OT: Santonio Holmes "I'm proud of him" re: TP

Submitted by iawolve on

Sorry if you are tired of the subject. I just find it fascinating how your head can never be too far in the sand, a money quote from Santonio Holmes regarding TP:

"I'm proud of him," said Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes, a former Ohio State star who was wearing a red Buckeyes cap Thursday. "I thought he did a great job while he was there. The things that he had to overcome thus far can be pushed behind and hopefully he can start a better career here in the NFL."

That is some pride, I am sure many others in the Buckeye Nation are proud they just lost their coach over this. I especially like "the things he had to overcome" such as being a coddled superstar that was allowed to break the rules for his three years at college and subsequently sink his alma mater? Maybe it was the overcoming the hassle of having to trade out cars? Maybe it was overcoming the few month wait to get into the supplemental draft? I see a movie on Lifetime detailing his difficult life.

And as I recall, former players came out and said they too had been getting the benefits deal back in 2001/2002.  This went on for months and months until the school apparently told them to shut the hell up.

Buckeye logic has always been fascinating.  Yes, we broke the rules.  But the rules are dumb so we shouldn't be punished.  Yeah, he received illegal benefits but I did too when I was on the team, so I'm proud of him.

Holmes also went on to say, "TP impresses me. Last year, I was only suspended for the first four games of the regular season. He hasn't even been drafted yet, and he's beaten me. That's tough to do."

What's he supposed to say? Holmes was probably asked off the cuff what he thought of Pryor, and there's a chance they might be working together as soon as next week so he said something positive.

Since I cannot start a separate thread, let me share some tangentially related news.

Recently, OSU boosters were spreading rumors that said that Ellis--the guy who talked to SI about TP and others--was not going to talk to the NCAA--that the "news" of his visit was just a prank played on the reporter, a Columbus guy named Torg.

I am suspicious of any news coming out of Columbus (eg playing a prank that discredits a reporter could have been a ploy to discredit Ellis).  However, I could find no basis for the claim that Ellis' talking to the NCAA was a prank at all.  The claim seems to be based on the fact that Torg removed his twitter messages about Ellis.   But here's what Torg had to say when asked a question.

TeddyHeisman Andrew Ellis

@myguythetorg Why did you delete your tweets about "Ellis" meeting with the NCAA?

@myguythetorg the torg

@TeddyHeisman tired of it buddy too many questions and negativity. I am staying out of it from here on out

So, Torg was given a chance to clarify that his messages were invalid but he did not.  Rather, he suggested that he is under political pressure to watch what he says.  That sounds to me a lot more plausible than anything else I've read.

While we still await any real news about recent developments in the NCAA investigation, it is important to remember this.  Any buckeye umor-mongering or the creation of false news to try to discredit someone reporting about Ellis would not discredit Ellis himself.

The name "Ellis" does refer to real person, who already incriminated TP and OSU in many ways.  Many of his statements have already been corroborated (eg Ellis' statement  that Pryor took whatever he wanted from the Athletic Department was also said by Pryor's teammate in an ESPN OTL interview).  In addition, the SI pulitzer prize winning author, George Dohrmann, who quoted Ellis has said that initial claims that the OSU investigation was done were false.  A producer even suggested that Dohrman is not with OSU either.

@georgedohrmann George Dohrmann

@ScriptOhio They weren't cleared. Their lawyer said something and everyone ran with that. NCAA still investigating.

@georgedohrmann George Dohrmann

@MoJoTheGreat Mistake if you listen to "reports" they were cleared. NCAA not done investigating.

Dohrmann said he was not done with OSU, according to the producer of the Dan Patrick show.

I have a problem with the term "superstar."  TP was a good player but hardley a superstar.  He was in, maybe, the top 20 in most stat catagories, but he has had hardley a truly dominant career.

Tebow, Luck, Newton, Bradford, McCoy - I would classify them as superstar QBs.

TP is not a leader and a disgrace to his team and program, so lets be careful with the terms we throw around on here.

Considering Santonio admitted to being a drug dealer in high school, fathered children in high school, allegedly punched a woman during a bar fight in Columbus, and has been arrested several times,  Pryor is a saint when compared.

It's a little known fact that TP's famous quote continued:

"...AND everybody deals drugs in high school, fathers children in high school, punches women in the face, gets arrested..."

I think this provides a lot of clarification, in retrospect.

That, and the fact they both went to OSU and are as a result, troglodytes.

Everyone in Ohio "knows" that nobody in Columbus did anything wrong and that they are all victims of the evil media, who are all out to get them out of jealousy.

Nobody does denial better than THE Ohio State University.

A quick skim of this thread (made possible by my son refusing to give up the mouse) allowed  me to see that TP was being investigated and that  TP was impressive and that TP was a good player, even quotable.  I must admit - I have never been as confused about toilet paper as I am right now.

Then again,  Pryor's statements are likely soft, strong and thoroughly absorbent.
