is "yeah, here's your suspension".

Thanks for that info. I saw this video a couple of days ago, but was on my phone so I couldn't really make out too much detail. Just from watching it I couldn't see anything the batter did to instigate, so it looked like an unprovoked attack. When I saw you posted that the batter received a 2-game suspension I wondered what the heck for - but your explanation helps clear up my confusion.

I also went back and watched it again on a larger monitor and could clearly see the batter turn his head toward the pitcher, followed immediately by the field umpire pointing at the batter. Quite obvious something less than pleasant was said.

I’m sorry, but those punishments are way out of proportion. One dude talking trash, the other physically assaulting in a manner that could get you a prison sentence. If the base runner suffered serious injuries from that hit the pitcher would literally be in jail right now.

I believe those were just from the conference or league. Batter got 2 because I believe he was in the process of being ejected while running around the bases (umpire points directly at him as he's between 2nd and 3rd).

I got an ESPN alert last night that the pitcher had been kicked off his team. Which feels like a more correct punishment for the incident.

The fallout is actually even worse for the batter's team; every player and coach who stepped on the field got a 2 game ban. So pretty much the whole team is out and will have to forfeit the next 2 games against...the pitchers team! Pitcher is gone but team get 2 wins for an attack, come on man!

Baseball fights are typically lame, but that guy got decked!

The comments are awesome:

Texas baseball announcer: "Oh no! ...That was out of nowhere!"

Minnesota hockey announcer: "IT WAS A CLEAN HIT (x16)"

I'd have told the guy running the bases to STFU if I was in the on-deck circle when I was playing. Running your mouth to the pitcher meant an excellent chance of a fastball coming right at whoever batted next.

YOU may not like it, but objectively, it is extremely far from the dumbest shit in sports.

Ever seen a college football game last over 4.5 hours because of ads and replays? Or the NFL reviewing every single play from every angle 300 times to the point it has completely changed the experience of watching an NFL game is on TV? Or the insane number of uncalled travelling/carrying calls each and every game in the NBA? I mean, isn't the point of basketball to bounce it to move with it? But no, we'll just take complete liberty with arguably the second most important part of the game besides scoring. I mean, the pure BS of how fouls are called in basketball is utterly ridiculous. Half the time, it isn't even a foul, the ref just anticipates a foul, and calls it regardless if anyone even got touched.

I mean, have you ever seen badminton, underwater hockey, shin-kicking, or toe wrestling? Hell, the 2018 OSU game on it's own was 10 times dumber than every instance of baseball's unwritten rules being followed or used since the invention of baseball combined.

There's a billion dumber things in sports than a 130+ year old tradition of self government that was put in place to keep a baseball game from turning into a complete brawl back in the 1800s - early 1900s

Here, let me try that again:

Baseball's unwritten rules are some of the dumbest shit in sports.

Better?

I don't disagree with your many good examples. I also don't think the apparent rule of escalation in baseball (Feel hurt? Just aim at the guy's head next time. That'll show him.) would promote peace.

Get out of the way.  It is pretty hard to hit someone in the head.  Much easier to drill someone in the ribs or thigh.  I've played a couple thousand baseball games in my life and have never been hit in the head.  I've been drilled in the ribs, back, and thighs probably around 100 times.  Also, it really doesn't hurt that much to get hit until after the game.

What a hit.

Neither team really dove right on this. Teams I’ve been on would be going at for awhile after a hit like that.

It’s almost as if each team felt justice was served.
