OT: Soccer Tuesday-Friday Open Thread

Submitted by itsbigcat on

Hey kinfolk,

It's a rather light week this week as the major European competitions take a break, but we get a much anticipated MLS return at the end. We're gonna keep this same thread for Tuesday through Friday this week, due to the fact that other than the La Liga clashes mid-week, there's really nothing else that warrants a whole day's worth of thread space.

What did you think of the Leicester game yesterday?  Whenever a manager/coach is removed partway through the season, it is interesting to see how the team responds.  I think they quit on Ranierei.

As much as I love soccer, the one thing that upsets me the most is the extremely short leash managers have.  One bad season and you are out.  Firing Ranieri this soon was a shock to me.  Yes they are playing horribly, but they are technically still alive in the UCl and are fighting for a spot to not get relegated.  Thankfully City has given their managers a little room to breath, especially Pelegrini, who lasted 3 years, when he could have easily been sacked after year 2.  But Guardiola is as safe as safe gets thankfully.  I'll be watching the Huddersfield game tomorrow, I hope they play with the same urgency they showed against Monaco.

The short leash is totally true, but at least in the bottom half of the table its an unavoidable concequence of relegation.  If Leicester can light a fire that's good enough for three extra points this season, that's probably worth a long term sacrifice because the severity of the concequences for a single  bad year are so high.  For teams in the top half of the table (that aren't called Arsenal) the shortness of the leash is, admitedly, absurd.

Good point, and you are right.  I was hoping Ranieri was an exception to that considering last season and the fact that they are still in it in regards to epl relegation avoidance and UCL.   I feel for Arsenal, Wenger is like 2007 Lloyd Carr, just needs to hang it up.  perpetully 4th, that is Arsenal's lot in life.

It seems Liverpool are vulnerable to a low possession, counter attacking team like Leicester who don't mind playing in their half of the field while they wait for a midfield turnover to pounce with Vardy. Compare that to Spurs' more forward alignment that Liverpool shredded a few weeks ago with its attacking speed.

I know people often shit on MLS but the league is stronger than ever and I'm interested to see what Atlanta and Minnesota can bring to the league as far as supporters/popularity goes

MLS is a fun league and that is enough for me. It is fun watching a fifth league come up and try to challenge the bigger American sports. Its fun being part of this weird little subculture of fans of American soccer. The leage has characters, and a focus on fan culture that is not unlike College Football. League quality is improving and most of the people who complain about league quality are more than happy to watch Fun Belt football on Tuesday nights.

I think Atlanta will probably make some noise and will be really sucessful off the field, but the on-field product is probably overhyped for now.

I root for Red Bull, so its going to be an interesting year. Hoping we can hand Atlanta a loss in their first ever match.

Last night the USA U-20s beat Mexico for the first time in 31 years in the 2nd stage of the CONCACAF Championship. Win or draw with El Salvador on Friday, we go to the U-20 World Cup. Win and we go to the Tournament finals (also possible with certain types of draws). Mexico and El Salvador play Wednesday, and if they split points (or SLV wins), we go through to the World Cup before Friday's match is even played. The U-20's looked shaky early in the tournament, losing to hosts Panama, but have really fought since then and look like they're a threat to win the thing.

All games on Facebook Live, search CONCACAF, stream quality is pretty good!

I've been checking these threads and appreciate the update.  I've also noticed there are some fellow Tottenham fans on the blog which I very much approve of. COYS all day. Audere est Facere. The game is about glory

If anyone on here is a very good FIFA17 player on PS4 let me know.  I'm always down for $ games and we are also looking for about 4-5 more players to fill out an Amateur Elite league of 20 players from the USA and Europe
