OT: SpaceX Starship Flight Test - Thursday Window
SpaceX rescheduled the Starship flight test to this morning. The 62 minute launch window is from 9:28 AM ET to 10:30. Their YouTube livestream has started.
Mars bitches, Mars.
Let's Go.
Go Blue!
Given how prescient Paul Verhoeven's films have turned out to be, I'm not so sure that's a great idea.
On the other hand, rockets are pretty sweet and it would be a sin to let them go to waste, so... LFG!

I mean, I know nothing more than what Wikipedia just told me about this guy but.... Prescient about what?
April 20th, 2023 at 10:34 AM ^
It’s a joke. He’s referring to the critically acclaimed movie by Paul VerHoevan, Total Recall, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger which involves him trying to free the people on Mars.
April 20th, 2023 at 11:42 AM ^
And release the water being held underground… because there is water on mars (/s).
I walked out of the movie theater to see a weird yellow sky, just like the one in the movie. It was freaky!
April 20th, 2023 at 11:57 AM ^
Oh, I totally understood the allusion to Total Recall, but the front end of "prescience" was nonsense to me. Still is.
I'll just chalk this up as one of those jokes I won't ever get and laugh along uncomfortably.
Given how closely the business, social, and political trends predicted in his two other biggest hits, Robocop and Starship Troopers, have shown themselves to be, the joke is alluding to Total Recall being similarly accurate if and when we finally populate Mars
His titular hit, Showgirls, should be involved here as well.

“Titular”?
ISWYDT
And Basic Instinct for that matter
It's self driving? Look out below.
Don't worry. It's programmed to take out as many bystanders as possible in an effort to save itself.
*"black bystanders." Elon has very specific performance requirements.
oh my

Apparently anyone with a conservative viewpoint is a racist? ...noted
April 20th, 2023 at 10:51 AM ^
Wait. Is Elon conservative now? Is this new because I always thought he was super liberal, and all the hate he gets these days is because hes a billionaire.
April 20th, 2023 at 10:57 AM ^
Well, I thought he was pretty neutral, but since he took over Twitter it seems the more liberal people hate him more. So, that makes me think people think he leans conservative? :) Who knows really. I could not care less about people's personal views. They are always entitled to their opinion. I just think Elon's companies (not counting Twitter... kind of glad he's tanking that cesspool) push the envelope of innovation and move us forward technologically. Personal views of him aside. Just thought accusing him of racism was an interesting take.
April 20th, 2023 at 11:08 AM ^
You thought Elon was super liberal? Interesting.
Yea. I mean he had all his success coming out of the the Bay area in the tech space, which is a very liberal area. He infused new life into the electric car movement to help mitigate the risks of climate change, which is also a very liberal area. I could go on, but I guess I don't care either way. I've never judged someone's character on who they vote for.
April 20th, 2023 at 11:09 AM ^
I'm not sure what Elon is politically. I think he's just a narcissist. He arguably is one of the coolest people ever in founding Pay Pal, SpaceX, Tesla, [the solar roof company], the Boring company and OpenAI. It's hard to say exactly what he founded and what he didn't since he has a history of buying the founding title in pre-existing companies. He was actually hilarious on SNL and was on his way to being the new Steve Jobs/Bill Gates (billionaire who everyone worships as a genius), but I think the anti-nepo/ anti-billionaire thing has worked against him. I think he's recently taken up the conservative mantle, or at least ultra-conservative rabble-rousing (own the libs) because those poeple are crazy and will give him the "love" that he is looking for as a narcissist. I think he was previously looking for the same "love" from the left with all of the green energy stuff, but it's hard to be a well-liked as a billionaire on the left. (Those people are crazy as well.)
I have a friend that works for Tesla and it is my understanding that they all think he is a crazy person.
April 20th, 2023 at 11:45 AM ^
+1 for the above
I’m thinking he’s taken a counter position on most topics to differentiate himself. Which leads to the narcissist aspect you mention above.
April 20th, 2023 at 12:19 PM ^
I dislike him because he's an egotistical attention whore, and I dislike those qualities in anyone who has them. They're usually unprincipled people whose views sway towards whatever benefits them in the moment. For me it's not a political thing at all. Just a personal preference.
Not everyone, certainly. But most, yeah...
I want nothing associated with that person to succeed.
I'm no fan of Elon but this is the type of thing people like him (innovative risk takers) are good for, running social media sites...not so much.
Yes Twitter was known for being such a pleasant website before he bought it.
April 20th, 2023 at 10:02 AM ^
Yea. No shit!
and if Elon totally torpedoes Twitter, intentional or not, isn’t that a good thing?
April 20th, 2023 at 10:12 AM ^
Umm no? All news is broken on twitter if you haven't noticed. Elon removing verification process for news breakers is bad.
April 20th, 2023 at 10:27 AM ^
No I haven’t noticed because I’m not on Twitter thankfully. And yet, I still get breaking news through other avenues.
Twitter is first for news. You can get it through other media but if you look at when it's posted on Twitter and other places, Twitter is first by a considerable amount of time. Also Twitter posts are often the point of reference for breaking news.

aLl NeWs Is BrOkEn On TwItTeR
gtfoh
i have never had twitter and have never had a hard time being up to date
maybe YOU choose to get your news from there, but millions get the news just fine without it.
April 20th, 2023 at 11:28 AM ^
Weird how you hate twitter then post on here just like some of the dipshits on twitter. Neat use of caps. Never said you can't get news but it hits twitter first. Feel free to keep refreshing CNN or whatever you prefer so you don't have to see shit like this: aLl NeWs Is BrOkEn On TwItTeR
April 20th, 2023 at 11:43 AM ^
it’s weird I “hate” twitter but I post on a Michigan sports blog?
never said I hated it, and i’m not sure how those two are connected but you do you
you must not understand the meme of alternating capital letters. that’s ok. i can promise you it’s been around since … well, long before twitter
April 20th, 2023 at 11:56 AM ^
Oh I understand it because it's been all over twitter for years. It's just dumb.
April 20th, 2023 at 12:24 PM ^
I get it you’re a huge twitter guy. That’s cool, happy for you. I was just pointing out that if twitter failed to exist today, the world would go on just fine as far as news etc.
The idea of reusing rockets was a paradigm shift, and SpaceX made it happen.
They won’t be reusing this one.
April 20th, 2023 at 11:47 AM ^
I walked into the Delta lounge and the first thing I saw on the TV was the crash report. A lot of money is spent to figure out how to get it right, and his team will do it.
April 20th, 2023 at 10:37 AM ^
Landing the rockets upright is a good idea and the software/control to do it reliably is really a monumental accomplishment.
But in a world where we operated space shuttles for decades, I don't know how you can credit SpaceX for making reusable rockets happen. Certainly they've streamlined it, but it's not a new idea or a thing we've never done (mostly) successfully.
April 20th, 2023 at 10:51 AM ^
Shuttle != reusable rocket. We're talking reusing the stuff that launches the vehicle/payload that goes into space. OK, maybe reuse wasn't a new idea, but taking it seriously rather than dismissing it as "it can't be done" was new.
April 20th, 2023 at 12:06 PM ^
Which part of the shuttle do you think wasn't a "reusable rocket"? The main engines that were attached to the orbiter, went into space, landed with the orbiter and then were reused? Or the solid rocket boosters that were jettisoned on ascent, made to float, recovered from the ocean, and then reused?
Well, I was thinking of the shuttle as a different animal, as it was shaped and landed like a plane, had a large external fuel tank, and had remembered the SRBs as being disposed of.
The SRBs were reused. The external tank was not.
The Shuttle system took more than a year and a few $Billion dollars to refurbish between launches, which was definitely not the goal. Falcon 9 boosters take a few weeks (for whatever cost, nowhere close to 7 figures), and the Super Heavy is designed to fly 2-3 times each day.
The Shuttle was a great system, but it took too much $$$ to keep flying it.
Rooting against our species because you don't like a guy is totally rational.
I hate Musk and hope he goes bankrupt and we never have to hear from him again.
I also want SpaceX to succeed and for another company to develop a legitimate alternative so I can cheer for them.
I realize that these things are contradictory and dgaf. Best case is Musk sells SpaceX, which I know he would never do, he would sell everything else first to hold onto SpaceX.

Space X has more potential than tesla. Neat stuff.
