OT: Saturday night tell me what to drink drinking thread

Like Justice Kavanaugh, I like beer. I am familiar with the options.

And though I am not exactly an oenophile, I know what wines I like.

But now I am an old man and it’s time to expand to the hard stuff. What should be my drink of choice? Suggested brands would also be helpful, especially if it’s not top-shelf stuff that will bankrupt me.

Preferably no mixed drinks, either. Keep it simple.

And on that note, what are you drinking?

Evan Williams Bottled in Bond (the white label) is surprisingly pleasing for what most would consider a very pedestrian brand.

No one is going to confuse it with top shelf stuff, but if you're just getting into bourbons and don't want to break the bank, it doesn't suck.

Irish whiskey tends to be relatively innocuous since it's triple distilled. So I'd recommend something like Jameson Caskmates which is Irish whiskey aged in beer barrels. You can pick between stout, IPA, etc.  If you are big into beer, that may be a good segway.

If you like wines, a nice wine finished rye may have some fruit and spice that you'd enjoy.  It's worth trying both.  My favorite is whistlepig old world, but it's a little pricey for a rye. There are plenty of ryes distilled by mgp in Indiana that get barreled by smaller distilleries in all kinds of different used wine casks. So feel free to look around the liquor store for one. You can typically spot an mgp rye because the label will have to say distilled in Indiana.

Good luck, it's a wonderful world you're about to explore.
