OT: Soccer Tuesday-Friday Open Thread

It's a rather light week this week as the major European competitions take a break, but we get a much anticipated MLS return at the end. These posts/updates... thanks

You got it, buddy.

What did you think of the Leicester game yesterday? Whenever a manager/coach is removed partway through the season, it is interesting to see how the team responds. I think they quit on Ranierei.
February 28th, 2017 at 9:42 AM ^
I think if they get some young competent defenders this summer, they can still be potent next year. Assuming they stay up this year.
February 28th, 2017 at 10:13 AM ^
As much as I love soccer, the one thing that upsets me the most is the extremely short leash managers have. One bad season and you are out. Firing Ranieri this soon was a shock to me. Yes they are playing horribly, but they are technically still alive in the UCl and are fighting for a spot to not get relegated. Thankfully City has given their managers a little room to breath, especially Pelegrini, who lasted 3 years, when he could have easily been sacked after year 2. But Guardiola is as safe as safe gets thankfully. I'll be watching the Huddersfield game tomorrow, I hope they play with the same urgency they showed against Monaco.
February 28th, 2017 at 11:40 AM ^
The short leash is totally true, but at least in the bottom half of the table its an unavoidable concequence of relegation. If Leicester can light a fire that's good enough for three extra points this season, that's probably worth a long term sacrifice because the severity of the concequences for a single bad year are so high. For teams in the top half of the table (that aren't called Arsenal) the shortness of the leash is, admitedly, absurd.
February 28th, 2017 at 12:03 PM ^
Good point, and you are right. I was hoping Ranieri was an exception to that considering last season and the fact that they are still in it in regards to epl relegation avoidance and UCL. I feel for Arsenal, Wenger is like 2007 Lloyd Carr, just needs to hang it up. perpetully 4th, that is Arsenal's lot in life.
February 28th, 2017 at 12:23 PM ^
cuz Arsene keeps clockin those Champions League dollars for them.
They paid off their new stadium in what . . . 6 years? Arsenal has so much $ they could easily afford to be the most expensive team.
February 28th, 2017 at 10:01 AM ^
Liverpool at home was the perfect first match for the new manager - Liverpool's a mess, and LCFC do have some remaining pride, it seems.
February 28th, 2017 at 10:03 AM ^
Has a top-flight team (in any major league) ever won the title one year and then got relegated the next?
February 28th, 2017 at 10:15 AM ^
Fortunately I wasn't alive, but City were the only team to be relegated after winning the league in 1937-38. That is probably the most typical City thing to have happenned.
February 28th, 2017 at 10:26 AM ^
I would say it sounds more Spursy but that would involve them actually winning a title, and...well, lol.
February 28th, 2017 at 10:38 AM ^
Lol, yeah I think I love City because they remind me of Michigan. Every game is heart attack enducing, the officials rarely give us breaks, they never give up even when down late, and they usually end each season with some heartbreak.
February 28th, 2017 at 10:56 AM ^
Lol...and spurs = sparty
February 28th, 2017 at 11:08 AM ^
I don't want to put that shame on Spurs. Spurs are a very hard team to hate. I like a lot of your players and manager. Even though I am not a fan of Man U or their obnoxious manager Maureen, I don't even hate them to the level of a Sparty or OSU.
February 28th, 2017 at 2:37 PM ^
Oh I didn't mean the same level of hate. Nothing can compare to the level of obsession I have for M Football.
But sp*rs are pathetic. They're the easiest team to hate too..everyone does!
(Obviously I'm not a spurs fan)
February 28th, 2017 at 10:15 AM ^
Liverpool doing whatever it can to avoid Champions League football. Again.
February 28th, 2017 at 10:26 AM ^
It seems Liverpool are vulnerable to a low possession, counter attacking team like Leicester who don't mind playing in their half of the field while they wait for a midfield turnover to pounce with Vardy. Compare that to Spurs' more forward alignment that Liverpool shredded a few weeks ago with its attacking speed.
February 28th, 2017 at 10:39 AM ^
Set piece defense is a shit show. They're not coordinanting or finishing attacks. I have a feeling Arsenal will be a better match - strange as that sounds. Otherwise it's on to thinking about summer transfers.
February 28th, 2017 at 12:19 PM ^
is a bad defender and should feel bad. 1st Vardy goal was on him.
They have a couple gys they play regularly who shouldn't see the field. And I'm not even a Pool fan so I don't pay much attention, it's just glaringly obvious.

No downvote yet! What time is it in Sydney?
February 28th, 2017 at 10:28 AM ^
I know people often shit on MLS but the league is stronger than ever and I'm interested to see what Atlanta and Minnesota can bring to the league as far as supporters/popularity goes
February 28th, 2017 at 11:16 AM ^
MLS is a fun league and that is enough for me. It is fun watching a fifth league come up and try to challenge the bigger American sports. Its fun being part of this weird little subculture of fans of American soccer. The leage has characters, and a focus on fan culture that is not unlike College Football. League quality is improving and most of the people who complain about league quality are more than happy to watch Fun Belt football on Tuesday nights.
I think Atlanta will probably make some noise and will be really sucessful off the field, but the on-field product is probably overhyped for now.
I root for Red Bull, so its going to be an interesting year. Hoping we can hand Atlanta a loss in their first ever match.

Go USA!
February 28th, 2017 at 10:59 AM ^
Last night the USA U-20s beat Mexico for the first time in 31 years in the 2nd stage of the CONCACAF Championship. Win or draw with El Salvador on Friday, we go to the U-20 World Cup. Win and we go to the Tournament finals (also possible with certain types of draws). Mexico and El Salvador play Wednesday, and if they split points (or SLV wins), we go through to the World Cup before Friday's match is even played. The U-20's looked shaky early in the tournament, losing to hosts Panama, but have really fought since then and look like they're a threat to win the thing.
All games on Facebook Live, search CONCACAF, stream quality is pretty good!
February 28th, 2017 at 11:04 AM ^
I wish you could watch them on demand
February 28th, 2017 at 11:59 AM ^
I've been checking these threads and appreciate the update. I've also noticed there are some fellow Tottenham fans on the blog which I very much approve of. COYS all day. Audere est Facere. The game is about glory
If anyone on here is a very good FIFA17 player on PS4 let me know. I'm always down for $ games and we are also looking for about 4-5 more players to fill out an Amateur Elite league of 20 players from the USA and Europe
February 28th, 2017 at 12:16 PM ^
I have a pro club online with my Stepbro and cousin in Mexico. We are decent, nothing great, but I would be down to at least give that a shot.
February 28th, 2017 at 2:41 PM ^
The league will be Online standard teams. Likely 4.5 start or 4 star league since there are only 17 5 star clubs.

Terriers. Beat City
February 28th, 2017 at 12:53 PM ^
City all day every day!!! With no fixtures last weekend, I expect a full 1st team squad instead of a 2nd team squad we had last weekend. 3-1 prediction.
February 28th, 2017 at 2:29 PM ^
USMNT u20 beat Mexico yesterday and have a great chance of advancing to the World Cup

Came across this nice article about a soccer player who may have helped save another player's life. Oh, and by the way, he's done it 3 other times too.
http://www.sbnation.com/lookit/2017/2/27/14755812/soccer-player-francis-kone-save-life-competitor
Generally we hear about the bad things athletes do. I thought this was a nice story.
Huddersfield goes up 1-0 over City in their FA Cup replay - 7'
City ties it up 30'
And PK for City puts them in lead 2-1, 35'
3-1 sheesh 38' - beatdown in progress
Hell yeah. Barca win, Real draw. The boys take over first in la LIGA, a game ahead, but with an epic el Classico on the horizon
